Really hate that 13&quot; 1600 x 900 screen - it is just too small after 15.4&quot; on HP, and I also have to run fonts on 150%. Still taking my time to hook it up as my main rig through dock and dual monitors. Mostly using it now through Remote Desktop when I need Win 7 &#x2F; Visual Studio 2013

Ask HN: What's the hardware (read: laptop) that has lasted you the most?

The hp pavilion isn't a good buy, very outdated and underpowered. The Lenovo is much better, more modern and more powerful, and importantly has a decent sized SSD rather than hard drive, this will make the computer much faster just on its own, and you can always add a hard drive for more storage for very cheap(not sure about US prices bit could get a good sized one for £60 in the UK).

 

My son will be graduating from High School in May 2021.  He is interested in going to college to learn video editing (He is familiar with Adobe Premiere Pro) like a course offered at Full Sail in Orlando Florida.  He also likes to live stream while he is playing on his PC, XBox, or Nintendo Switch.

His current system is a DELL [Inspiron 3252 Specifications](https://downloads.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_desktop/esuprt_inspiron_desktop/inspiron-3252-small-desktop_reference%20guide_en-us.pdf) but because it is old and he has used it for the activities mentioned above and his school work it lags a lot.

Buy or Build PC for son interested in video editing and live streaming?

Battery life will last you 8-10 hours which is amazing so you don't have to be near a socket every hour. Performance is amazing on this laptop. With its powerful processor, you will have no problem when web browsing, multi-tasking, and programming.

I only hit one real disappointment during my testing period, which was the speakers. The sound quality is not great, and the bass is particularly weak. There was some distortion that wasn’t a huge problem — I could only hear it if I was leaning close to the laptop — but also didn’t go away until the volume was below 50 percent. You can swap between audio presets in Bang & Olufsen’s audio control center for music, movies, and voice, but they didn’t make much of a difference

 The entire Ryzen 5000 line is fast.Having raved about the 1165G7-powered Spectre x360 14 not too long ago, I think the Aero was about on par with that machine in everyday use. It blew through my typical workload of around a dozen Chrome tabs with Slacking, Spotify streaming, and Zoom calls over top with no issues. But the battery life — AMD’s true strength — is the real standout here

  I'll probably forget to update this review down the line if my feelings change, but if it's anything like the last laptop I had, I'll probably bump it up a star or two based on longevity.

 The cool thing about it is that it charges very quickly.  Wifi works fine and it comes with a ethernet cord slot when you need it. Video quality is good and refresh rate is adequate.  Form Factor is strange as the GTX 1660ti pushes past the hinge of the screen, so you have the fans and video components jut out about an inch from where the base of the screen rests

Not a big deal, but definitely different than other laptops.  This thing runs pretty hot, and the speakers are on the underside of the machine, if that matters to you

Nice Entry-level Gaming Laptop with "meh" Battery Life and Annoying Lenovo Bloatware Installed

 The right USB does this less so I use that one. I haven't done any heavy gaming yet so I can't attest to its performance there yet, but so far the airflow during heavy usage seems good and the keyboard is very decent. Also, the webcam has a built-in manual slider to block/unblock it which was a cool bonus.

Great overall. Cons are battery(duh) and mine has mic jack static

He’s all set up with a desktop and loves it, and I want the portability of a laptop. I’m a software eng but new to pc gaming. I read all of your input and it seems the Lenovo legion 5 pro may be the way to go.

  I highly recommend this gaming laptop from Lenovo for all your gaming needs! Make sure to get the 144HZ display with 300+ nits of brightness and not the cheaper 120HZ one. The color accuracy on the 120hz display is absolutely terrible covering only 45% SRGB and is very washed out. This is my 3rd Legion 5 laptop. I got the 1st one from Walmart with the following specs: 4600H Ryzen 5, 120HZ 250 nits screen, 256 GB SSD + 1TB HDD, and only a GTX 1650ti. My 2nd was the same but a slightly cheaper price when it was on sale from Lenovo which featured the same screen, GTX 1650, and 512GB SSD + 1TB HDD . I decided to get this from Amazon since it has a GTX 1660ti and a better screen with 144hz and 300 nits brightness

This is definitely a much better bang for the buck and will be more future proof than the previous 2 laptops. The 1660ti is the 80-watt variation and is suitable for 1080p gaming on the go

This model did have a bug with the keyboard lighting that it refuses to turn on via the keyboard shortcut. This was recently fixed via a bios update from Lenovo
