2020 was a busy year for new bike releases and one of the things that we saw, the most of were new all-round road bikes, the lightweight kind that had been made more aero and one of the most hotly awaited of all those was the giant tcr advance. [ Applause, ], [, Music ], when giant lifted the covers off this bike. Many were somewhat surprised because, despite giant spending over three years designing the new bike, it still looked much like the previous generation, however, looks can be deceiving and the new tcr advance is indeed an overhaul on. The last giant have kept the lightweight and stiff formula that the tcr is known for, but added a dose of aerodynamics to it

 I think the integration is really neat as well like there's, no like uh noticeable, sensors or anything like that. It'S just really really neatly. Tucked away there. Yep and yeah, it looks great it's easy to charge

 Also that shaping specifically at the wide down tube was designed with two water bottles in mind. So aerodynamically. The bike is best when you're well, hydrated. Look to any of the new bike releases from many of the other brands and you'll see that they've probably tried to conceal the cables in some way at the front end of the bike to clean things up so maybe they've used a proprietary, handlebar and stem, or Maybe they're tucking the cables through the headset giant just kept things exactly the same as before with external cabling, and they claim it makes things easier to set up and service, and i completely agree, according to giant in the wind tunnel, the new tcr advance is within A blowing leaf of its competition, if you compare it to the cebello r5 disc or the specialized tarmac sl7 according to giant the tcr advance, is within half a watt of those bikes

 Uh i've seen we haven't tested it extensively ourselves, but i've seen some tests that sort of point to it to being one of the better shimano crank based power meters on the market. Sometimes the shimano crank based power meters have a bit of uh accuracy issues and from what i've seen from say, gp, llamas testing on youtube. Uh he's pointed to this this model actually being quite good. So that's all positive

2021 Giant TCR Advanced Pro 1 Disc review: Race-ready from the showroom floor

 So my old cannondale super six evo would max out a 25 millimeter wide tyre back in the days when a 23 was standard. Now the giant tcr comes stock with 25s, but would go up to a 32 millimeter tire. I mean that really is the stuff of endurance bikes and really shows how race bikes have evolved very roughly to offer wide tire clearance. So you can now modify your bikes, the better suit the rider you might be doing

 Now, given an aerodynamic makeover, so they sit in that same category and unfortunately, i haven't ridden a trek in monday yet or a specialized tarmac now. Trek won't send me a bike, because my channel was too small and specialized are sent me a bike coming soon, hopefully for a comparison, but i'm way down the list of priorities compared to bigger mainstream publications. So i've had to wait quite a while. So while i can't talk about performance and ride and handling, i can talk about weight and value for money, because here there are some interesting details to compare

 So it's a very responsive bike. When you climb, it feels very direct, there's, no sense the frame is flexing or twisting under even my admittedly migra power output, so the bike that climbs really well and if you like, climbing in the mountains or local small hills. This bike definitely excels in that area and then coming down the other side. This bike handles brilliantly

 So that's the downside to running a 32 on these rims. Is that light bulb effect, but going to 28 isn't as bad, but i found a 26 is probably the perfect sweet spot for these wheels that come on this bike. With all the tyres i've tested, i've used some tubeless, because these new slr 1 wheels are tubers ready using a new hookless b design, and these prelies, the goodyears and the mitchens are three brand new tuba tyres launch this year, which, in my experience, have offered exceptionally Good tubeless setup with no issues at all use a normal track pump. They go out first time no sealing issues, no issues at all, just the perfect demonstration of tuba technology, so a tyre upgrade if you're buying a bike is a top tip from me later at price and value for money and i'll, compare it to a track and Monda and a specialized tarmac for this, but first the price, this bike, i'm testing now costs three thousand seven hundred and ninety nine pounds, and i say now because, when launched back in march, it cost a 359 pounds, so 200 pound increase

 I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade.

5)  I’m pretty much still a beginner, and I was concerned about this too when I got my first real mountain bike. I also wasn’t too sure what kind of riding I wanted to do. I ended up with a Trek Marlin 5. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but once I got to riding some real trails and improving my skills, I got a better idea of what I wanted to upgrade

All your suggestions for bikes, things to look for or stay away from in a bike are welcome! Trying to make this a post that can be referenced off of for others too. 


1. How can I know what makes a bike valuable? Is there any easy way to guage how good a part/specs are of a bike? (Besides rhe frame material, thats a given)

2. Can you build bikes yourself like computers to be cheaper or is it a completely different story?

3. I know I don't understand wtf the differences between certain parts are, but what about bike lines? For example Trek Roscoe vs Martin ect. What makes all of the bike lines different, and how can I "know" what they are for? (I can assume the numbers mean how top of the line they are, but also is there a certain point that the best of one line wouldnt be worth it compared to another lines lower model?)

4. This one will be a no brainer for you guys, but because I am a noob I have to ask: How does a $500 hardtail compare to a $1000 hardtail? Sure the parts are better, but *what* makes them better?

5. Branching off of #4, what would be the price range for a beginner? From what I have heard I dont like the idea of a super cheap bike, but I dont know if I can take full advantage of something $1500+

6. Obligitory one: at the moment I like flowy, easy-to-go-fast-on trails/parks. I also think offroading in more technical trails is interesting, but I like the roller coaster feel of bike parks better. I have really thought about the Roscoe 7 but then saw the Stance 29 2 and still dont know which is better for my needs as they both are about the same price (lets ignore my point in #5). People say the Stance is good for beginners but is not meant to be "sent" with, can this be bad? I dont want to break a bike for going too crazy lol.


P.S. I think its also worth saying I have a bike, but its really old with spring suspension and rim brakes. So it was good for the time but I cant adjust the suspension down a lot since I am a lightweight. I have thought about upgrading it, but wanted to see my options of getting a modern bike.

New MTB lover here, I have questions that are asked not so often. (And some that are)

 and then you're gonna have these Bontrager XR Endurance Comp Grips which I really like because they've got a flat portion to them. Nice ergonomic shape to be able to keep your hands nice and comfortable. For breaks this is set up with Tech Rose HD em 276 and then for shifters. this bike is set up with Shimano Psaltis Em 315 7-speed shifter

6 seat post and this Bontrager Arvada saddle and then on the cockpit we're gonna have a 31.8 handlebar. A nice wide handlebar. It's gonna run an alloy 31

 This is also an upgrade over the 2020 model with having the M3 15 rather than the M3 10. So now that we've taken a look at some of the features and designs of this Trek Marlin 5 let's go ahead and find out what this bike weighs. The actual weight of a Trek Marlin 5 and a size medium comes in at 30 Oh Point one Eight pounds.  I could have purchased a much, much nicer full suspension for the money I have put down, though that's just my own experience and will not be like yours necessarily. If there's a Marlin 6 available go for it (since it has an air fork), otherwise I'd highly recommend a Vitus Nucleus.

I have a Marlin 5, do not buy one if you intend to ride seriously. I have basically replaced everything on mine except the frame and let me tell you. I could have purchased a much, much nicer full suspension for the money I have put down, though that's just my own experience and will not be like yours necessarily. I'll use it in country, on skate parks, bike parks etc. So i want to do some drops,  jumps etc. Like urban freeride videos. I'm looking for a cheap bike under 600$. I can upgrade it later. I was thinking about Trek marlin 5 but i figured out i cant do jumps on it. I saw B'twin rockrider st 520s, actually its looking good. So i wanted to ask you before making a mistake. Do you have any mtb suggestions? Do you suggest B'twin 520s?

I'm trying to decide my first mtb.

As the bike is still almost new, it has a "rattling" noise in the front wheel that probably requires some minor adjustments (hopefully at the store they'll be able to check and fix that).

I'm using my Marlin 5 every day for exercising, it makes my daily routine much easier and enjoyable. I have also used it to go biking on some trails, so much fun! 

A significant step up from my previous rides

 I got a M frame and it has the 8x2 gears. Also the hydraulic disc brakes are super efficient.
