 A knurled metal finish would have made a world of difference here. Appearance is of course completely subjective, but I feel like I need to share my experience with this particular machine. Looking at the photos online and when I first unboxed it, I wasn't a huge fan of the very classic boxy appearance. But each time I went into my kitchen and looked at it, it started to grow on me, especially I think thanks to this dark blue color that I purchased it in

 Both are made from a light and shiny plastic material that detracts from the otherwise premium feel of this machine. With that being said, the actuation of the steam knob feels robust, it's just the superficial feel I wasn't a huge fan of. A knurled metal finish would have made a world of difference here.  Here's what I mean by that. Once dialed in, the Gaggia Classic Pro was able to easily and consistently repeat the same shot time after time. A quick purge of the group resulted in consistent temperatures from shot to shot, and overall it was just a more commercial feeling experience than other machines I've tested in this price range. With that being said, it would be irresponsible of me to talk about the performance in this way without mentioning the caveat that the performance will be directly linked to the quality of the espresso grinder you choose to pair with it

I had a Saeco Poemia that lasted almost 7 years.

They are not built anymore, so I'm looking to buy another espresso machine that will last me a lifetime or at least like the Poemia.

What is an espresso machine that is built to last?

 Sure it'll pull a great shot, but ONLY IF you do everything near perfect every single time you want to pull a shot (including when you're half-asleep first thing in the morning) 3) Everything is manual, so if you're not the kind of person who wants to let it warm up for 15-30 minutes before your morning espresso, learn that when the light says "ready" to brew the first dozen times it's actually not, AND learn how to compensate for other quirks (like temperature swings while pulling a shot and steaming) then you won't be happy... 4) Uses a "standard size 58mm" group head & portafilter (but NOT "the standard" E61, so you must use parts specifically for a Gaggia)  The BAD: 1) Temperature control is a joke! After a few weeks of inconsistent shots, I put a couple thermocouples on the boiler & group head (being a Technical Director / engineer by day, I was curious to see what's going on) and I observed wild temperature swings of over 20 degrees F!!! No wonder there's so many folks adding PID kits to this thing (as I've recently done) 2) Water discharge into the portafilter isn't exactly even 3) The 58mm portafilter also means you'll need near perfect puck prep to get things perfectly extracted 4) The group head sticks down into the portafilter further than what you see in some other machines making it slightly more difficult to maximize your dose, so you might have to put less grinds in the portafilter to avoid smashing them into the shower screen or use larger/deeper baskets than what you're used to with other machines 5) Due to above, grinds can easily contact or get into the shower screen, and I found using a super thin screen on top of the grinds or a paper filter practically a must 6) No pre-infusion, but you can trick the machine into doing this by venting with the steam knob while starting to pull a shot, or add a dimmer (as I did) to make the pump variable speed/flow 7) The distance between the group head/portafilter and the drip tray is SUPER short! Forget about putting any normal size cup in there (even for a latte), especially with a scale unless you remove or buy one of the slim drip trays

Good but Not Great

I just pulled my first shot with Eureka Mignon Specialita + Gaggia Pro Classic after using shitty grinder for a while, and IT’S EYE OPENING. I’m very far away from sophisticated coffee snob, so couldn’t imagine that I could taste such a huge difference with the same type of coffee but only changing the grinder.

 Well it came in this past Thursday and I’ve pulled around 30 shots or so and they have all been nowhere close to good. I’ve been using 17g of a locally roasted coffee that was roasted on the 3rd of April and pulling 34g out in about 28 seconds.

GAGGIA CLASSIC PRO - Small But Mighty Home Espresso

* Gaggia Classic Pro (seems like the ideal starter machine but I’m worried I’ll get frustrated quickly). * Rancilio Silvia (heard great things, similar category of Gaggia Classic Pro but more expensive). * Cafelat Roboto (love the look and the idea of manual pressing but it’s still expensive and no milk steamer). *

As a dual boiler machine, there is both a 0.75 liter boiler dedicated exclusively to brewing and a 2 liter boiler dedicated to steaming. Both boilers are made of stainless steel and wrapped with thermal insulation. The boilers have been bolted to the frame of the machine for structural stability but are easily removable, an element of the highly modular internal design that allows for easy servicing and repair. Brew pressure is provided by the powerful RPM motor and rotary pump which cuts down on the noise produced by the brewing process and allows you to connect the the machine directly to a water line or use the 3 liter water reservoir. The last facet of the brewing process, the E61 brew group is made of solid chrome plated brass and is constantly heated by a thermosyphon system to ensure maximum temperature stability. This unit has an insulated steam wand with a four-hole steam tip. The hot water wand is similarly insulated to help prevent accidental burns. The benefit of these valves is that they don’t need to be fully opened or closed to regulate the flow of steam/water. The way it works is that by turning the knobs, pressure is either added to or released from a spring that holds the valves shut. This prevents you from having to rotate the knobs numerous times to open or close the valves. The manual three way valve which is controlled by the brewing lever drains any excess pressure and water directly into the 1 liter drip tray, keeping the internal components dry. A unique and desirable feature of the Pro 700 is its front mounted dual boiler PID display that monitors both the brew and steam boiler temperatures and allows you to adjust both, a beneficial feature that allows you to achieve more precise brewing conditions to extract certain notes and flavors from different coffees. PID has its built-in shot timer that switches on when you begin brewing. The front of the machine also sports dual pressure gauges that monitor both pump and boiler pressure.

To me, a better design would be a fill port at the front of the machine. Of course, you can plumb the Profitec and never have to worry about filling it - perhaps this is what they really intend, except I like the consistency I get from using the same brand of bottled water over and over, rather than putting my city water supply through it.  Of course, the Profitec is expensive

  Anyway, on the journey to the perfect cup of coffee, the Profitec 700 is definitely a worthwhile companion. Definitely recommended!

.just feels like it would be a good built-in feature. Still, I do like that this is pretty much a "minimalist" machine with no frills beyond what it takes to make excellent espresso.  But of course the proof is in the taste of what pours into your cup, and here is where the Profitec excels

  One final complaint is that I don't like the placement of the internal tank at the back of the machine. To fill it, you really need to get to the right rear of the unit. If you have it even partially tucked under cabinetry, this means you'll be lifting a 75 pound machine every time it needs filling. To me, a better design would be a fill port at the front of the machine

The right machine for making espresso

Serious concerns about maintenance and longevity with a very tech driven machine. Runner up: Profitec 700 - can pull great shots, E61 group, solid manufacturer and longevity/reliability.

 Just unscrew the boiler securing wing nut, attache the cup rail and you’re basically done. 

 This is important as the position of the e61 group will place your glasses pretty close to the front edge of the drip tray. Theres a lot of unused real-estate, most pronounced when using the double spout PF. An odd design flaw that makes positioning your glass awkward, even more so if you use a scale. 

The first thing youll notice is how shiny this machine is. With all of its corners fully wrapped in high polish steel, this thing really shines. My Expobar was certainly shiny as well, but not like this. The fit and finish is very refined, no gaps, no rattling, no surface left outside of the aesthetic of the machine

 The tamper is certainly better than what many machines will give you, its steel, it has some wight and the handle is okay, but Ill stick to my custom Reg Barber. The small cup tray is steel, features the “P” cutout and fits on the drip tray snuggly with no rattle when running the machine. I do not plumb in my machines, but the kit is provided, and the drip tray is pre-drilled with a steel plug in place in the case that you decide to.

A premium tier machine with only minor flaws

I start to use a puck screen with my triple basket on a bottomless portafilter. There are multiple benefits for my configuration:

Perfect machine so far

 It is very easy to lift out and to place back in, as it has a self-sealing valve at the bottom _„_ way different than a much older machine that I had about 20 years ago where I have to carefully tilt the empty and then full tank out of and the back into the espresso machine while maneuvering a silicone hose with a weighted pickup _„_ the Pro 700's drop-in tank is a much slicker operation! The tank has a magnetic float which keeps the machine from running dry, though it's annoying if it stops your shot right in the middle when the tank gets low. If you use the tank, it's best to fill it often. The tray to keep the cups warm has an "over-tray" which also serves as a dust cover for the water tank. Since the rails which hold the cups are part of the over-tray, it's easy use the rails to lift the tray, including all of your espresso cups, in order to access the water tank _„_ this protects the espresso cups from striking the floor - a nice touch

I am quite pleased with my purchase of the Profitec Pro 700 to replace my nearly 16-year-old heat exchanger machine. I paired this Profitec with the Baratza Vario-Forte AP grinder, replacing my old Andrea grinder (once I fix the current problem with my old espresso machine, it and the old grinder will move to a new home).
