I generally just use a fender jazz bass into a Sansamp VT bass for rock and metal tones, dialed in to taste.

I'm demoing a post-punk / noise rock single at the moment, largely to work out the arrangements &amp; tones. The chorus is very loud, similar to some of Swans' material, and has an aggressive, drone bass part.

I've been exploring bass recording lately, and while I've more or less nailed our default "rock" sound, we occasionally dip into more aggressive, faster sounds, which I'm finding tend to sound rather flabby.  

I'd love to get crunchier, more articulate tones, but I'm not sure where to start: although I'm assuming some amount of parallel processing is involved.

I just tracked a nice straightforward example via SansAmp Bass Driver, and I reckon it's a decent opportunity to ask the hive-mind what your approach is, and whether you have any tips on getting nice, distorted bass tones?

How do you like recording aggressive rock bass tones?

 It's a really just solid piece of wood. It's on the heavy side as jazz basses usually go compared to say a precision bass, but it's still really comfortable to play sitting or standing up. And then you got your maple neck, just a really simple put together instrument. So while this bass was amazing out of the box, amazing stock, it was just a really good player

 You can just flip this switch and you're in that tuning. It drops that whole string and it's really easy to do and it's really easy to set up, especially while playing live. It's been super useful and really easy. It allows me to, you know, especially my solo sets, I can just drop this down and then there's no need to tune

 The case feels solid and has a good amount of padding inside. The accessory compartment is large and has a lid with a latch, so there's no risk that the vibrato bar will come out of it and scratch my guitar.  The reason why i didn't give it five stars is that it's heavy - 15 pounds! The case that came with my other guitar (an Ibanez) is also super sturdy but much lighter than this. If you carry your guitar around a lot, you probably want to look for a lighter case

1st Rate! I had read all those negative reviews, and when I received my case is April 2019 I checked it all over very carefully! It is outstanding in every respect :) Great materials, excellent quality control,this is a G&G case built in the USA, and I could'nt be any happier with it! That's my new Hendrix Monterey Strat in it... what a perfect home :) :) #PoodlePlushbaby! ;)

 I remember seeing this bass at NAMM and my jaw dropped because the finish is absolutely insane. Then to compliment that, you have a clear pickguard as well as black hardware, and this is driven by Music Man's own bridge and different hardware too, and I have to say they hold up really well, especially the tuning is actually extremely stable, and it works very well. For the pickup, you have Sterling's own H1 Alnico humbucker, and this you can get a lot of really thick, very punchy, just really rich sounds with it that's going to have that classic Music Man growl to it, and then that combined with their three band active preamp really leads to a lot of different ways you can sculpt your tone, and really especially you get that really great Music Man growl when you add the mids just a little more on top of it, and what's great is it sounds like a Music Man. It sounds like its older, more expensive USA made stingray, and there's a lot of just truly amazing tones you can get with it, but no matter what, they're going to be very thick and very full

 This is the Sterling by Music Man Stingray Ray 34 PB, and it's a truly excellent bang for your buck bass full of extremely thick and very punchy tones, all for only $800. So the Ray 34 PB is brand new to the 2019 line of basses for Sterling by Music Man. If you don't know Sterling by Music Man, it's the made in Indonesia brand of Music Man guitars and basses, and you get truly excellent value for every single instrument. While they're made in Indonesia, they're brought over to the United States, then they're rigorously checked and inspected and set up and then sent out to distributors

 Now this particular model features an ash body, though if you get a painted body, those are mahogany. So this one has an ash body and a roasted maple neck. That's right, just like the current US Stingray lineup, these have roasted maple necks as well. The pickup is Sterling's own H1 El Niko Humbucker, and you have a three-band preamp

I'm 15. I don't have a lot of money. What's a good cheap bass guitar for beginners?

The Ray34 I have is probably the best that Sterling has to offer before getting an EBMM bass. But given that Sterling basses sound almost exactly the same as an actual EBMM bass, you have to decide for yourself whether you think that the extra nice neck and lighter weight is worth the $2k more. The Ray34 tuners are also known to be kind of janky, specifically on the purple sparkle finishes. Besides that though, Sterling's are well worth the money, even the SUB series

My question is, what is the difference between the Sterling model of this bass and the original Music Man model in terms of playability/feel and sound? 

The prices seem to range from about $400 for a Sterling and up to $3000 for an original Music Man. That's a big range, so it's hard to wrap my head around what could be so much better in the Music Man Stingray. I am not made of money but would consider buying a Music Man if it's truly worth the price.

Sterling Stingray vs. Music Man Stingray, what's the difference besides price?

 The roasted maple neck and fretboard is very dark compared to the advertised photo and makes it difficult to see the fret markers. Other than that this is a pleasure to play and I'm now sold on getting a Ray35.

 The weight is roughly the same and the finish is fantastic. One con I do have is the fret markers are black as they should be white. The Sterling by Musicman Ray34 is a great value if your looking for that classic Stingray look and sound. I'm quite impressed with this bass. Comparing it to my ErnieBall Stingray Special which costs more than double, this feels and sounds just as good good. I will say the ErnieBall feels a little more polished with the nicer tuners and the neck being smoother
