I really love the Epiphone Viola Bass and I have no clue why. I hate sunbursts, I hate the bridge, and I play very noisy metal. But something about how it sounds is just so good. Like not even the better looking (and probably better built) basses sound like it

We all have that instrument that just speaks to us, and we don't know why. We love it for some irrational emotional reason. But we don't own it... there's some reason we haven't done the work to buy this crazy thing we love despite all logic and good sense...

For me, it's the Warwick Dolphin. I'm not a Warwick guy... I have a couple of Fenders, Dingwalls, and some oddball instruments. I am TOTALLY HAPPY with my collection, and all the sounds I can make with my current horde of instruments. I do not need a new bass. Ever.

But, if someone came up to me on the street, handed me the Dolphin, and said "Give me $7000 and this is yours", I know I couldn't say no. I'd sell my left nut, right then and there. No question. I love this bass with all my heart and I have no idea why.

So. What is your "irrational love" bass?

I would say both the Epi and the Hofner are equivalent in terms of the tailpieces they use. The bridges on these two instruments look almost identical to me

 The Hofner has a pickguard which the Epi doesn't, but I don't see a need for one. I play both with a pick and with my fingers, and no scratches so far. I never reach the wood with a pick, no matter how aggressively I play.  THE ELECTRONICS & TONE: Both instruments use 2 humbucker pickups

  THE NECK: The Epi wins hands down in quality of craftsmanship. You notice this mostly in how the neck feels in your hands, although just looking at the body and the frets makes the same impression. The Epi is made in China, and the Hofner is made in Indonesia - in my overall experience with the inexpensive Asian imports, Chinese instruments are a bit better in quality than Indonesian ones. Well, regardless of the country of origin, the Hofner I tried was very obviously inferior to the Epi

A better [affordable] Beatle bass

This is a great bass. I had tried the Hofner Violin basses, there were nice, but this bass just feels right in your hands. It has a more solid and nice feel; very nicely made. It's a little heavier than the Hofner basses, because it's a semi-hollow instead of fully hollow

 This I like actually, because it's a perfect mix between hollow and solid, and this makes the bass very versatile, from mellow jazzy tones, to hard rocking fuzzy riffs. I definitely recommend putting on flatwound strings. It suits it perfectly, and I don't even play The Beatles on this bass. IT'S GOOD FOR OTHER STUFF TOO

 The only problem with this bass (and any other violin bass, or any bass with a moveable bridge) is that getting the intonation perfect is near impossible. But with a little bit of adjusting and fiddling you can get it pretty close and sounding great.

 It has a more solid and nice feel; very nicely made. It's a little heavier than the Hofner basses, because it's a semi-hollow instead of fully hollow. This I like actually, because it's a perfect mix between hollow and solid, and this makes the bass very versatile, from mellow jazzy tones, to hard rocking fuzzy riffs. Great bass

 The sound is classic: plodding and full. I have medium flat-wound D'Addario strings on it to give it extra presence. I play it thumb-style (to mimic an upright sound) or muted with a pick (because it sounds so cool). The short-scale neck give this thing more bass presence

 It is so easy (on the hands) to play. It is light enough that its weight is not an issue. The electronics, hardware and construction have upheld so well. Great purchase (I've changed my 4-stars to 5-stars)

 I've since bought an Epi SG 3 and have had a fretless Yamaha. The Epi continues to be my favorite. It is so easy (on the hands) to play. It is light enough that its weight is not an issue

 So Heath, the SR basses are notoriously fantastic throughout the whole range, aren't they? Very, very popular models. A lot of bass for not too bad a price, really. Yeah, and they do everything, like they're very ergonomic when they're on the body as well, hence the big top of the horn that'll sit perfectly on you. Some specs on this guy

Ibanez 2019 SR500E Bass Guitar

Or at least no longer a great deal. 4-5 years ago back when they were US$275 new they were steals, but now that they're $430 plus tax and shipping, they're no longer this amazing moneyball solution, they're at best a decent bass at a fair price. In my opinion if you've got $500 to spend on a bass I'd get a used Mexican Fender or Ibanez SR500, that's where the real value is at that price point.

So, I play guitar, for like 9 years now.

Aaand I wanna get into bass as well, buuut I'm on a pretty tight budget.

So I've been looking at two basses at &lt;500€, which are a Squier Classic Vibe 70s Jazz Bass, and a Sire Marcus Miller V5 Alder

So the Sire is around 80€ more expensive, which, in my situation, is a good chunk of cash - which I could in theory spend though

My question is: is the Sire a significant upgrade from the squier? I know it's got a roasted maple neck and all, but is that a big factor, if I'm going to distort my sound either way (I mainly play metal)?

[Question] What bass to go for as a beginner?

On the plus side, it's comfortable, nice to play, good quality for the price. The preamp offers many possibilities once you've figured out the controls, and it also has a passive mode. The pickups work well in both mode, and they have 4 wires so if you know how to solder you can add switches to get more sound options.

Ibanez vs Sire

the main reason to get a SR500 is I believe those are the cheapest Ibanez that have those sweet bartolini pickups. I have a 500 and it's great, I think if you get a used one in good condition and give it a proper setup it will make you very happy

I prefer playing alternative and metal hence wanting a 5-string (I play other genres for practice but we all have that style that makes us happy). I love me some Ibanez and am trying to decide between the sr300 and sr500. As far as I can see they have the same features but the sr505 improved hardware. Ibanez SR305 vs SR505: worth the extra$?

Ibanez is pretty lightweight. The SR series by Ibanez is a good way to go. I used to own an SR500 and it was a great bass. It’s a bass I certainly miss and if you can find a pre-owned one in good shape they tend to be priced pretty reasonably
