 Hi everyone, stick here for Maplewood Studio and today I'm at Anderson's Music Store in Guildford checking out some bass guitars and in my hands I have the Epiphone Thunderbird Reverse 4 bass. Okay so let me take you through the spec, we have obviously the classic Thunderbird shape, we've got a mahogany body, we've got a dark maple, a hard maple neck so the colour is pretty consistent with the mahogany stain and everything so it looks like it should be there, a rosewood board with 20 frets, it's kind of a slightly chunkier neck than your or slightly fatter than the profile, it feels slightly bigger in the hand than your typical jazz and P bass or the Stingray behind me, it feels a little bit wider, it's probably if you've got small hands it might not be for you but I would suggest grabbing hold of one and trying it first to see if you like it or not. We've got obviously the classic Thunderbird style headstock, the tuning pegs, bear in mind this is a very very affordable bass they're not the best in the world, they do the job but they're a little bit you know could be a lot more positive, a lot more precise in adjustment and tuning but they do the job and they get you up and running. Electronic wise we have two humbuckers, I think these are called T bass plus humbuckers, very simple configuration, volume for the front, volume for the back, master tone and we have a nice black hardware bridge going on there, again with three anchor points, all very typical traditional Thunderbird stuff with a string loading over the top

 We've got obviously the classic Thunderbird style headstock, the tuning pegs, bear in mind this is a very very affordable bass they're not the best in the world, they do the job but they're a little bit you know could be a lot more positive, a lot more precise in adjustment and tuning but they do the job and they get you up and running. Overall excellent build quality, finish is great, I kind of like the old retro look of the natural tobacco burst kind of thing with the white scratch plate. The big difference is the neck joint, on a traditional Gibson you'd have a set neck, bear in mind this is an affordable guitar, very affordable guitar, we've got the bolt on neck configuration here, not a bad thing in any way shape or form, it's just a big difference between the two basses

Epiphone Thunderbird Reverse Bass Guitars are GO!

The drummer of my band just lent me his epiphone thunderbird and I am blown away by how good it sounds. Ive always heard predominantly not good things about the thunderbird such as it being too muddy or it having a bad tone, along with the neck dive and awkward body shape. After putting on some fresh strings and running it through my rig i am in love with how it sounds! The low end/ low mids are super tight and the mid to high midrange is very present and bright!

 So we've got two pickups, we've got two volume controls and a tone. So what I'll do is I'll turn the volume down on the bridge pickup, just giving you the neck. Okay, that's just the neck. So if I kill the volume on that now, bring in the bridge, just give you the bridge

 But it not only looks great, it sounds great too, and you can get a range of different tones out of the guitar. So let's check it out. So we've got two pickups, we've got two volume controls and a tone. So what I'll do is I'll turn the volume down on the bridge pickup, just giving you the neck

 Okay, that's just the neck. So if I kill the volume on that now, bring in the bridge, just give you the bridge. Okay, and now what I'll do is I'll bring both the volumes up for both pickups, so you're getting both together. It's a really versatile bass actually, tone-wise

Epiphone Thunderbird IV Bass Guitar Review

It's OK. I found it needed set up, which is not unusual, and some of the finishing on the fretboard was a bit rough. Generally the E-Thunderbird is decent enough to play, and the pick-ups are OK, and the metalwork is good quality. For the money, it's quite good value, though it might need some adjustment

One thing to consider is the size and unusual shape of the bass, so either a dedicated case or a T-Bird shaped gig bag is required. It won't sit on a regular stand either

 IF you look around you can find them cheap. As I said in my first review one of mine is the white one with the chrome pickups. They are standard guitar sized pickups so you can find chrome humbucker surrounds that really make it look great. I bought another Black and a Sunburst

 The black one was a little beat up but got it for a song with the hardshell. I typically modify my guitars (see the Harley TB in my previous posting). I decided the Black one was a little 'bland' so since it was so cheap I decided I'd bling it a bit. As I said in my previous posting the pickups are different the black to chrome, both can sound great and with the same configuration of 2 Vol, 1 Tone you basically have a Jazz Bass with humbuckers so you have that same type of versatility of sound and remember your AMP has EQ too so you can dial in a ton of tones

 They are standard guitar sized pickups so you can find chrome humbucker surrounds that really make it look great. I bought another Black and a Sunburst. The black one was a little beat up but got it for a song with the hardshell. I typically modify my guitars (see the Harley TB in my previous posting)

 They are lighter than the Gibson and sound 'close enough' for 1/4 the price of the Gibson. ALSO if you move the strap button to one of the neck bolts the neck dive diminishes alot, not completely, but wAY more liveable. I am very happy with all 5 of mine and have no plans of ever parting with them. The ONLY problem I have is deciding which 2 to take to a gig

I bought this bass as a backup to my '82 Ibanez Roadstar II. Out of the box, the intonation was perfect and it has a smooth, playable neck. It is much heavier than my Ibanez and has a larger and longer neck that will take getting used to. The neck reminds me of a J-bass neck

My major problems with it are the unbalanced feel that can probably be fixed by different strap placement, which may void the warranty

Not Bad - Just Awkward

This guitar is a looker, beautiful quality finish and the sunburst body is gorgeous. Delivers pounding heavy bass, and good tone control. Be aware that the head stock is very heavy, and the guitar tends to nose dive to the floor is your don't support the neck, you might want to try wearing one at your local GC is possible. Also, this deal doesn't come with a case, and you'll need a special gig bag or case to house this special bass

Pounding Bass, heavy headstock

This bass is loud and just fun i love all the thing about it. sound is great all you need and more great all around. this is my first bass and i have played for four years. i love evering about it still

 The output volume on it is very good, I was upgrading from a £150 Chord bass and it's far ahead in terms of volume. The bass looks much more expensive than it is and honestly it looks great hanging on a wall. My only gripe with it is that the tuners are absolutely awful, feels like they're about to snap off and it feels like the strings are about to snap even if it's just Standard E/Drop D tuning. Basses definitely get tight when they're close to tension but this takes it to a whole new level

Not a bad bass at all, looks very vintage and it is absolutely huge. I'm a 6 foot guy and it even looks massive on me, it's got some nice weight to it and it arrived set up rather nicely. help me decide which one to buy

Was looking for something more trebly and melodic than my Precision. Went to the store, tried some basses. Didn't know much about the Marcus Miller Sire basses, but fell in love immediately. The guy at the store even said "I could tell you liked that one", because I was jamming on it for quite some time haha
