This sharpener is a good deal for the money, especially if sharpening with Whetstones isn’t your thing or have the time to learn a new skill. I’m a little concerned about the quality and durability of the unit. With that said it should last for sometime if you’re only sharpening kitchen knives. I’d recommend buying a two sided leather strop to complement this unit

 The stropping the machine did was insufficient to put a decent, quality edge, on my knife. I then used my leather strop and now it’s razor sharp. Even though the manufacturer says you can sharpen pocket knives and the like with this machine, it works much, much, better when used with kitchen knives. It’s simple to use, easy to learn, you’ll like the results so long as you use a leather strop and you’re not a knife sharpening snob

The media could not be loaded. the device itself is fantastic, I sharpened an old Victorinox chef knife which was very dull to hair shaving blade in under 2 minutes, so far so good I just received it today and loved it, I shipped it internationally to Jordan which cost me extra almost 80$ in shipping and taxes and I believe it worth the money.  but the package was awful, it arrived in brown cheap cartoon box with only 1 styrofoam to hold it from one side, it was loose in the box and I was lucky It didn't get damaged during the overseas shipping and handling, I know many peoples commented on the same point about packaging and they should focus on this issue and resolve it. also, the plastic casing material is cheap

Amazing sharpener, exceeded my expectation but the packaging is awful.

 I was able to take a kitchen knife from dull to professional shape in 8 passes though stage 1 and 4 passes through stage 2 and 3. Well with the cost if you enjoy extremely sharp knives.

Well worth the price!

 I got better results, but still, not extremely sharp. Looked at videos to see what I was doing wrong, but still could not get good results. Then I read about the Trizor XV in Cooks Illustrated and I thought, hmmm, this looks like the thing for me.  So, it arrived today and I spent no time in getting to work on my knives

 I was able to find the infamous burr (which I never got with the other methods, even after lighting a few candles to the knife goddess). The directions are simple, the operation is simple, the knives get sharp. What else do any of us mere mortals need? I got some grapes (no tomatoes on hand) that were a bit too soft and was able to cut veeeeeery thin slices without applying any pressure, simply by the weight of the knife.  I am sure all the other methods out there are great and do an amazing job, they just don't work for me

I am not a chef. I am not a knife connoisseur. I am just a regular guy that loves to cook, have a half dozen knives and like to keep them sharp. My lot consists of a Victorinox Santoku (my most expensive one), a Chicago Cutlery chefs knife that I love because it was mi first knife and it has a very comfortable wooden handle, a serrated bread one probably from Bed bath anb beyond, a smaller IKEA 5" chefs knife for my kids because it is perfect size for their hands and a couple 3" and 4" paring knives I got from my mother in law that have no brand and look very proletariat

 Then I read about the Trizor XV in Cooks Illustrated and I thought, hmmm, this looks like the thing for me.  So, it arrived today and I spent no time in getting to work on my knives. Love the heft of the apparatus, the functional, yet industrial design and best of all that it did not require me to take lessons from a Nepalese monk on some forsaken mountain on the third full moon of a leap year surrounded by happy goats and a couple oxen to get my knives sharp!  Man, this thing simply just works. My knives got REALLY sharp

 Even though it still counts as "hand sharpening", it's "semi-guided" and it's SO fast and easy to whip out and use and put away. I love my KME but sometimes I'm really just not in the mood to deal with clamps and angles and playing tetris to fit it back in its box.

Solid Product for an Unsure Customer.

The product is easy to use and puts a very sharp edge on my kitchen and hunting knives and the results are easy to duplicate. Great product and very portable. This is a must have in my kitchen and tackle box for in the field sharpening of fillet and hunting knives.

Spyderco Sharpmaker - Awesome!

  For the one I purchased from Amazon, the rods are a bit too small and fit very loosely in the base. The ceramic rods are a bit loose, but the medium grit rods are very loose and wobble around too much in the base. It's somewhat usable this way if you're careful, but I wanted a bit more precision to sharpen my Spyderco knives. In fact, given the high quality of every Spyderco knife I have and the ingenuity of this design, I found it hard to believe this was a genuine Spyderco

 Not only are they a bit too small to fit snugly in the base, the ceramic rods that came with mine also have nicks in the corner edges, so one has to be careful to not use the area of the rod with those defects. I marked the nicks with indelible ink to speed up setting it up.  Great design(!!!) but the fit and finish isn't up to the incredibly high quality I've learned to expect from Spyderco. I want to give it 5 stars, but the two I've purchased miss that mark

Quality control?

 Looked interesting but was not too keen on my chances of getting and keeping the right angles for all the knife sizes. There are tricks on the web like using a certain amount of pennies or quarters stacked up at the back of the knife to raise it up and get the right angel. But the examples I saw seemed to be mostly for bigger chef knives. What happens when the size of the knife changes? If you have to go from a wide Chef to utility, steak or really thin boning or paring knives, then how many pennies? And then I wondered, if I did manage to find the angle can I keep it throughout the sharpening? Maybe not

 Liked the look of this unit as it looked pretty well constructed and thought out. And seemed simple and fairly fool proof to use, just pull down along the rods. (Hint; This unit comes with a DVD training video as well as a booklet. The actual training video is uploaded on youtube by Spyderco in 4 parts

Great Sharpening System

Look, this is a great system, but it's just not for me. I just needed a way to keep our kitchen/steak knives super sharp (they've become super dull lately), I have no fancy/tactical knives, no high-end Japanese/German steel things. Just A Little Bit Too Much Work Esp. for working Dull Mid-Quality Kitchen Knives

 I guess I’ll start outside and work my way in. Two problems I had before I even got the product setup and ready to even attempt to use were related to the case itself. First off the case is of a friction lock design. Meaning as you push the outer case cover down presumably when done using the sharpmaker for your purposes the top of the case fits on snugly

 As mentioned above it absolutely is not worth it’s weight in dirt.  I suppose if you know nothing at all about how to sharpen a knife and are given a knife that is as sharp as the handle of a spoon then maybe you’d think it does a stellar job by ‘improving’ that ‘edge’ on your knife. But if you are competent in any regard in the art of knife sharpening you’ll very quickly realize this product is a joke as mentioned above not worth it’s weight in dirt.  I would give it zero out of five stars if I could
