 The touch points are key on this bike. Number 9, they like to focus on the little things, so if you look at these pedals right here, you've got skateboard grip tape on the pedals, so it's going to keep your Converse shoes stuck to that pedal as you're veering around those corners around town.  $500-900 should get you something name brand and quality built. You'll want an aluminum frame and carbon fork for lightness.

I live in a flat city and am looking for an upgrade from my SS that has served me well except:

\- I'd like gears, especially since I now use it to tow my kid(s)

\- I'd like it to be lightweight as possible (see #1), plus I lug it in and out of our apartment. Likely 100% aluminum but I've seen some options with carbon forks. 

\- Don't think I want full carbon.

\- No strong feelings about brakes, disc, whatever

\- budget: $1000 for something perfect

lightweight, 11ish speed, flat bar for flat city riding/paved paths

I had a 2012 Specialized Sirrus Comp (now stolen), which was excellent, but I’d love to get something a tad more upright (like a normal hybrid bike, rather than a fitness bike like the sirrus) and with any other comfort improvements (less stiff frame? I’m not sure what I’m looking for here. Not anything major like shocks, but I’m going to put a softer seat on it anyway).
