 Honestly, I don't think the Commandante is well priced given the value you get out of it.

 Personally, I would get the Virtuoso+ if you really don't want to deal with hand grinding or you're OK spending extra money for faster grinding -- I would expect hand grinding to take 2-5 times as long as electric grinding depending on your arm strength. I would get the Lido 3 if you want to get the best performance:price ratio and you just want a very good (but not the best) grinder for any purpose. Honestly, I don't think the Commandante is well priced given the value you get out of it.

I want to upgrade my cheap electric burr grinder. It’s easy enough to use but the grind is really inconsistent and I see it recommended basically nowhere. 

I’m deciding between the Comandante, Lido 3, and Virtuoso+. My main brew methods are aeropress, French press, and phin. I could see myself getting into pour over one day. 

I know the Virtuoso+ would be simplest but I don’t mind work for a good cup. Are the manual grinders at this price point that much more consistent? Will I get a noticeably better cup?

Since I switch beans and brew methods rather frequently I’m not sure the Lido is for me since it’s stepless. 

I’ve heard the Comandante can have questionable build quality (lot of plastic) but I imagine it’s fine for normal use. It is hard to find and even their suggested dealers seem to sell it for anywhere between 250 and 350 which is frustrating. 

Thoughts on what grinder would be best for me?

 Versatile settings Adjustable times, and pulse mode.  Cons- *There is a learning curve for grounds! Everyone has different taste. Plus the pamphlet is pretty off in terms of what ground settings go good with each type of coffee. I think the settings say 8 for Espresso

 To grind the equivalent of two generous scoops of beans for one 16oz mug of coffee (pour-over), we: Set the timer to 10.1 seconds, it auto memorizes that setting. Set the grind selection to #9. Press the button

 Then run the unit until all remaining beans have been ground. Then service and clean.  Changing Grind Setting, important: There are only two times/ways you are allowed to adjust the grind setting. 1

 If beans are in the chamber, you can only adjust the grind setting when the machine is running.

 We'd equate our strength preference for coffee to a 16oz, two-shot Americano. So, the 10.1secs at #9, was good.  NOTE: Download and read all the literature!  Service or Cleaning, important: Before servicing or cleaning the burrs, remove all beans by turning the unit upside down and emptying them into another container

Good quality.  Love this machine!

 turning the dial up for a long grind to brew 10 cups is easy.. but if I need to reduce the time, it goes backwards by a 10th of a second.

 beans grind even all the way through.. zero complaints on how it does it's job. What I can't figure out and is a bit of a pain is the "timer" to grind

My last grinder had a timer, and I would just turn it on and wait, not the case here, I have to hold down the grind button with my finger the entire time. I would not recommend this grinder, and would have returned it

Don't buy it

 It grinds finely and very evenly; I am getting better espresso from my La Pavoni 'Carina Grande' than I ever have before. Perhaps because it is direct drive, with no step down gears, it is quieter than either of my previous burr grinders.  The 'fork' holds the La Pavoni portafilter just fine. It sits snugly, and doesn't vibrate out, or tip as the coffee fills the basket

 Both look fine; both do what they're designed to do really well; both could be a lot better made.  Bottom line: the Rocky probably *will* improve your coffee. Don't expect to leave it to your children, though.

This is a really good coffee grinder. I wore out a Baratza burr grinder and I have a Capresso that I use for decaf: the Rocky is a better grinder than either. It grinds finely and very evenly; I am getting better espresso from my La Pavoni 'Carina Grande' than I ever have before.  Perfect Expresso. Until you actually pull your FIRST PERFECT SHOT, you will think that all expresso is bitter. No, a perfect shot is actually sweet tasting.

 Why? Because you need to reduce the number of adjustable variable...or you will drop to your knees in a puddle of tears when your heartfelt journey for the coffee chalis turns to total frustration

The Zen of "the perfect expresso shot"

 * Fast, quiet-ish operation - I can hold a conversation on the phone while grinding with only minimal annoyance of the other party. * Flat burr for nice price point - Flat burrs have a better grind control than conicals, but often are a bit more expensive. As some have noted, the $350-ish price point of the Rocky is hard to beat unless you go used on other commercial grinders. * Good for AeroPress - Since one of my daily methods is Aeropress, I do need to call out this machine for a good Aeropress grind

Great entry-level Espresso grinder with some gotchas

  #1 is the most important. Grind rating is very important to me. This is a professional grinder in a way that you would expect to waste some grounds to test the grind and quality of coffee per cup. You aren't going to do that every morning as you get ready for work

 But still a better scale is necessary. As you get to know the grinder I guess you will figure out the right settings.  UPDATE May 2017:  Per customer support:  "When it comes to grind size it's really trial and error. You will need to experiment to get the correct pour and there is to way we can guide you through that as it is really trial & error with your coffee

Good but not great.  Necessary for the cnnoisseur but, for the discerning it could be better.

 My Rancillo never came with a warranty card (doesn't appear this exists) and after reading all the reviews on here and seeing the quality of the machine I didn't expect to ever need one.  It looks like I must have just got a machine that somehow fell thru the gaps of quality control. I now have a very expensive $350 pound paperweight sitting on my counter that I can do nothing with after less than 8 weeks of use, so frustrating.  I hope amazon / seller come thru ASAP as I also have very expensive fresh ground beans sitting at my house going to waste and an expensive Espresso machine begging to be fed
