At $399 (£419, AU$749), the 2020 iPhone SE remains an affordable entry into the world of iPhones and iOS. But the iPhone 11 has recently seen a significant price cut to $499, while the more recent iPhone 13 Mini comes in at $729 (£699, AU$1,199). That's before we even consider the plethora of affordable rivals running Android.

It's Apple's attempt at providing an affordable iPhone option, with more cut-down specs than the other phones launched in 2020 but with a much lower price. Those specs include a 4.7-inch display, an Apple A13 processor and a single 12-megapixel rear camera. Storage starts at 64GB, it supports Qi wireless charging and there's no 5G

It's nippy to use, and powerful enough to handle anything you'd likely throw at it, including most, if not all, of the biggest games to be found in the App Store. It might be a budget phone, but its processor power means you're getting anything but a budget experience. This will also mean your phone will remain usable for longer, being able to cope with new versions of iOS as they arrive.

 As a photographer, I wouldn't want to go without these shooting options, but they come at an additional price.  The iPhone 11 packs a standard camera and an additional ultra-wide lens which is great for capturing a wide scene in front of you. If you're into your photography, that extra hundred bucks for the iPhone 11 might be a savvy spend.

 Now, I think again, if Apple had designed a new small iPhone for 2016 they'd have both of those things. They'D have the new touch ID and force touch, but again, since they recycle the old body, there's not quite enough room for that and there you have it. It'S pretty much everything you need to know about using an iPhone se. The one thing that surprised me actually was battery life

So it looks like it's kind of trying to fill those shoes so yeah. It really is the iPhone 5 and 5s body and all its rectangular chamfered glory. The 5s was my first iPhone ever so I kind of liked this squarish design

 It is a small phone and it has have a small 1642 milliamp hour battery, but the life is actually very good and I guess I'd attribute that to the a9 chip. Everything else fell right in line where I expect it. It'S just a really freaking small phone. So for 400 bucks should you buy it uh, it's not for everyone, that's for sure, plus you're, only getting 16 gigabytes at that price and I'd pretty much, never tell anyone to buy a 16 gig phone so for 500 or 600 bucks you'd have to really want A small phone after using it for a while, especially for reach ability, I kind of get the desire for smaller phones, not saying I could personally do it forever

Google's Friendliest Smartphone - Pixel 4a (LTT)

It’s enough for today, but in a few years, you may be turning to a battery case on the regular or seeking out a repair shop to replace your battery.

But before you put a crown on the Pixel 3A or the upcoming Pixel 4A, I want to point you to the iPhone SE’s video capabilities. It absolutely punches above its weight class, with 4K stabilized both optically and with software, extended dynamic range, and the option to go as high as 4K at 60fps. If you can get better video performance out of any phone that costs less than $500, I’d like to see it.

Is all of that worth the cost? Sure, for a lot of people. Is any of it necessary? Other than low-light photography, there’s virtually nothing that I do on those $1,000 phones that I can’t do equally well on the iPhone SE. It is fast, capable, reliable, and familiar. I’d miss those advanced features and more expansive displays, but not as much as you might think

I think that the iPhone 11 Pro manages portraits slightly better than the SE. But I also think that, by and large, portrait modes on phones all break down when you look closely. 

A strong case against $1,000 phones

**Charging**: I think the first charge took 1,5 hours with a USB-PD 18 watt charger. I charge overnight with an old 1 amp charger. I wish it had wireless charging, as my phone holder in our car supports it. Other than that, I don't really miss it, because of the great battery life without the need of topping up when not using the phone

 Also the weight of the 4a makes it a fantastic daily tool. It's so comfortable small that a thin cover doesn't ruin the overall size. Also it's not so small that two finger writing is cramped like on my wife's 2020 iPhone SE.

**Size**: obviously the difference in size is a primary objective. The 4a for surfing and reading news in one hand usage is a joy. Also the weight of the 4a makes it a fantastic daily tool. It's so comfortable small that a thin cover doesn't ruin the overall size

3 mm and weighs just 148g - meaning it is 1cm shorter and 3mm narrower than the Mi 9 SE. But if we are to compare the new iPhone SE to the old one, well, it's definitely grown bigger - 1.5cm taller and 1cm wider, to be specific. It also gained some 35g - a noticeable load if you are comparing those two directly
