But there are plenty of drawbacks that give me pause. Update: I ended up returning this laptop as the freezeups were happening more, even after I finished doing all of the windows/driver updates. Perhaps those will be fixed in future firmware patches, but I'd rather get a computer that functions "correctly" from day one. It's weird because as I mentioned, overall performance of this laptop is very impressive and far outshines my old 2 core macbook pro, but I don't have the same freezeups on the mac (running windows) - I imagine that this has something to do with lack of AMD drivers or something

Lenovo ThinkPad T480s Review

The ThinkPad T480s failed to nail frame rates higher than 30 frames per second, the minimum threshold for enjoyable gaming, even on medium-quality tests at 1,366 by 768. With its slightly superior Intel Iris Plus integrated graphics, the MacBook Pro delivered better frame rates, but that added graphics oomph didn't translate into better times on photo- and video-editing trials.

Battery Life

Great laptop for students on a budget!

The charger plug doesn’t fit nicely into the computer. I have to push it in harder than I would like to get it to charge, and I always worry that it’s going to break. However, the battery life is so great that I’ve only had to charge it once in the past three days. I’ll update later when I’ve spent more time with it

What (new or refurbished) laptop should I buy for 400-600 USD?

Lenovo Thinkpad. The only issue would be the battery life, but you could get multiple batteries since they're not internal.
