Need help with choosing a laptop for college

 Screen resolution is great and videos playing look like a TV screen. Small, obivously, but compact, lightweight and a fast machine. Would recommend!

 Again, not even as loud as my old laptop so it doesn't bother me at all.  WEIGHT: This is so lightweight! My old one was a bit heavy and clunky, so I appreciate the fact this is so light. The downside of that is that the casing does feel cheap. Like it might not survive getting dropped on the carpet

EDIT: thank you very much for all of your responses. Looks like the Lenovo Thinkpad E15 gen3 it is! One last question just for my own knowledge/information. Other googled results I did on my own prior to this post led me to laptops from alienware and Acer's predator... i saw those seem to be mostly for video games. Am I correct in understanding that those focus on aspects of gaming like video processor and graphics cards? In other words, what makes a 'gaming laptop' different or more geared towards gaming, than a buisness grade laptop i am going to get for trading? They both seem to emphasize significance of CPU and RAM.

My mom is getting me a new laptop for college and the limit is $1000. I’m not a very technologically adept person so I figured I would ask for some advice. I need a laptop to last me throughout college and is able to do necessary work such as writing papers and making presentations. I would also like to have a long battery life.  First of all the laptop has a plastic feeling. I understand it is E Series Lenovo, one of their entry-level quality laptops. I mean even with that, it should be a little better built. I also really need the backlit keyboard as I code in the dark, lights out

My company has defaulted to the ThinkPad E-series for quite some time. The new E15 is a great performer for the price, and Lenovo's ThinkPad reliability can't be beat.

 If  your days usually have you handling more intensive tasks -- such as  working in large databases or spreadsheets or creating multimedia  presentations -- or you just want more headroom for the future, go ahead  and get the i7. Battery life, though, is a bit disappointing. Lenovo claims up to 18  hours, but that's not for the more powerful configuration I tested with  the UHD-resolution display which ran for 6 hours, 21 minutes in our  streaming video test. With power and screen brightness adjustments, you  can get more work time out of it, but basically, if you want the best  battery life, skip the UHD HDR display

 There's a combo headphone/mic jack, too. Also, if you need to stay connected wherever you are, you can get LTE-A mobile access with the X1 Carbon.For the longest battery life, skip UHDPerformance on my X1 Carbon was excellent, which isn't much of a surprise  given its maxed-out configuration: 1.9GHz Intel Core i7-8665U vPro  processor, 16GB of 2,133MHz RAM and a 1TB PCIe NVMe SSD
