Sony IER-M9

In these few months, I bought the IER-M9 and the IER-Z1R. Both IEMs are so fantastic that I decided to keep them for different listening moods. The one thing I learnt having owned Sony IEMs (N3, M9, Z1R) is that their build quality is seriously second to none. Anyway, I wanted to venture into high end closed back headphones, and wanted something that would definitely last.

I got these to be my daily drivers. Running these on se not balanced. I've tried these on both my RME and dedicated amp I just can't seem to justify the price. My reference IEMs are typically: Earsonic EM-9, Sennheiser IE-300, Shure 846, and Aurisonic 2.5. I prefer lively, dynamic sound, with a mildly analytical side. I really really really wanna like these headphones. Finally a pair that fits perfectly and sounds great overall. Someone was kind enough to lend me their Sony IER-M9 for a couple days!. For some context, the IER-Z1R is one of my favorite IEMs; Sony struck gold with whatever they did to achieve such coherency in a hybrid. And in a similar vein, Sony's really done something special with the M9's timbre. Coming off the VE8, it feels distinctly different - in a good way.

The M9 impresses with precise imaging, lush mids & pleasant timbre, but the lethargic bass disappoints. These tradeoffs mean the Z1R excels on tracks light on mids (e.g., electronic music, female vocals), while the M9 makes a better allrounder. Personally, I would like to see Sony replace the BA in the Z1R with another well-tuned DD for fuller mids & smoother coherency, a true EX1000 successor of sorts, with improved ergonomics as a bonus.

These IEMS hit all the right spots for me. They have top notch technical capabilities in separation, layering, and resolution, audio reproduction with natural timbre, and a warm-neutral sound signature.
