Someone was kind enough to lend me their Sony IER-M9 for a couple days!. For some context, the IER-Z1R is one of my favorite IEMs; Sony struck gold with whatever they did to achieve such coherency in a hybrid. And in a similar vein, Sony's really done something special with the M9's timbre. Coming off the VE8, it feels distinctly different - in a good way

I just looked up the price. Damn, that's A LOT for Sony earphones. At the same time, quality must me amazing for the price.

It’s a shame the Sony IER-M9 is often overlooked for its brother the IER-Z1R...

 I don't feel any excitement in the music from these. But the comfort is so good i might just keep these to wear all day. All my impressions are from se! Not balanced. Maybe the balanced makes these better

 But anyways coming from my current set up the m9s come up short. Sound : They lack the resolution of the 800s and the emotion of the Anandas. Comfort: These are a 9/10 very light and you barely notice them. You are able to wear them for hours without fatigue

 isolation: These block out 90% of outside noise in a normal environment.  In the sound department I'm left wanting more. I don't feel any excitement in the music from these. But the comfort is so good i might just keep these to wear all day

Ages ago when I was new to the hobby, I tried the HD800S and the MDR-Z1R at a local audio store and walked away feeling absolutely impressed by the 800S. The Z1R on an A-B session stood no chance against the 800S, it felt muffled and bloated in the bass. Reading online reviews about the MDR-Z1R also further cemented my decision to go with the 800S. As such, I vowed from that day to never touch the Z1R again.

Oh boy was I wrong.

In these few months, I bought the IER-M9 and the IER-Z1R. Both IEMs are so fantastic that I decided to keep them for different listening moods. The one thing I learnt having owned Sony IEMs (N3, M9, Z1R) is that their build quality is seriously second to none. Anyway, I wanted to venture into high end closed back headphones, and wanted something that would definitely last. Also, I felt that I needed some variety in the character of my headphones, therefore I just pulled the trigger on the MDR-Z1R and prayed for the best (and also because there was a good return policy). 

Oh boy was I blown away.

I slept on the MDR-Z1R so hard because it was not as bright as the 800S. They don’t sweep you off your feet at first, but these headphones are definitely up there with the best. Despite being closed backs, they retain a wide soundstage and have great detail retrieval (though not to the extent of the 800S). Sonically, they are warm sounding, with the best bass reproduction on any headphone I have ever tried. Punchy and detailed, yet controlled and refined. It is a Sony characteristic after all. The mids are thick and feel full while the highs are sparkly enough without being fatiguing. Add these all together, and you get one of the most engaging headphone ever built. I definitely regretted sleeping on these, but I have finally found something to contrast my 800S. 

Quick Comparison with HD800S:

For soundstage, the 800S feels like a concert hall, while the Z1R feels like you’re listening in a music room (backstage kinda vibe). Both are enjoyable to have, but depends on the track you listen to.

Genre wise, if I want something that feels grand like classical, with the music commanding me to listen attentively, the 800S is the way to go. But when I just want to sit back and chill, having the music warmly envelope me, then it’ll be the MDR-Z1R.

The main takeaway is, take the online bashing on the MDR-Z1R (or any headphones, really) with a pinch of salt, and audition them yourselves to see if you like them. While pulling the trigger on the MDR-Z1R so abruptly was not the best action I should have taken, it allowed me to relearn something so simple in the hobby - trust only your own ears.

MDR-Z1Rs are like a cult film. They're lauded by critics because of its frequency response and how it presents music inaccurately (which I can say is partially true, especially compared to the M9) but if you look at what users say about owning them you'll see it's one of the top most used headphones out of their collection. 

I've had the Z1R for a year and half now and I've put a *lot* of miles on them. I'm already on my 2nd set of earpads (Dekoni Elite sheepskin) and I've been enjoying them all this time. The build quality is still superb. No creaks or rattles.

What an enviable collection!

I am very fond of my lowly XBA-N3, lovely tone and very tightly controlled bass. The build is very impressive and it isn't an expensive earphone. I buy what interests me and try not to get caught up in hype and popular opinion.

“HD800S is my endgame...” The MDR-Z1R proves that wrong.

  These also provide good isolation, having used them on flights (yes, you can't really experience 'audiophile' quality music on a plane, but from experience, they're definitely still significantly better than the Sony WH-1000XM4s and Bose NC700s).  For reference, I own the IER-M9s and the Focal Clears (a pair of over-the-ear headphones), and I use them for about ~20h and ~40h a week, respectively, switching to the M9s during the evenings when I typically prefer a warmer sound signature or when I wish to read in bed. These are the priciest personal audio devices I have ever owned (but not the priciest that I have tried), and I have no regrets for either of them. I should point out that I am not too concerned with large soundstages in my devices as I have used IEMs and headphones with larger soundstages in the past and found that I was not impressed with what they did to my music with the exception of orchestral pieces

The M9s also produce a palpable and pleasant rumbling in the sub-bass frequencies (with no strange balanced armature flavoring that I can discern), though they are not considered bass-heavy when compared to other top of the line IEMs.  NB: Some readers may not consider the IER-M9s "top of the line"

These IEMS hit all the right spots for me. They have top notch technical capabilities in separation, layering, and resolution, audio reproduction with natural timbre, and a warm-neutral sound signature. Together, these allow the IER-M9s to produce a supremely enjoyable and exquisite listening experience across all genres.  Concerning comfort, the preformed ear-hangers and the provided different sized ear-tips keep the IEMs stably perched in my ears with no difficulties

The connection between the cable and the IEM body can swivel, so there should be no issues with awkwardness of positioning of the IEMs. I have found it easy to quickly put on the IEMs and get a good seal (common advice is to pull the lobes of the ears backwards and upwards slightly)

  An interruption-free listening session is best, because putting these on just right takes time. They're not like ordinary earbuds, which can be pushed in and pulled out quickly.  The cables are of just the right length, and they don't tangle.  The storage solution is overdesigned, requiring you to coil the cable around your fingers, squeeze the plastic holder, slip in the coiled cable, push in the monitors, and slide them down into the keyhole positions

Hearing my favorite songs through these "in-ear monitors" is a revelation for someone like me, accustomed to good but still mass-market headphones (price range: several hundred dollars).  I hear instrumental details that I never discerned in 35 years of listening to some songs, first on vinyl or tape, and now in a CD-quality lossless format, with a variety of amplifiers and headphones. This is to say that I know the music well and find new pleasure in listening to it with these monitors.  When you get the sizes right, the ear tips block most outside noise, making these monitors suitable for use even in public environments

Okay, enough shilling, let's talk about the Monarch. So this earphone has got to be frankly just kind of one of the most extra earphones I've ever tried in a handful of different ways. So for one, it's not cheap, it's a $720 IEM, but if you've been seeing my recent reviews, I guess $700 is frankly not that nuts

 I think if you look outside of the midrange, or sorry, the sub bass parts of the frequency response, these are tuned fairly similarly, although there are some differences in the presentation. I would say that the treble on the S8, in my opinion, is clearly more detailed and just like airier and more forward than the treble on the Monarch. Not that the Monarch does treble poorly. I think I had some pretty good things to say about the treble here

 The S8 just, I don't know how it does the sort of forward presentation of the treble without ever being harsh and just kind of like this effortlessness to it. Whereas in comparison, the Monarch might feel a little bit rounded in the details. Obviously, though, that big difference is going to be in that bass. If you want a lot of sub bass, well, the Monarch is definitely going to do that for you, but I don't find the sub bass on the S8 lacking

 So yeah, there's that. And then the other big difference, and again, this is going to be a fairly personal thing, but for me, the Moondrop S8 just fits so much better. But yeah, that is probably going to be my review of the FIAT Audio Monarch. So out of five stars, I gotta be honest, I'm struggling with this one, but out of five stars, I'm going to go ahead and give the FIAT Audio Monarch three stars

 So this earphone has got to be frankly just kind of one of the most extra earphones I've

 For $720 though, what you get is actually nine drivers in each earphone, and they come

 in not just two styles, it's not just a hybrid, this is a tri-brid IEM.

 There are three different types of drivers inside the Monarch, including you get a dynamic

 driver for your bass, you get six balanced armatures for ostensibly the mid-range, and

 then they've also got a couple of EST tweeters, so electrics or electrostatic tweeters inside

 here, which I think is kind of interesting.
