Not sure if this helps but I was able to pick up a 5D Mark IV with less than 40k actuations for $1500 off FB marketplace. I'd say you should be able to pickup a decent Mark III for under 1k.

I know it's not exactly $500 but I have been having a lot of fun learning photography with my Olympus OM-D E-M10 MKIV. It's $700 with the kit lens, very portable, user friendly and comfortable to hold!

Got this camera mainly for travel. It's definitely a downgrade from the mark ii version of the camera but I wanted 4k video. The additional focusing points is an added bonus. Not as good as the Panasonic bodies (due to their implementation of DFD).

The used market in this system is huge, very rarely did I purchase new. If you have access to a used market with good buyer protection, buying used will save you a lot of money (this is true of any camera gear). Olympus have arguably the best in body image stabilisation in the business, they also have some of the best weather sealing getting around. A really great system for landscape photography.

Fast and accurate auto focus. 3. Good video features (4k would be nice and future proof, not sure if I need right now. A half decent onboard mic is also nice for when I don't want to use an external mic).

I have been leaving my Nikon D7000 at home and using this camera because it is so light and easy to use. It takes great pictures and lets you have full control or automatic, whatever suits your needs. I use both the 14-42 EZ and the 14-40 2.8 pro.
