Nikon Prostaff 7S

Up around the $200 mark is where you see Nikon Prostaff 7s and those are the premium mid-level roof binoculars, or in porros for example, Nikon Action Extreme. For $110-150 I'd recommend getting something good around 8-10x and then looking for something second-hand that is longer like a 14-16x for astronomy, if you get the desire to see deeper. I often recommend the Bushnell Legacy 10x50 at the lower end of that as it's said to outperform the cheaper Nikon Aculon but more than that and you are somewhat better off spending closer to the $200 mark to see a remarkable improvement in the quality or a good roof binocular.

A narrow field of view is more comfortable for some people, so even if you don't wear glasses, the extra eye-relief is more comfortable. In all likelihood you won't see to the edge of the field of view on the other binoculars without folding the eyecups down at least half-way. Closer to $200 you can get the Nikon Prostaff 7s (the 5's are not phase-corrected) roof binoculars which may be more compact and lightweight than the Porros, with the field of view being a bit more narrow, but the eye-relief is good on these too.

The actual binoculars are 5+ stars, but the cup plugs, eyepiece cover and strap do not reflect the quality of the optics. I will look to see if any better add ons are available for these. I have Nikon ProStaff 7s 8×42, and I can swear by them. Excellent optics for their price, full weather- and water-proof, nitrogen-purged, and fully covered in soft and really grippy rubber, don't slip even in cold and when wet.

The lens cap on the Prostaff sucks and it doesn't have a tripod hole. It looks like the Vortex one have the floppy lens caps and a tripod hole. I like the floppy lens caps, I glued some magnets into my Monarch's floppy lens caps so they don't actually flop. The Prostaff ones are hard plastic that are supposed to attach to the neck strap, which is very very very annoying to use.

I used some Nikon 8x30 Prostaff 7s the other day. I thought they were pretty good considering they are not very expensive and they are one of the smaller 8x30’s I’ve seen.
