I'm an avid outdoorsman and have been wanting to get into bird watching, hunting, and just general exploring/tracking of animals. I have never had a good set of binos but have had a couple of \~$30 ones. My dad knew I was looking to get a good pair and he did a bunch of research which landed him on the Monarch 5.

 That way there is no weight put on my neck! Walking with these light bino's is a true pleasure! Lightweight is the way to go; especially if you walk long distances while using them or have neck or upper back problems. 8. The price was great and you really get your money's worth! I have a friend who bought binoculars well over a thousand dollars that are heavy and as I can personally tell, are no better visually or for seeing precise colors than these Monarch 5 binoculars! I bought the 8 x 42's which are better for my eyes and the type of wildlife watching that I like to do! 9. If you watch only things up-close like butterflies, moths, dragonflies or flowers, get a pair of bino's that have a 5 to 6 feet close focus distance

 The case is nice! I don't use the neck strap though as I had neck surgery a few years ago. I bought the ones that go around your shoulders and back. That way there is no weight put on my neck! Walking with these light bino's is a true pleasure! Lightweight is the way to go; especially if you walk long distances while using them or have neck or upper back problems. 8

 It's a personal thing for me about the 8.2 ft close focus distance. Caps are a minor, physical problem with the binocular accessories! Bino's themselves are worth every penny!

 Viewing the Orion region with either binocular is an inspiring experience, but more so with the Bushnell’s larger FOV. Image brightness of the Nikon and the Bushnell, as judged by the ability to see faint stars in the Orion region, is the same. Unless the Nikon name, lower weight, compactness and close focus are over-riding considerations, the Bushnell, at 30% of the prize of the Nikon, is the much better deal.

 This is very good. The Bushnell FOV is 8.2 degree (65 degree apparent FOV) is considerable larger than that of the Nikon, but the sharpness falls off outside of a 5 degree diameter (64%). When wearing glasses the usable FOV of the Bushnell and the Nikon is the almost the same due to the better eye relief of the Nikon

 The image quality of the Nikon and the Bushnell based on stars is similar and excellent, but the response to making focus adjustments with the Bushnell is not as crisp as with the Nikon.  The much larger separation of the objective lenses of the Bushnell (due to the poro prism design) make for much more 3D viewing of landscapes than with the Nikon (roof prism design). The Nikon and the Bushnell both have a ¼-20 threads to attach to a tripod, but the wider separation of the objective lenses make the attachment to a tripod easier for the Bushnell. The protective eyepiece caps of the Bushnell fit just right, while those of the Nikon are too big and tend to fall off too easily

What are the cheapest Nikon binoculars available with ED glass and phase coating?

 Nice strain-relief neck strap, and padded nylon case. The individual objective covers are just about perfect, as they are attached to each objective and they stay on when properly seated. The eyepiece cover, a singular piece, is less secure, and you can knock it off quite easily-at least you can secure it to the neck strap to prevent dropping them.  Overall a very nice 'mid-priced' pair of 'nocs

  The 'nocs do perform as a quality piece of optical equipment however. Overall they feel solid and all moving parts have a quality precision feel. The image is bright, with true colors and can be focused tack sharp using the diopter and focus rings (which are nicely dampened to allow for precise movement).  The accessories that come with the glasses are also top quality

 I'm assuming that's how binoculars work, as I have nothing to compare them to! I can't imagine just whipping these up and having it angled just right in the blink of an eye though. Maybe with practice and muscle memory.  That being said, I'm pleased with the quality of the optics. I picked these up for birding and whatever else may come my way

For birding I think 8x42 would be better, but I went with 10x42 because it's still decent for birding while also being good for other situations

They're not binoculars, they're Nikons!

I recently purchased Nikon Monarch HG binoculars. Other Nikon products I've purchased in the past made me comfortable buying again, but the reasons I went for the HGs are because they are made in Japan and have field flatteners.

What are you guys using for birding?

 When I removed the outer rubber ring I discovered that a tiny screw in the hard plastic eye cup had dislodged & was sort of jammed sideways, damaging the hard plastic. Unfortunately, when I removed the rubber part, the tiny screw (which I didn't know existed until that moment) fell out onto the ground & was lost. Now that eye piece spins loosely & won't hold the setting at all. I'm going too see if I can send the binoculars to Nikon for repair under warranty

I bought these binoculars to use at a hawkwatch site last fall. They're a good size for me, not too heavy, easy to focus, good balance of distance & field of view. And Nikon optics, all excellent. I was especially looking for binoculars with eye cups that can be positioned for use with eyeglasses
