Upgrading from Viewsonic 1080P to a 4K ("fake 4K" is fine)

Since nobody else is going to say it, I think you would be doing a disservice to yourself if you don't consider the LG HU70LAB (or the white cabinet HU70LA). LED DLP projectors have some distinct advantages since the LEDs can be modulated from 0% to 100% in brightness individually for better contrast and color saturation. They can do this on a frame-by-frame basis that NO metal halide lamp can dream of... and trying to get a mechanical modulated aperture to hit those speeds it yet.

Projector purchase advice

I’d recommend the LG hu70la it’s a LED 4k projector plug and play with 25-30k hours lifespans, it also has smart tv features if you’re into that but it’s slightly above you’re listed budget. I also recommend Epson’s 3200 which is slightly cheaper then the budget you have saving some room for audio, I know a lot of folks don’t like Epson because of their significantly shorter life span but I’d say 5 years for a replacement is the norm for most casual customers especially when it comes to technology.

Anyone Upgrade From th2050a?

IMHO, the market is not quite there yet. I’ve looked at the new LGs - the HU70la and HU810p, due to light source, color reproduction and the desire to upgrade to 4k. My read on the market is that the moment we get native 4k dlp chips, we’ll see a true step up in capabilities. Right now all 4k projectors are coming in at a high markup and with compromises (lag, contrast, color output) that make taking the hit still unpalatable.
