I don't have crazy skill but want to get an accoustic. I feel like a cheat when I see people here playing so much better on cheap-ass digital ones. Sometimes think I should rather donate the money and keep my digital. Any advice/perspective?
Personally, I spent far more than I needed to on my digital piano when I upgraded from a Casio Privia PX-160 to a Kawai CA99. I'd be perfectly fine playing on the Privia today...but I don't regret buying my Kawai for a moment. In my case, I don't really want to deal with the maintenance and other costs that would come with an acoustic, and I like having the option of playing late at night without concern about disturbing my neighbors, so I prefer a good digital.

Just starting out in my 40s, where to begin
As a beginner that currently plays on a high end digital piano, I will say that I prefer the sound of my Kawai CA99 over that of the mediocre acoustics that I've played on. I would strongly encourage you to pay a visit to your local piano dealer.

Best digital piano that could substitute a real piano?
On a more reasonable high end instrument budget, I absolutely love my Kawai CA99: you'd only be spending around $5500 for it. Great action for a digital piano, and amazing sound because of the soundboard focused design.

It's just brilliant and because it puts things in nice, easy sections, it is another, even a section on there where it says recommended or pop or classic sounds or recently played, so it gets used to the sounds that you're picking, so you can easily pick them again. I think it's absolutely brilliant [ Music ]. This is good, so that's the ca-99 there's lots of other things as well

Pedals too high
Also, I think the pedal on the CA99 is rather stiff (if it is at all similar to the CA97, which I think it is). Maybe try playing in shoes/slippers (if you currently play with socks/bare feet - but if slippers, chose some with a rather hard, not too flexible sole).
