I replaced it with the Garmin inReach that uses a similar map interface but can also send SMS. I would still take my etrex with me as a backup if I still had it. If the price was fairly low I would say you got a good deal.

Less than a week later, I was on a hike in an area with no cell service with my (large and aging) dog and he hurt his leg at the bottom of a very steep descent. Tried a few things to get him up (including using a dog sling that another hiker happened to have), but there was no way he was going to be able to hike back. Used the SOS on the Garmin and a ranger was there within the hour to help me get my guy off the trail. 110% worth it.

I've been using my mini for almost three years. It's great to have for peace of mind in case I need to send an SOS, but most of the features are unusable due to a combination of poor battery life when used for tracking and the extremely poor GPS signal strength. Get used to seeing the 'Wait for GPS'...

Several others have touched on these points already but get a PLB (like a Garmin InReach). Cell signal is unreliable, especially in backcountry areas, and GPS apps on your phone can only tell you where you are and they suck batteries dry something fierce. You can’t call for help or text a friend to let them know your progress without a cell signal. But you’ll always have a line of communication open if you have a satellite device.
