Tried a few things to get him up (including using a dog sling that another hiker happened to have), but there was no way he was going to be able to hike back. * Apps: The Garmin Connect app is the primary app, it's fine not great, there's other third party apps that integrate as well but I haven't investigated much. The desktop browser version of Garmin Connect is also fine, not great, but has some more functionality. Garmin Explore is the other phone app, it's really clunky but necessary for mapping functionality, including adding GPS tracks to the watch to follow, it gets the job done but not in a friendly way. I've read the issues are related to integrating legacy software and devices from past corporate mergers

As far as battery life, I was able to keep it going for 6 days if I just used it to send 3 to 5 messages letting my wife know I was starting, I was OK and checking in, and I was stopping for the night. Everytime you turn it on, it takes several minutes to acquire satellites and can take up to 30 minutes to send a message. When I use it to send messages and do occasional tracking and location reporting, it lasts maybe two 8 hour days.

Battery life: with one check in the system completely died the first day of use. It was fully charged and as stated it is suppose to last for 14 days with 10 minute pings. Unfortunately, it did not. 😪

But Garmin misses the mark when it comes to ease of use, data management, software (online & phone apps), etc. It would be "perfect" if just a little more thought and effort were invested in the design of some of its most basic features.
