If you don't need the latest continuous autofocus and video performance, feel free to look at the X-T20 for ~$400 too. It takes photos just as "modern". You can certainly choose to start with prime lenses if you know that's what you want. Obviously, the XC 35mm f/2 for $199 in the U.S. is the best value and is also the equivalent of a normal lens.

The X-T20 fits in as an excellent choice for the right photographer—someone who values the way it feels in the hand and its lens system.

The X-T20 has the best viewfinder, best ergonomics, and best image quality in its price class.

If you can find the camera bundled with the XF 18-55mm lens, that's a steal right there, because you mentioned compactness and that lens is the jack of all trades, has optical image stabilization (big deal for a camera without IBIS) and is a compact one too; There are more compact prime lenses (non-zoom ones), if you want to go that way, but they are not optically stabilized. Another thing worth noting is that the X-T30 is considerably more compact than the X-T3 and it has the same X-Trans 26MP sensor as the X-T3. So, in a sense, you are getting the same image quality, but with some feature limitations - be sure and do your homework around that before you buy, to be sure you don't regret missing anything after the fact, but I'd say if the features on the X-T30 are good enough for you, then you'll love the compactness - by the way, you can't go wrong with the X-T20 either.
