Overall, with the Plumes, I'm just hearing a lot more headroom and clarity compared to that classic screamer circuit.

Here’s another vote for the TC Ditto for the looper. Check out the Earthquaker Devices Plumes and the JHS 3 series overdrive. Both are made in the US by smaller companies that consistently put out quality products.
