Good 7-8 inches ereader (maybe android) with a good interface?

I would look into the Boox Nova 2/3 (no SD card support, but you can connect to cloud services, and has OTG support) and is probably the most well-rounded, and up-to-date open android ereader. I have the Boox Nova3 and just tend to use neoreader, Libby, and kindle on it as reading apps and they work great. Others use Moon+ on here and sounds like they have a positive experience.

It's ok, but be aware

This e-reader is fine for what it is, but I can't say I would recommend it. It costs significantly more than it should, and it is very clearly "hacked" together. Adding Google Play is clearly circumventing Google's intended security protocols, and should never be done with a real Google account unle...

Is it irrational to want to avoid Kindle just because Amazon irritates me?

I don't think so. I havea Kindle Paperwhite and still replaced it with a Boox Nova 2 in order to get access to the more common EPUB format (and others) and to get out of Amazon's ecosystem, or at least not be exclusively locked into it. I still buy books at Amazon, but now I have other options as well.
