The best consumer brand out there is ASUS. Their home routers are stable, and have the best stock firmware of them all, which can cover even advanced users. They breathed new life into their previous flagship AC86u and popular AC68u lines with AiMesh - a software bonus they certainly didn't have to do - for free.

The AX88u will be handle anything you throw at it but if your on a budget the RT-AC68U is a decent router at a good price. You can also flash both of these routers with Asus Merlin to get more features and it’s pretty easy to do.

Which Asus AX router would you recommend?

It usually retails for 170€. or more, but you will just set it and forget it. It will easily fulfill the needs you listed, run for years, and openvpn speeds will reach >200mbps while simultaneously serving multiple clients without hiccups. On the AX68U and the more expensive AX86U are community darlings.
