Asus RT-AC68U Review

The best consumer brand out there is ASUS. Their home routers are stable, and have the best stock firmware of them all, which can cover even advanced users. They breathed new life into their previous flagship AC86u and popular AC68u lines with AiMesh - a software bonus they certainly didn't have to do - for free.

I'm so sick of tired of my Asus router giving me the dick just whenever because it'll randomly sperg out with "Your ISP's DHCP does not function properly" every fucking week. I've tried checking online and I notice this was really common with this brand. But I just wanted to confirm my studies by asking here if it REALLY is that common because holy fuck that's annoying.

Does all Asus Routers have the DHCP issue?

 I have this thing in the basement at the back corner. I live in a townhouse and when I go upstairs kitty corner, unfortunately, the range doesn't quite reach, but the range on this thing is definitely standard compared to other units of the same price. I'm very pleased with this. The local transfer on this is just as fast as the Wi-Fi 6 AX and once again, this is Wi-Fi 5 AC, so the fact that it's keeping up is beautiful

 So it wants you to put the name of your new wireless up here. And then it wants you to make a password. Now this took me a little bit. Now the thing is you have to have a relatively long name

 So here's a bit of a head scratcher. If I hardwire in my Xbox One, it's slower and more laggy than it is if I use this new router, or any new router. So this switch is hooked up to the modem, which is upstairs, and once again the Xbox and the router are both hooked into the same unit, so I don't know why Wi-Fi is actually better than hardwire in this case, and I've actually tested the cable, the cable is fine. Unfortunately when I go through the router wirelessly, I get a strict NAT type, and a double NAT type, so hopefully when I go through the settings, I'll be able to find a way to get around that

I don't really know how this works as a router, but I can tell you it's a complete waste of money if you plan to use its AiMesh feature to extend wireless coverage in your house, unless you plan to run an Ethernet cable from the Router to the Node.  The TL:DR is that you get WORSE connectivity, even when in range of the Router; and it doesn't really improve connectivity on the poorly-covered spots.  Asus Networking Support confirmed that it needs to be "within 3 to 5 meters" (which is ridiculous) but even so, I doubt it's any good.  Look at the attached pictures to get a sense (this is, incidentally what I also sent to Asus Tech Support - of course the drones there completely ignored all I said -- their canned response further below):  First, understand that in an AiMesh there is one Router (what you connect to your cable modem, or whatever: the WAN part) and one or more Node(s) (which connect to the Router and should theoretically extend the coverage):  Setting it up and connecting to it went all very smoothly, no problem at all - I also updated the firmware to the latest version

Houses with dense materials like plaster, lath, or chicken wire in the walls are particularly hard for WiFi waves. Whenever possible, aim for direct line of sight between routers

AiMesh doesn't really work (wirelessly)

 Your internet usage pattern. It's nice Asus allows you to stop the information sharing under "Privacy" tab, but that also turns off the content filtering and protection features. Parental Control feature? Enable internet traffic data sharing with Trend Micro to use all the features. QoS (quality of service)? Again enable internet traffic data sharing with Trend Micro to use all these features

I am upgrading from the Asus AC-1200 wifi router. The AC68U advertisement says "Included Lifetime Internet Security" and "A protection powered by Trend Micro". These are the main features I want so I bought this router.  Big mistake

 To use these protection features and get "Lifetime Internet Security", you will need to agree to Trend Micro's service and software agreement. The agreement says you are required to share your internet traffic data with Trend Micro. What does that include? The websites you visit. The website your guest visits

Content Filtering and Protection? Look elsewhere unless you don't value your privacy.

 All 3 tested at 35-50Mbps. Needless to say, when I contacted Amazon, I arranged to return the device and this time, I got a refund. I'll likely find an ASUS router (instead of an access point) that will act in Mesh mode to accomplish my goal. EDIT - Turns out the ethernet cable I was using and an intermittent fault and that played a part in the speed I was getting using an ethernet backhaul

 The router provides speed in the 120-150 Mbps range on the far side of the house (the house is 1800 sq ft), it's pretty much double that near the router. I bought the RP-AC1900 to bring those speeds away from the router back in line with it. I installed the 1st one I received per the instructions, and the router set up the mesh system very quickly (and to make it work better, I used the ethernet in my house for backhaul). However, when I'd speed test, I was only getting 35-50 Mbps by hitting the access point

 I got that today, and went through the same steps, with the same results. Then I changed ethernet cords and jacks to see if that was the issue. It was not. I tried speed testing with a laptop, an iPad & an iPhone (all on the 5ghz band to give me the best shot at speed)

Not as slow as I'd thought - Updated Review

 If you don't have to think about loading time or connection, that means you have a good router. Internet speed doesn't make the experience any better, as long as it's fast enough to keep from waiting. Anything more is overkill.

 The p doesn't seem to get along with the other hardware as the u does, or isn't getting the support it needs to bring out it's potential.  Bottom Line: If this router's performance, reliability, and consistency is anything like my older asus router, there shouldn't be any problems. Will update if anything happens. Bought the 2 year warranty also, so if something goes wrong, will give a review on how well it's serviced

 I have no idea why my Asus ROG laptop did that, but with my older asus router my laptop almost crashed from trying to update it also.  Back to the router: The 5GHz band is noticeably faster than my older dual band asus rt-n65r, which i had it for a few years. Tested it two rooms or two walls away about 40ft from the router, with a tv playing hulu plus while playing hd youtube videos on a ipad and iphone. Did great

Fast!

This is one fantastic router. It replaces my terrible TrendNet TEW-692GR using the exact same network configuration (2.4GHz network for the house and 5GHz network for a bridge to an outside workshop) and both my signal strength and throughput improved dramatically. I get 5 bars consistently throughout my house instead of the 2-3 bars I'd get furthest from the old router
