 Um And that's kind of it for this board there's really not that much else to cover here I mean you've got your you know, uh solid little four like yeah It's a solid four phase right like the thing is just because it's a four phase doesn't necessarily mean it's weak Because this four phase got 90 amps worth of power stages in each of its phases now doesn't work like that Does not work like that but you get the idea right like each of the phases here is really like compared to Say like a b450 four phase motherboard like each of the phases here can deliver like twice as much current as what a four phase as one phase on a on a b450 board could do so There's nothing really like I don't really see a massive issue with it and actually asus for the like what you will notice with asus boards and i'm not sure it's that i'll like i've not checked the competing z390 boards for this but um At the high end at least where you'll see the the whole asus doesn't like using a lot of phases is like well, you'll see the effect of that really well is just how many input filtering capacitors asus ends up using because Basically, you get a bunch more input ripple with lower phase counts and here they do have one bulk capacitor per phase but uh I think four is actually a pretty normal configuration though There might be other z390 boards that are on like three with you know, like six phase or 12 phase vrm configurations in this price range so that's something to that's something that i'm i will be you know checking but Yeah on the high end you basically see asus use a lot more bulk capacitors on the input to compensate for the low phase account um Anyway, that's it like solid little four phase T topology memory configuration single phase memory power, which is standard right? Like only the really high end boards go for two phase memory power Um rather interesting multilayer ceramic capacitor configuration right with the ones like this makes a lot more sense in my opinion than just jamming them All inside the cpu socket because the thing is you actually have v-core pins that are like in this area of the socket Or this area. I can't remember. It's been a while since i've looked at the socket diagram, but it's like this area you have a bunch of v-core pins, so Because the the connection is basically like they're that that would all be v-core connections And so you want some capacitors in the socket itself and you also want some You know on on the outer edge because then the pins that are on the outer edge of the socket get their own little set Of multilayer ceramics nearby as well So yeah, I can't wait to to to basically test this board because it's going to be interesting because honestly for like I was Kind of expecting a lot worse um and it's not actually Well, and it's actually no I didn't like the thing is I looked up the specs of the vrm ahead of time but i'm i'm interested to see how this actually performs because uh um Well, yeah, i'm just interested.  It works better, but on the Gene It's incredibly stupid. I have no idea why this waste of PCB space is on that motherboard Then above that we have a power switch, which is a nice little addition if you're testing your motherboard you know if you're just doing like a Pre-build test on just on top of the motherboard box or something like that So yeah, that's nice because you don't have to fiddle around with trying to short the the front panel header right To get the board to start so I'm actually like for for test bench use. This should favor a four by eight setup Um, or like a four by four um And I can test you know, I can i'm going to be testing two by eight four by eight two by sixteen Um, and we'll see which one of those works best for this motherboard Because I do believe they also use this memory configuration on some of the higher end boards So it's just a like i'm i'm interested to see how it does in terms of memory overclocking But it is a t topology. So I expect the highest frequencies with four by eight Um, because that's just what t topology tends to fail like that's what t topology configurations should favor um so Yeah, we'll see how that does

mobo PCB Breakdown: ASUS Prime Z390-A // Same VRM as Z390 Strix -F and -E

 Hey guys, Buildzoid here and so because I'm going to be doing a Z390 motherboard roundup

 I went ahead and picked up an open box Prime Z390A because my experience with Z390, well really LGA 1151

 1151 motherboards in general is rather limited like I've had one 4-dim ASRock board

 which sucks, that's the Z370 Xtreme 4, then I've had the Phantom Gaming ITX which is great

 but that's a 2-dimmer ITX board and well not really relevant to most people

 and similarly I've only had like the Maximus Alavin Gene when it comes to ASUS motherboards and

 me and the motherboard like I don't get along with that board, but you can't deny it's a very capable motherboard. It's just that

 it needs a little bit more convincing than what I'm willing, like it's a bit on the

 hard, like just whatever, I don't know where I was going with that

 Basically me and that motherboard don't get along very well, like it's capable. It's just that it's yeah

 Anyway, so I wanted to try out some some more boards so that have I have a better

 overview of how the different motherboards behave and so I picked up this open box Z390-A board

 So yeah, thank you patrons for funding the purchase of this motherboard

 Because the the reason why I picked up this motherboard, well, I want to probinate the board as well

 So yeah, just test some memory overclocking, maybe test VRM thermals, definitely want to run the probinator on it

 so I'm really interested to see how this VRM does so before we get into the

 GIMP seems to be freaking out, right? I'm gonna try to fix that

 Yeah, I do want to try it out with the probinator to see how the voltage regulation goes

 Let's talk about the various features that this board comes with and yes my my picture quality is higher than ever with this one

 Anyway, we've got some color-coded troubleshooting LEDs. So that's nice to see we've got a Memo-K switch

 My experience with this on the Maximus XI Gene is that this is the most stupid thing

 I've ever come run into on an Asus motherboard. Like do you hate posting at high memory overclocks?

 Yeah, have this turned on like so this is really like maybe on this board. It works better, but on the Gene

 It's incredibly stupid. I have no idea why this waste of PCB space is on that motherboard

 Then above that we have a power switch, which is a nice little addition if you're testing your motherboard

 Pre-build test on just on top of the motherboard box or something like that

 So yeah, that's nice because you don't have to fiddle around with trying to short the the front panel header

 To get the board to start so I'm actually like for for test bench use. This is kind of this is rather nice

 We've also got an over voltage jumper by the 8-pin. So

 We've also got an over voltage jumper by the 8-pin. So I will be checking how that behaves

 I assume it's basically just gonna like I'm gonna guess that the stock voltage restrictions are like 1.6 volts V core

 2 volts memory and if you move that jumper

 It's gonna give you like 2 volts V core 2.3 volts memory and just you know

 It's gonna push the the limits from already rather unsafe to extremely unsafe

 Because that's at least what the LN2 jumper does on the ROG motherboards where it's just like yeah

 Like before you turn on the LN2 jumper, you can already blow up your CPU

 But once you flick that LN2 jump once you change the LN2 jumper around you can blow up your your stuff even more so

 Anyway, the 8-pin power connector that we have here is the high current variant

 So this is good for 480 watts on an 18 gauge cabled power supply. If you're on a 16 gauge

 So this uses the and you can tell that this is the high current variant of the connector because it has these solid pins

 The other well this this this photo doesn't have enough pixels for it

 But normally you can tell because the folded pins which are 8.5 amps per pin pair

 They're basically like a little like they're basically just a strip of metal going into the board

 Whereas the the solid pins like well, they're square

 Well, you can literally see that they have a very square profile to them. So that's what tells you these are solid pins

 So that's the high current variant of the connector

 Anyway with that out of the way because there's really not much else to talk about on this board

 It's rather basic or at least not much else. I care about talking about on this board

 Let's talk about the VRM. So the VRM on this

 Like this is another reason why I chose this board this VRM is

 extremely similar to what you get on so many Asus motherboards, so

 Here's the vCore SoC split I mean that's vCore and it's IGPU not SoC

 Intel platform SoC is an AMD thing. So you've got your IGPU over here and then you've got your vCore. vCore is a four phase
