We've had xfinity internet at our house for at least a year, with no issues. I use an Arris Surfboard router with wifi, and it is on the xfinity approved devices list. Suddenly this past couple of weeks, the internet connection has been randomly dropping throughout the day. It isn't the wifi--our devices all still show strong wifi signals to the router--but the router itself has "no Internet connection."

Quick and easy answer: go to Amazon and pick whichever Arris Surfboard with DOCSIS 3.1 or higher that meets your budget.

We now have super fast speeds and Wi-Fi throughout the entire house. How? We bought an Arris Surfboard modem. It was over $300 because we wanted to get one that would last a while & we feel it was so worth it since we don’t have to deal with the frustration of paying $$$ for a service that didn’t work like it should & we don’t have to pay each month to rent the Xfinity modem.

I prefer buying your own modem if your parents are going to be with xfinity for a while because a) they’re renting that current device and they’ll be paying too much to get less than half the functionality (just the modem), b) buying a modem outright will have a set payoff period (any longer than the cost of a modem divided by the current device’s monthly rent and the modem has paid for itself), and c) I don’t want to deal with Comcast more than I absolutely have to. I believe the latest technology is DOCSIS 3.1, but if you/they want to go cheaper I can vouch for my DOCSIS 3.0 modem that does great with 200Mbps down / 6Mbps up service (although 3.0 is limited to 1Gbps down / 100Mbps up if that’s a concern for you). My Arris Surfboard has been solid for at least 5 years if you’re looking for a brand recommendation. I may upgrade to 400mbps, but probably won’t do one of the higher tier plans. The Arris Surfboard SB6183 looks like a cost-effective option ($55 currently). Others im considering are the Motorola MB7621 at $90, and the Netgear CM1100 at $110. Reliability is important, and a modem that will be supported by xfinity for at least the next 2 years.

I have been told that they refreshed things on their end and the problem is solved. However it's not as I continue to have the intermittent disconnects. I have checked and all inside connections are tight. Here is some screen shots of the status and log of my Arris surfboard sb6183 modem... ​.
