 That Pedal Show have done a really great in-depth review of this pedal against some other pedals that are similar to it. Anderton's TV have obviously done it, Pete and the Captain and Strymon themselves have done plenty of videos on all the cool features packed into Volante and I was like, how am I going to approach this? And I think most of you guys that follow me will know that I'm a huge fan of just getting to know a pedal on the spot in the video and just learning how to use it and playing and doing some cool stuff. Well with this I do have to know a little bit before showing you but also I thought rather than go through every tiny little nook and cranny of how it works and all the history and stuff like that, I would just show you how the pedal works generally, some of the cool secondary functions that it has and how you navigate it and then just play, just show you, just share with you that kind of like discovery of cool sounds that you can get from it. Anyway, Strymon Volante, it's a magnetic tape machine based on, well there's a couple of different types of delay in there but one of the main ones is the magnetic drum echo which is the Binson Echo Rec which is a, I guess it's a really sought after tape machine and what it is is a magnetic drum and the tape goes around it and it can create really interesting delays. It was such an old piece of gear that that's basically back in the day how they would create delays and then it's got tape delay on there as well so you've got like what I'd suppose like an echo plex type of thing

 It's so intuitive. It's inspiring It's the secondary functions all the different sounds you can create incredible like just hats off I'm I might be biased because I'm a huge Strymon fan and I always use their stuff But like honestly that is one of the most impressive delay pedals I've ever come across and I cannot say enough good things about it You know as I'm sure you can imagine that's what it's like So I urge you if you're a tinkerer and you like get involved with cool sounds or you want that kind of dreamy delay Or you just want something inspiring to support what you do Absolutely get a Strymon Volante like absolutely I'm kind of lost for words because I just feel so good about this pedal and I'm so Inspired by it and I cannot wait to create some music with it You know, you'll know whenever I release some music next and if it's on there because you just be able to tell I'll probably put it all over the place Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this video.  They've also chosen to forgo a time knob altogether in favor of the tap tempo foot switch and as well as that there are a couple of other momentary functions as well as a secret delay mode but we'll go into those in a little bit more detail later as well. The pedal is entirely digital with mono input and output as well as the option for an external tap tempo, the maximum delay time is a thousand milliseconds, it has buffered bypass and soft switching and it can be run with trails or no trails with the trails coming on as default. Okay so let's now take a closer look at each of the RP-87's individual delay modes. As always I'm just going to be playing straight into the front of my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe on clean with everything being captured by a Shure SM57 microphone with no additional post eq-ing and for any additional pedals that I might use I'll make a note on screen

 So first up we have the digital delay setting which is known for its sharper crystal clear repeats as it's just an exact copy of your tone your signal and everything you just played being played back to you. In this mode the X knob controls the level of modulation on the repeats and this is something the RP-87 does really well because it gives you that lush shiny tone that you're after without it ever sounding too synthetic and something interesting that we can do is dampen the repeats. Digital delay can sound quite brittle in certain circumstances but with the control over the dampening filter we can either brighten or darken the tone of the repeats which gives you a level of control that conventional digital delay units might not. Digital delay is best used for rhythmic and repetitive licks the perfect example being literally anything from U2 as the Edge is famous for his incredibly dynamic use of the effect but it also works really well behind chordal sweeps with some swirling modulation

 The Walrus RP-87 is the delay pedal that I bought to unlock the effect back when I first started doing research into pedals and effects and at the time I never really used delay all that much but I knew how important it could be and how much it could bring to your playing. So today I wanted to share what I've learned from my time with the pedal, take a closer look at the pedal itself and each of its four delay modes and how you can best use them in your own playing. If you're looking for anything specific you can check the timestamps below but apart from that let's just jump into a brief rundown of the pedal. The RP-87 was designed to be a versatile delay pedal which while giving you some degree of freedom remains compact and not overwhelming in its options

 And then, of course, we've got the program knob, which we've already spoken about. So this clean sound, I'm using an Albert Lee SSS, all stock, and it's running through to a Vase Tone Setter 18. It sounds like this. Let us first start off in the digital setting, so switching the pedal on

 So if I shift it all clockwise, and then shift it counterclockwise, and then we've got slapback setting, whose rate or delay time you can control with the ratio knob. You'll notice I've got most of the modulation wanned out there. If I wind it in, we're going to get a nice, beautiful chorus sound. The bypass switch has a momentary function as well, and if you hold it down, it'll ramp up the modulation, like so, as will the tap tempo knob

 Then we've got the analog setting, again, lovely and soft. The low-fire setting adds the bandpass filter, which you can control with this X knob. So if I shift it all clockwise, and then shift it counterclockwise, and then we've got slapback setting, whose rate or delay time you can control with the ratio knob. You'll notice I've got most of the modulation wanned out there

 So you can get just above unity level with your delay setting if you turn it all the way up. I'll leave it at about half. The dampen control is very important. I'll leave it at about half way to make it a little soft

 Let's check it out. Let's check it out. You can get pretty warbly there in the modulation. The tap tempo switch also has a hold function

 The X knob which has a different function depending on which program you're on. For digital, analog and slap programs, the X knob controls the modulation depth. And then for the lo-fi program, it controls the width of the filter. So you can kind of get super murky stuff all the way to AM radio sounding stuff as well

 Lo-fi has a cool, has a really cool character kind of degraded property to the repeats and then get cool slapback tones with the slap program. We've got a ratio knob controlling quarter note, dotted eighth, eighth note or eighth note triplet. We've got a level knob, a dampen knob which is kind of like an overall tone for the repeats, counterclockwise is going to darken things up and vice versa the other way. And then we have a repeats knob, got tap tempo function, always useful

 It works for me. Does it build up? No I said it's subtle. It's not for tricky delay stuff. It's for subtle delays

 So that kind of sets it apart from the competition a bit. And the fact that you can't really mess up. You can't never have the delay is never louder than your guitar. There's never so much regeneration that it freaks out, which is nice because few of us need that

 Hey folks and pedal people and Walrus aficionados, I'm here with the ARP 87 from the Walrus audio the people from the United States it's a multimode delay and if Leslie throws it over there we can look at it that is the graphics are always insane so anyway we go into the functionality of the knobs bypass if you hold in bypass it will ramp up the X parameter we'll get into X parameter in a bit if you hold in tap it will ramp up repeats kind of need some extra functions for life craziness then we have a ratio which is subdivisions for the tap so we have quarter we have dotted eighth we have eighth notes and triplets level what I can't do it level if I have to look at the delay I'm sorry level never gets insanely crazy this is for more subtleness not for mega insane crazy stuff so with everything all the way up it's still not an insane delay which is nice a little subtle dampen will make you delay dollar here it should be here should be undamped and repeats is your feedback now let's see show I don't know the pedal back cam there we can see the pedal back beautiful we have so many cameras we have top mounted ins and outs and a power input needs a hundred milliamp but not more which is great says a hundred milliamp minimum which should work with a hundred I'm giving it 500 now but who cares so a hundred should work and there's a input here for external tap so that's pretty much it then we have on the top the mode switch we have digital analog a low fi or filtered delay and a slap back the only issue I'm having so far is actually getting it to the speed I want because as you can clearly see there is no speed or time knob so everything needs to be tapped which technically is preferable over only a time knob and no tap we're gonna see so this is the fender what's that American professional telecaster I'm really happy that I made made up with fender and we're friends now because they have good stuff to offer this in five guitars and all five guitars are pretty damn good you know so whatever happened in the past between us I'm pretty happy that it's in the past because this is a really freaking solid guitar so if I now need to tell you I can use that of course I can use the others I have which I will but sometimes a good straightforward no frills tally sound is what this gives me and that's what we what I want here I'm going into the Böckner Lindhurst compressor into the rev 740 which is behind me and let's see if we can show that Leslie's on it look making the pedal small wow awesome so yeah they are the ref 740 um and that's the clean sound right here of course going into the torpedo studio turning it on on digital it's a nice sound X in this case does that's the name of my dog by the way it does modulation here's the thing it pretty much does modulation on all settings except on the lo-fi mode where it does the filter widths which why did it eat I can't say with so you can remember it easily its modulation except on filter or lo-fi so no modulation now we have the delay just as loud as the original but you can never have only dry so let's see dotted eighth I'll dampen that a bit. I'll dampen that a lot. That was major all of a sudden, woo! So yeah, that works beautifully and if we go here and get some modulation in it, let's do something F E. Just a digital layer and it works

Walrus Audio ARP-87 Multimode Delay - Review

 All right. So as you can see, I've got a camera set up on the ARP87 so we can see it in close detail. From left to right and top to bottom, we've got level, dampen, repeats, ratio, X and program. So level obviously controls the amount of the delay

 It's got built-in modulation, a modulation knob that you can affect these delays with. Of course you've got your level, your feedback and your timing, but also you've got a specific subdivision control. So you can move between different subdivisions of time to create some really interesting rhythms. And then of course you've got your repeats

 And then what I'm going to do is I'm going to go ahead and use some reverb provided by the UAD RMX16 reverb. And I'm also running into my Kraken, straight into my Two Notes Torpedo Studio, running some new IRs, which I can't talk about yet, but I will. And I'm going to be using my new Chapman ML3 beer model. And this is what I've been using on tour

 And with that modulation on top it's really musical, really really musical, I'm really really impressed with this pedal. The R87 is definitely an awesome versatile delay as far as I can tell. Okay, so now we've seen a close-up of the pedal and we've gone through all the different delay algorithms to give you an idea of how good the pedal sounds by itself. Now I've got the RMX 16 reverb in, here's a quick demonstration
