 I remember seeing this bass at NAMM and my jaw dropped because the finish is absolutely insane. Then to compliment that, you have a clear pickguard as well as black hardware, and this is driven by Music Man's own bridge and different hardware too, and I have to say they hold up really well, especially the tuning is actually extremely stable, and it works very well. For the pickup, you have Sterling's own H1 Alnico humbucker, and this you can get a lot of really thick, very punchy, just really rich sounds with it that's going to have that classic Music Man growl to it, and then that combined with their three band active preamp really leads to a lot of different ways you can sculpt your tone, and really especially you get that really great Music Man growl when you add the mids just a little more on top of it, and what's great is it sounds like a Music Man. It sounds like its older, more expensive USA made stingray, and there's a lot of just truly amazing tones you can get with it, but no matter what, they're going to be very thick and very full

 This is the Sterling by Music Man Stingray Ray 34 PB, and it's a truly excellent bang for your buck bass full of extremely thick and very punchy tones, all for only $800. So the Ray 34 PB is brand new to the 2019 line of basses for Sterling by Music Man. If you don't know Sterling by Music Man, it's the made in Indonesia brand of Music Man guitars and basses, and you get truly excellent value for every single instrument. While they're made in Indonesia, they're brought over to the United States, then they're rigorously checked and inspected and set up and then sent out to distributors

I'm 15. I don't have a lot of money. What's a good cheap bass guitar for beginners?

The Ray34 I have is probably the best that Sterling has to offer before getting an EBMM bass. But given that Sterling basses sound almost exactly the same as an actual EBMM bass, you have to decide for yourself whether you think that the extra nice neck and lighter weight is worth the $2k more. The prices seem to range from about $400 for a Sterling and up to $3000 for an original Music Man. That's a big range, so it's hard to wrap my head around what could be so much better in the Music Man Stingray. I am not made of money but would consider buying a Music Man if it's truly worth the price.

Sterling Stingray vs. Music Man Stingray, what's the difference besides price?

 The roasted maple neck and fretboard is very dark compared to the advertised photo and makes it difficult to see the fret markers. Other than that this is a pleasure to play and I'm now sold on getting a Ray35.

The Sterling by Musicman Ray34 is a great value if your looking for that classic Stingray look and sound. I'm quite impressed with this bass. Comparing it to my ErnieBall Stingray Special which costs more than double, this feels and sounds just as good good. I will say the ErnieBall feels a little more polished with the nicer tuners and the neck being smoother

 Now what's even cooler is another feature that this guitar has and what it is actually what Yamaha have done with this guitar it's actually very sort of user-friendly because with this selector here you can actually change the EQ depending on the style of playing that you are doing. So Yamaha have actually even named these what they actually are. So the first one here is for slap the second one is for pick if you're playing with a pick then flat so that's kind of neutral position then you've got your finger style but you've also got a solo selection which is basically I think it's kind of boosts your signal a little bit a little bit further and of course you don't need to stick to these particular selections you know you don't have to use the finger selection for your finger style of playing but it's just it's just a guide really but it is very helpful and it is it is it is a really versatile bass guitar from that perspective and you know I've been using this for a few months now and I am really really happy with this guitar I think it handles really well it's it's really versatile as I said and the playability is is really good on it too. So what I'm going to do in the next part of the video I'm actually going to demonstrate to you what these different selections EQ selections for the particular style of playing sound like so I'm going to put it to a test and take you through some of my songs and show you what these actually sound like

 This is a Yamaha TRBX 304 and the reason why it's called 304 is because it's a four string bass. They actually have the same model in a five string variation which is basically called 305. It's made out of mahogany body so this particular model is in I think it's something like mint dark mint color but you can get them in in quite a few different colors as well. The actual neck is a five piece maple slash mahogany and with a rosewood finger board

My Bass Guitar (Yamaha TRBX304)

 It's as good as or better than some $900-$1,300 basses I've played. Definitely recommend. And I really don't understand why cheap basses are pushed on beginners: you're gonna need an instrument that makes you want to learn to play it. It's much harder to make a cheap bass sound good

 Sounds great. Records great. I'm running an Ashdown EB-Lite 12-220 EVO III Combo with a Digitech BP355 modeler/FX in the loop. Sounds great thru BP355s XLR outs to interface, and thru a Sennheiser e902 mic on the amp

 The low B string doesn't sound great. I think amps are very particular about being able to handle B strings or not. I might have to start looking at other amps. But I think 

 And I really don't understand why cheap basses are pushed on beginners: you're gonna need an instrument that makes you want to learn to play it. It's much harder to make a cheap bass sound good. An advanced player can make a cheap bass sound good. A beginner needs the BASS to sound good so they will be obsessed with it enough to play it enough and get good

Exceptional for under $1,000

Tone is excellent. Of course, these days the things are slapped together in Asia by slave labor, so it'll require a proper setup once it arrives. Figure that into the price.  Also accept that something WILL go wrong

It's good, but...

 Plus, if you don't agree with the labelling, it's quite an easy fix, you just take the label off. But particularly, the slap setting for me, I think is better suited to reggae or dub sort of things. And now in this next clip, hopefully you'll see what I mean. So, alongside that, I've also found that some of the switch positions are better suited to certain pickups

 This is a five piece maple and mahogany neck with a bolt on construction, and it's got a lovely 24 fret rosewood fingerboard. As soon as I opened the box I could tell how well this bass is made, and as soon as I put it in my hands I could tell how carefully it had been finished. There's not a single sharp fret end anywhere up and down the neck. The setup was really good, the only thing I had to do is slightly lower the action, because that's just what I prefer

 This bass is made in Indonesia. I was a little squirrelly, but the construction is top notch and I found nothing to complain about. I couldn't find any obvious flaws, and it looks, feels, and plays great. No cheap construction materials here

Excellent midrange bass!

 There's no question that these are better pickups quality-wise than we've seen in any other bass. So if you have the money, it's probably worth going around $300 or $400 for a bass in the sense that you just get better stuff on the bass. Manufacturers can't afford to put nice pickups into a $200 instrument. That said, I do feel there are some ways this instrument can be improved

 First of all, it's the only bass we've looked at that has a composite neck, which is something you see a lot in higher quality basses and not a lot in the cheaper basses. Also we've got a 24 fret neck, which I love, I do have one complaint, which I've already talked about in previous videos, this cutaway starts at the end of the 22nd fret, which means that to get to those top two frets, you gotta start reaching over and you can't just slide your hand down like you would anywhere else on the neck. That really bugs me, and I wish that manufacturers, including Yamaha, but many other companies, would get the net on that and start their cutaways at the end of the last fret. Also the way the frets are cut on the G string side here, feels a little rough, it's not quite sharp, but I definitely can feel the frets as I slide my fingers across, so that's something I feel like could be improved on too

 It's like what you actually want when you're trying to dial in different tones. Everything changes the sound, and it changes it in a way that's controllable and noticeable. Yeah, neck position sounded good, it was nice and solid, pretty well balanced tone, nothing really jumped out to me about the articulation dynamic of it, but it was good, it was just a balanced sound. The bridge position definitely added that necessary quack to it, which was nice, it seems to have actually a lot of dynamic to it, as opposed to the first position, there seems to be, if I play harder, I get more quack, if I play less

 This retails for around $350 these days, whereas a lot of the other basses are more around $250. So do you get what you pay for? Is this bass a lot better than the other basses we've looked at? I'd say in some ways, definitely. There's no question that these are better pickups quality-wise than we've seen in any other bass. So if you have the money, it's probably worth going around $300 or $400 for a bass in the sense that you just get better stuff on the bass

Yamaha TRBX304 (Blindfolded Bass Review)

 The position immediately above flat is called pick and this gives a little more definition and clarity, rolls off the low end, adds a little top end and it sounds like this. The top position is called slap, now what that does is give you some nice deep low end, it gives you some nice clean top end to get some of that percussiveness and it scoops out some of the mid range so your playing doesn't get too muddy. Now what I thought I would do is play a little finger style as I have been so you hear what it sounds like in this position. You don't have to use this for slap but it sure sounds good and I'll play that for you too so you hear how it works

 Sleek contemporary design, very comfortable to play, active electronics on board with a ton of options for shaping your tone, a very versatile instrument. You can use this for literally any style of music. This bass has a very slim, fast and comfortable neck. It's five piece, maple and mahogany, very solid and that kind of stability provides great intonation up and down the neck, which by the way is 24 frets, that's two octaves kids and if you like hanging out way up here in those higher notes, the body design really allows for easy access

 We have a blank tonal canvas and what I've done is I've got the volume all the way up, I've got the pickup blender right down the center and I've got both the bass and treble right down the center. These knobs have notched settings here so you can go right down the middle and it sounds something like this. The next position down is what Yamaha calls finger and this just gives a little bit more low end and it rolls the top end off a bit, just kind of gives a warmer and rounder tone and it sounds something like this. Now if you have the volume all the way up on 10 and you need to get to 11, try the solo position that's all the way down and that kind of gives you an overall volume boost particularly in the low mid range, sounds something like this
