First off, I've got a Fender reissue Bass VI that I got in the mid 90s, MIJ (Japan). The Squier is a decent instrument but in nowhere near the same league as my MIJ Bass VI. Why did I buy it then? I use these in church mostly, and occasionally in different bands usually with a reverb/tremolo pedal into a clean bass amp.  Gets that early/mid 60s baritone sound but it's not really a baritone

 It's a bass but tuned one octave down instead of 2. I can play guitar lines, and the strangle switch works great into like a Fender Princeton Reverb where you don't want to harm the 10" speaker.  This is my second Squier from Amazon, the first one was delivered in an open box and NOT in mint/new shape. It had some problems from most likely bouncing around opened for a couple of days

This isn't a bass, nor a guitar, but it fills a need.

 Let me know in the comments below what you think sounded best, whether you like the neck, the middle, bridge pickup, or all four pickups together. But they are very cool guitar. I do like these. Used, you can pick these up anywhere between sort of 250 to 300 pound

 You've got three pickups. These are sort of Jaguar style pickups, a really unique sound. So on to the switching. You've got four switches, basically turn them all up

Bass VI Review, Demo and Unboxing - Squier by Fender Classic Vibe Bass VI

Guitar plays great, set up pretty well out of the box and accepted a light top/heavy bottom custom Stringjoy set to comfortably play in EAEADF#.  Guitar seemed to have suffered some cosmetic and structural abuse, with all of the protective plastic removed from key pieces. Pictured, one can see the pickguard as well-worn immediately after unboxing, as well as the low E (prior to stringjoy set) bent and unwinding towards the higher end of frets.  Overall happy with the guitar in terms of playing, cosmetically it simply needed a new pickguard and strings immediately out of the box due to rough transit and having already been opened, played and protective film peeled

You can move your hand so quickly and so flawlessly over every single note in an instant.  I remember seeing this bass at NAMM and my jaw dropped because the finish is absolutely insane. Then to compliment that, you have a clear pickguard as well as black hardware, and this is driven by Music Man's own bridge and different hardware too, and I have to say they hold up really well, especially the tuning is actually extremely stable, and it works very well. For the pickup, you have Sterling's own H1 Alnico humbucker, and this you can get a lot of really thick, very punchy, just really rich sounds with it that's going to have that classic Music Man growl to it, and then that combined with their three band active preamp really leads to a lot of different ways you can sculpt your tone, and really especially you get that really great Music Man growl when you add the mids just a little more on top of it, and what's great is it sounds like a Music Man. It sounds like its older, more expensive USA made stingray, and there's a lot of just truly amazing tones you can get with it, but no matter what, they're going to be very thick and very full

 This is the Sterling by Music Man Stingray Ray 34 PB, and it's a truly excellent bang for your buck bass full of extremely thick and very punchy tones, all for only $800. So the Ray 34 PB is brand new to the 2019 line of basses for Sterling by Music Man. If you don't know Sterling by Music Man, it's the made in Indonesia brand of Music Man guitars and basses, and you get truly excellent value for every single instrument. While they're made in Indonesia, they're brought over to the United States, then they're rigorously checked and inspected and set up and then sent out to distributors

4 pounds, a significant difference. And the BFR on the wall back here is 7.4 pounds or something like that. In regards to quality control, this isn't a bad bass

 Now this particular model features an ash body, though if you get a painted body, those are mahogany. So this one has an ash body and a roasted maple neck. That's right, just like the current US Stingray lineup, these have roasted maple necks as well. The pickup is Sterling's own H1 El Niko Humbucker, and you have a three-band preamp

The Ray34 I have is probably the best that Sterling has to offer before getting an EBMM bass. But given that Sterling basses sound almost exactly the same as an actual EBMM bass, you have to decide for yourself whether you think that the extra nice neck and lighter weight is worth the $2k more. The Ray34 tuners are also known to be kind of janky, specifically on the purple sparkle finishes. Besides that though, Sterling's are well worth the money, even the SUB series

My question is, what is the difference between the Sterling model of this bass and the original Music Man model in terms of playability/feel and sound? 

The prices seem to range from about $400 for a Sterling and up to $3000 for an original Music Man. That's a big range, so it's hard to wrap my head around what could be so much better in the Music Man Stingray. I am not made of money but would consider buying a Music Man if it's truly worth the price.

Sterling Stingray vs. Music Man Stingray, what's the difference besides price?

 The roasted maple neck and fretboard is very dark compared to the advertised photo and makes it difficult to see the fret markers. Other than that this is a pleasure to play and I'm now sold on getting a Ray35.

The Sterling by Musicman Ray34 is a great value if your looking for that classic Stingray look and sound. I'm quite impressed with this bass. Comparing it to my ErnieBall Stingray Special which costs more than double, this feels and sounds just as good good. I will say the ErnieBall feels a little more polished with the nicer tuners and the neck being smoother
