 As I say, you can go to this darker kind of hammered heavier area and get quite nice ride patterns with a lot of clarity. The moment you start to come out across the taper to the sort of the middle towards the outside edge and you get that nice kind of wash, then of course, when you crash them, you get this really nice kind of quick explosive dark trashy sound. So very, very dexterous. And I would suggest that if you've got the AAX versions, then definitely check these out because they would sit really, really nicely

 It seems if you remember we interviewed Jojo a couple of issues back and he talked about the development of these symbols and he did say that it took kind of a little while for him to kind of get the symbols to where he wanted them to be and I have to say already just the few minutes that we've had just sort of checking them out they are very very complex symbol so I'm not surprised it took them a little while to figure out. I'm just going to quickly take this off the stand I just want to show you basically as you can tell anyway the symbols in two sections you have this lathe section here and then you have this kind of raw darker section here that is basically just hand hammered and you can really feel when you move the symbol that this outer section is really quite thin there's quite a lot of give to that but the middle section is very very kind of rigid very controlled yeah rigid would probably be the best word I could come up with now the idea behind that is that then the bell section and the first half of the taper gives you kind of like your ride area and then this last sort of half of the of the of the symbols taper gives you kind of like the crash elements or the wash element if you want to ride that area too so again very very dexterous again a very complex symbol and as I say I'm sure that Jojo and Mark Love and the people at Sabian probably scratched their heads for a little while trying to come up with this but it's definitely a lot darker than the AAX models that were previously available so if you have those and you're looking for something a little darker a little trashier maybe a little more complex and you want to mix them up or you just want a darker version then there you are you have the 19 inch and the 22 inch version so let's take a little listen to what they sound like oh before I forget I'm not going to sound anything like Jojo I'll make that right clear right from the word go but there are some absolutely stunning videos of Jojo and Mark Giuliana playing one of these symbols between the two of them on the Sabian website there's a link please check out there's four there's a total of four videos in fact and everyone is just jaw on the floor heart-stopping to watch so please do check those out in fact you might even want to skip what I'm going to do and just go straight there frankly but there you go any minute in time I will have a go at giving you some idea of what the HHX Omni Symbols sound like so Okay, well, I have to say, just in the short period of time that we've had these here in the review studio, these are remarkably dexterous cymbals. I also really like the way that they work together. As a pair, they work great, but also just the fact that there's so many different sounds that you can draw from them

My cymbals comprise A & K Zildjian, HH & HHX Sabian and Meinl Byzance. I have managed to procure most of my equipment at huge discounts and they suited the sonic demands I had, thus I jumped for the same, brands irrespective. Hence, I would definitely buy any additional item, brand irrespective, as long as it sounded great or the deal was too darn good.

I get having a preference, and I have mine, a lot of my cymbals are Meinl because I really like them, and most of my heads are from Evans since I like their products, but still I have Tama, Drumcraft and Pearl drums in my kit, Evans and Remo heads (no 2 models are equal), Meinl, Sabian, Diril, Istanbul Mehmet cymbals and Zultan, because I feel they give me the sound I'm searching for, but a lot of the times I see people so obsessed with having everything of the same brand, and by talking to them I see a lot of the times they sacrifice sound for it. 

I wanna know what you think about it. If you have everything matching in your set, why and if you don't the same question. Also, if you saw a drum, a head or a cymbal that would crack your matching set, but would be the perfect sound for you would you just "crack" your matching set?

Sounds Vs Brand Loyalty

 The cymbals share some of the same characteristics with all cymbals made from B20 bronze, having prominent raw unlaid bells and different sized hammer marks trickled down from the HHX, HH and artisan ranges. Both chinas have the traditional china shape and flange with the added bonus of having six 2 inch holes to add that trashier edge to the tone. Sabian HHX Complex Series Additions - Drummer's Review

 Complex they're well a little more complex, a little more hammering, open up a little bit more. This particular setup has the 15 inch medium hats, 18 inch thin crash, 21 inch thin ride which is just a beauty, 16 inch thin crash and then an 18 medium crash. And the thin is gorgeous. We had somebody here mention it sounded like an evolution but a little bit heavier and I couldn't agree with that more

 We did two different setups today with the complex cymbals and then the thins but we actually threw a medium in on this one because it blended well with this particular setup. So I don't want to get too heavy on the specs and all the changes but let me just say they completely revamped the whole thing and all the details are available on our website and of course on Sabian's website. What today is about is just what do these things sound like and my reaction is just 128% positive. These are just awesome

I was a huge fan of the HHX to begin with so it's kind of a loaded thing but in my opinion the line was very cluttered and not very organized. They just basically trimmed up their line quite a bit and they have made it much more easy to sort of to navigate

The "smaller cymbals" thread, in which u/TwoCables_from_OCN gave his cymbal rundown, got me thinking: I don't remember ever seeing a post here where we put up our cymbal list. It's interesting to compare and contrast the different tools for the job that different drummers bring with them. So what's your setup? Why do  you have what you have? 16" Wuhan Lion china (not pictured; hadn't bought it yet). Bought used for $25 over a decade ago. I literally needed to mimic a pistol shot in a song, and this does that.

14" Zildjian K/Z hi-hats - my PDPs were a gift from an ex who never played them, and gave them to me "in the divorce," and these were the only ones of the cymbals I kept. I'd only wanted a set since I started playing.

8" Sabian AA splash, bought used with a spiderweb crack and an edge crack. It's taken another twenty years for it to crack badly enough that I'm finally thinking of retiring it.

11" A Zildjian hi-hat from the 40s?/50s?, used as a splash. Randomly came out if a friend's attic years ago. Wish I had the other one.

16" Wuhan S Series crash - I bought the S Series cymbal pack on a hunch years ago. They were sort of the "A Custom" line from Wuhan - bright and full. I got rid of the others and kept this one. By the way, metal guys, if you want a dirt-cheap anvil-like metal ride with a great sound, cruise Reverb, etc. for an S Series ride. Saw one on GC's used listings once for forty bucks.

18" Zildjian A medium thin crash - possibly the most versatile cymbal ever made. I call it the Frank's Red Hot sauce of cymbals - you can put that shit on anything. Every drummer should have one.

21" 1950s "hollow block" Zildjian A ride - I dated this cymbal for the first time just a few weeks ago, and I was shocked to learn that it was made between 1954 and 1957. I got it for free when I was a broke young drummer, from a family friend who "used to play drums back in 1818." A drummer friend of his asked if he could stash his trap case there "for a few weeks," and ten years later, after losing touch with the guy, he gave the whole thing to me to get it out of his way. This ride was in there. It is far and away my favorite ride I have ever played. If my house were on fire and I could save only one of my cymbals, this is the one I'm taking.

18" Sabian B8 Pro Chinese - bought used circa 1996 with a boom stand for $60. My favorite china I've ever heard or played - surprisingly musical for a china, let alone a B8 china. Further proof that you should trust your ears over the logo. What I recommend B8 Pro cymbals as a general rule? No. Do I think that you should run, don't walk, to get yourself an 18" B8 Pro Chinese? You bet your ass.

20" Wuhan Western Traditional medium ride - I also bought this cymbal pack on a lark. The crash and hats I gave away when I bequeathed my practice kit to my 5-year-old nephew, but this sounded better than the 20" A medium thin I had in that spot before. Yes, I ditched a Zildjian A in favor of a Wuhan, because it sounded better. Used primarily as a big ol' crash, the biggest "exclamation point" cymbal I have. Also great for Van Halen/punk-type bashing. And when played as a ride, it has a great, buttery, almost-K sound to it. 

Alas, with our teenage niece coming to live with us, these are mostly in my cymbal bag, until we buy a bigger house with room to set up my full battleship again. So lately I'm rocking [my quarantine project baby kit.](http://imgur.com/gallery/MOYINCu) The rundown:

He had cracked the edge, and lathed it down 1/2" all around. I have played this little guy a *lot*, and it has never come close to cracking again. *Cymbals don't have to crack, kids.*

18" Zildjian A Field - half of a marching pair, random $40 Facebook Marketplace score. A fantastic little crash-ride: I feel like Billy Martin playing this thing.

What's your cymbal rig?

- Sabian HHX Evolution 20": this had way too much for me. - Meinl Byzance Vintage Pure Light 22": this one was too much the other way, even though I love the sound of the cymbal and it didn't have a lot of wash, it was just too quiet and didn't manage to cut through the rest of the band. - Zildjian K Custom Dark Ride 20": same problem of being way too washy even at very low volumes.
