The tradeoff is that the body is highly resonant and the other strings are prone to sympathetic vibration as a result which I find difficult to control when playing with a pick. Removing the aforementioned treble pickup cover should make that more manageable. tl;dr I'm satisfied with my purchase but I would recommend trying to play at least one Rickenbacker bass in a store before buying one anywhere to see if they're a good fit for you, because they won't be a good fit for everyone.

You've got a maple body You've got maple neck the neck is a neck through construction, so it actually goes all the way through the body to the tailpiece You've got four deluxe Shaler tuners on here that are open back You've got a You've got a Thick thick slab of rosewood on here that Just I don't know it feels great like the front of this is a lacquered it's just maybe not as heavy as just a regular 4003 but Still feels really good got 20 frets with absolutely no for it rough fret ends Polished very well done very well You've got the electronics on here, which are pretty basic you have three-way toggle switch you've got a your bridge volume neck volume bridge tone neck tone and in the in the bridge town pot if you pull it out it gives you more of a vintage It gives you more of a vintage it revoices the bass, so it sounds more of like a vintage rickenbacker Now one of the things that's pretty cool is like you know rickenbacker is one of those instruments that's played by so many people you know whether it's been Paul McCartney or You know Lammy or shoot even Rick James played a rickenbacker and And they're just I don't know man. Rickenbacker 4003s Review

 The shop wanted $1749 for this matte-black 4003s and wouldn't move much on the price, so I passed. I asked sweetwater if they'd sell me a new one for $1699, and they said yes, but I'd have to wait a few months for a Mapleglo.

I started playing bass a year ago but have always admired the look of the Rickenbacker bass. When I first started hanging out in this subreddit, I heard some bad things about them, but then I played a used one at a guitar shop and really liked how it played and, of course, sounded. The shop wanted $1749 for this matte-black 4003s and wouldn't move much on the price, so I passed. I asked sweetwater if they'd sell me a new one for $1699, and they said yes, but I'd have to wait a few months for a Mapleglo

Gear Thread: Week of Sep. 27

The neck was unwieldly, the body shape felt horrible to play with it's sharp binding (perhaps the 4003S would not have the same issue), the bridge design made it feel horrible to play there, the bridge pickup cover really got in the way too, and after removing it you're left with a large cavity unless you buy an aftermarket fill in part. It didn't sound great in a mix, the double truss rod design was both unnecessary and made it a nightmare to setup. Although not an issue on the one I owned I've seen two other Rick basses where the fretboard was ungluing itself from the neck. I agree with other commentors that Rickenbacker seem to not have any desire to improve as they have a waitlist of people willing to pay full price for them

Ever since I can remember, I have wanted a Rickenbacker bass. I finally got one the other day and I couldn’t be more disappointed. I ordered a 4003S and it was delivered without issue. I looked closer and one of the frets was actually coming OFF of the fretboard and being pushed up. The other had a visible gob of glue underneath raising it off the fretboard. This caused the incorrect notes to be played since the frets were way too high in comparison to the rest. The frets in general are sharp and not finished well. There are also numerous body finish issues, the largest of which is a darkened/burn mark I am guessing is from a sander being left on too long. 

All this to say that I am pretty bummed out. I will be returning the bass for a refund, but I really wanted it to work out. It does have that classic sound. I wanted to share this post as a bit of a heads up - Rickenbacker seemingly continues to have quality control issues. My bass was no exception. When you are dropping ~ $2k on a bass, some things just need to be done properly. Happy to share a link to pics for those interested.

Fair Warning - Rickenbacker

 I really wanted to thank everyone for the support, especially during this crazy time, and I really look forward to making a lot more great videos for you guys. So without further ado, today we're looking at a new Rickenbacker. That's right, a new Rickenbacker model. It's the 4003S-5

 The matte black finish is very prone to scratching, dings, and damage, and you have to take extra good care of it. Personally, I wish I went with the walnut finish, like my Rickenbacker 4003 4-string. So one thing I have to knock Rickenbacker for is the omission of a lot of features that are present on the regular 4003. Most notably, the stereo rick-o-sound jack and the shark fin inlays

 Let's take a look. So this is the Rickenbacker 4003S-5 five-string bass. So this is a new model from Rickenbacker unveiled at the Winter NAMM Show in 2018, and this is a new RICK in the truest sense of the word. This bass features newly designed single-coil pickups in this triangular Dorito or pizza-shaped pattern right here

 It's got just your regular Rickenbacker single coil pickups. It has just standard bridge, the pickup cover, same tuners, but this one's got kind of a cool matte black finish that we just found out about. We didn't even know that Rickenbacker did this. It's very smooth to the touch

Moving up the six screw bolt on neck, you have this absolutely gorgeous roasted maple neck with rosewood fingerboard that absolutely feel stunning. You can move your hand so quickly and so flawlessly over every single note in an instant.  I remember seeing this bass at NAMM and my jaw dropped because the finish is absolutely insane. Then to compliment that, you have a clear pickguard as well as black hardware, and this is driven by Music Man's own bridge and different hardware too, and I have to say they hold up really well, especially the tuning is actually extremely stable, and it works very well. For the pickup, you have Sterling's own H1 Alnico humbucker, and this you can get a lot of really thick, very punchy, just really rich sounds with it that's going to have that classic Music Man growl to it, and then that combined with their three band active preamp really leads to a lot of different ways you can sculpt your tone, and really especially you get that really great Music Man growl when you add the mids just a little more on top of it, and what's great is it sounds like a Music Man. It sounds like its older, more expensive USA made stingray, and there's a lot of just truly amazing tones you can get with it, but no matter what, they're going to be very thick and very full

 This is the Sterling by Music Man Stingray Ray 34 PB, and it's a truly excellent bang for your buck bass full of extremely thick and very punchy tones, all for only $800. So the Ray 34 PB is brand new to the 2019 line of basses for Sterling by Music Man. If you don't know Sterling by Music Man, it's the made in Indonesia brand of Music Man guitars and basses, and you get truly excellent value for every single instrument. While they're made in Indonesia, they're brought over to the United States, then they're rigorously checked and inspected and set up and then sent out to distributors

 Let me know which bass you'd pick in the comments below. So here's my final thoughts on the Sterling Stingray Ray 34. This bass is a great value for its money, especially if you can get it on sale. Used, you can also find these things pretty cheap as well

4 pounds, a significant difference. And the BFR on the wall back here is 7.4 pounds or something like that. In regards to quality control, this isn't a bad bass

 Now this particular model features an ash body, though if you get a painted body, those are mahogany. So this one has an ash body and a roasted maple neck. That's right, just like the current US Stingray lineup, these have roasted maple necks as well. The pickup is Sterling's own H1 El Niko Humbucker, and you have a three-band preamp

I'm 15. I don't have a lot of money. What's a good cheap bass guitar for beginners?

The Ray34 I have is probably the best that Sterling has to offer before getting an EBMM bass. But given that Sterling basses sound almost exactly the same as an actual EBMM bass, you have to decide for yourself whether you think that the extra nice neck and lighter weight is worth the $2k more. The Ray34 tuners are also known to be kind of janky, specifically on the purple sparkle finishes. Besides that though, Sterling's are well worth the money, even the SUB series

I am primarily a guitar player, so I don't know a ton about basses and what to look for, so bear with me. I am currently looking to purchase a higher quality bass than my current fender Squier P bass, and would like to switch to short scale for playability.

I'm specifically looking at different models of the short scale Stingray bass. 

My question is, what is the difference between the Sterling model of this bass and the original Music Man model in terms of playability/feel and sound? 

The prices seem to range from about $400 for a Sterling and up to $3000 for an original Music Man. That's a big range, so it's hard to wrap my head around what could be so much better in the Music Man Stingray. I am not made of money but would consider buying a Music Man if it's truly worth the price.

Sterling Stingray vs. Music Man Stingray, what's the difference besides price?

 The roasted maple neck and fretboard is very dark compared to the advertised photo and makes it difficult to see the fret markers. Other than that this is a pleasure to play and I'm now sold on getting a Ray35.

 The weight is roughly the same and the finish is fantastic. One con I do have is the fret markers are black as they should be white. The Sterling by Musicman Ray34 is a great value if your looking for that classic Stingray look and sound. I'm quite impressed with this bass. Comparing it to my ErnieBall Stingray Special which costs more than double, this feels and sounds just as good good. I will say the ErnieBall feels a little more polished with the nicer tuners and the neck being smoother
