 The first two were when the tube box was brand new and just turned on, and again after 45 minutes of warm-up. Then I left it on for 48 hours straight to burn in, and got two more samples. One with no warm-up time, and again after 45 minutes. In theory, the last sample should sound the best, but listen to these on a good pair of headphones or speakers and judge for yourself

 I'd play you a music sample, but it would be pointless to judge it for its absolute sound quality, since the audio in this episode will have gotten compressed when YouTube processed it. However, differences between audio samples are often still discernible, so this gives me a good opportunity to test something I've been curious about. I've read on many occasions that when it comes to tube-based audio devices in general, warm-up and burn-in time can have a noticeable impact on sound quality. So, I captured four audio samples

 This is different than some other low-end tube preamps that only use them as buffers, and rely largely on solid state amplification. And indeed, inside the tube box, there are only five chips total, and none of them are actively modifying the audio signal. The front panel PCB has a few that handle the logic around what the buttons do, and the main board just has a pair of DG412DY analog switches that I believe handle the different gain settings. The build quality inside is also really decent, and it's nice to see that Pro-ject used good components

Pro-Ject Tube Box S2 Turntable Preamp Review

 Hey everyone, it's Colin. How's it going?

 Among vinyl enthusiasts, tube preamps are a popular option.

 The folks at Project Audio reached out to me after seeing a previous video I did about phono preamps,

 and offered to send out one of their models for a review.

 So that's what we're gonna check out this time.

 It's called the TubeBox S2, and it's designed to be compatible with a wide variety of turntable setups.

 It supports both moving magnet and moving coil cartridges, and comes pre-assembled,

 so all you need to do is set it up and plug it in.

 The casing is made of metal, and it feels really solid and surprisingly heavy, but it's still pretty compact.

 It comes with a pair of ECC-83 tubes already installed,

 and since they're a common type, you have the option of swapping them out if you want to play around with the sound.

 There are dip switches on the bottom for changing the preamp's input capacitance and impedance.

 These need to be set to match the phono cartridge you're using,

 and there are a few examples listed in the owner's manual,

 like the Ortofon 2M Red that I have in my turntable.

 For others, you'll need to find the cartridge specifications from the manufacturer yourself.

 Up front, there's also controls for the preamp's gain in six steps.

 This just needs to be set up so the output signal is strong, but not distorting.

 There's also a subsonic filter that can be turned on to roll off frequencies below 20 Hz.

 This can help cut any, like, really low rumble the turntable may pick up.

 Pro-ject makes it clear that this preamp uses the tubes for the actual amplification,

 and there are no op-amp chips anywhere in the design.

 This is different than some other low-end tube preamps that only use them as buffers,

 I spotted some capacitors from Nichicon, relays from Fujitsu,

 One thing that caught my eye is the arrangement for the ground lug.

 It's tied into the chassis of the preamp,

 which means the PCB ends up getting grounded through its mounting screws.

 In some other preamps, I've seen this done really poorly,

 But sticking my multimeter between the lug and the negative side of the power input jack

 shows that there's nothing to worry about with this one.

 Now, this is all great, but what ultimately matters is how it sounds.

 I'd play you a music sample, but it would be pointless to judge it for its absolute sound quality,

 since the audio in this episode will have gotten compressed when YouTube processed it.

 However, differences between audio samples are often still discernible,

 so this gives me a good opportunity to test something I've been curious about.

 even when I was listening to the original high-resolution recordings.

 Maybe it's something that's more apparent with some genres of music than others,
