 The edges were always indistinct and blurry. The Pentax has longer eye relief and eye cups that quickly telescope out for spectacles-free viewing, and retract for eyeglass wearers. Way better than chintzy fold-down eye cups. With the Pentax I get the full, clear field of view with sharp edges

I like this glass!

 I like that there is practically no distortion at the edges. The focus wheel is steady and sure. The eye relief is above what anyone would expect in a pair of compact binoculars. Although slightly heavier than some, they are easy to grip without causing my hand to cramp

I have been looking for a pair of lightweight travel binoculars that I could easily carry in my backpack. These were recommended by Wirecutter, and the price was good. So I bought them and am very happy. While not as bright as my 8x42 pair, they are surprising bright

 I had no fears nor problems with them in bad weather. No problems with them misting up (e.g. if you move indoors from cold outdoors) * Rubber armour helps protect against light damage - but not a (relatively small I should add) drop to hard ground! * Easy to adjust for spectacles if needed - twist eye pieces

Excellent but fragile

 Users without eyeglasses should find these much easier to use.  I use these primarily for backpacking as they are lightweight and good quality, especially for the price. Nearly all other times I use my 8x42 Nikon Monarch 7's.  Would purchase again

Difficult to Use with Eyeglasses.

These are great portable binos. We have larger, better binoculars to carry when our only goal on a walk is birdwatching, but it's nice to have a smaller, lighter, more compact pair that can be stashed in a handbag or kept in the glove compartment such that they're always handy. My husband and I both wear eyeglasses, and the eye relief on these is enough for us both to use these without having to remove the glasses first. A big win

 The rain cover is pathetic and you will want to replace it. The main optic covers are ok, but seriously lacking. You will want to tie them to the binoculars with string so you don't lose them. Unfortunately the front cross member makes it impossible to use most aftermarket lens covers

Excellent optics

 I took them on a trip to Nunavut, riding around on ATVs looking for polar bears. The size fit right in my pocket and they were perfect for spotting bears way across water and tracking them. Any stronger and they'd be too shaky to hand hold or too big to bring along with my other camera gear. The open bridge is also perfect for getting a good grip

Anyway I got these new for $235 so it's still an amazing deal

Great quality and build for the price

A very fine instrument ideal for carrying in an anorak pocket or slung around the neck via the lanyard as it suits.  I purchased this binocular to replace a Leica 8x20 that became "waterlogged" and proved beyond repair. The Leica are priced a 3 to 4 times that of the Pentax 8x25; the only attribute worthy of the Leica is its more compact size but for the rest you are paying for the "name".  Incidentally, as a practicing astronomer I have wide experience of optical equipment owning instruments by Carl Zeiss et al

My father enjoys sitting at our summer house and look out over the ocean, both with and without binoculars. The house is located on a cliff about  80-90 meters (just short of 300 feet) above sea level, with amazing view. You can see for many many miles, with both private boats and shipping traffic going past, as well as seabirds and beautiful dynamic weather and clouds.

I want to get an uncompromisingly good binocular for my father to get even more enjoyment out of the view. He enjoys tracking boats speeding across the water and trying to identify the different cruise ships and ferries passing by many miles away.

I have been looking at something with a compass showing in the visor (probably not correct word), as well as with distance measurements.

So far I've been considering the Swarowski EL Range and the Steiner Nighthunter. I realise these are both made for hunting, but my reasoning being that following a speeding boat across water far away or looking at birds navigating the winds would require similar attributes as hunting. The distance measurement is a somewhat novelty feature for the intended usage, but I know my father will be blown away by it. 

Are these the best options, or have I missed the ideal binoculars?

I am located in northern Europe, in case that matter with regards to availability etc.

Also, the optics in the left and right barrels are perfectly collimated so that there is no discernible doubling of the subject and eye strain is very low - something that I cannot say for any of the Vortex binoculars I have owned. The binocular design is very ergonomic from the shape of the barrels and placement of the focus knob to the very well-constructed adjustable eyecups. The provided case and sling are both incredibly well-made with thoughtful (if not conventional) design details (the case is a side-slung affair in contrast to the usual chest rig provided with other popular binoculars)

High Price - High Performance

 I now find myself bird-watching multible times every day even if just through my sunroom casement windows. These Swaros are expensive, for sure, but worth every penny in my estimation.

I had purchased a pair of Maven 9x42 binocs which were excellent; however, I subsequently convinced myself that I wanted and could afford the best-in-class, so I returned the Mavens for the Swaro 10x42 NL Pure and I am not looking back. The clarity, detail, color spectrum, weight/balance, field-of-view, and ergonomics, especially including the optional forehead rest, are unsurpassed. One bonus was the 18mm eye relief. Due to my facial construction (deep set eyes?), I need the full eyecap extension to enable comfortable viewing

Astounding Optics!
