 I found that it was unusable as a reader due to weight and the need for a remote for page turn buttons. I am not going to sit my "book" on a stand, I want to change positions and "curl up with a book".  Being a tablet the battery life holds up way better than I would have predicted even if it is eink.  The Forma changes orentation when I turn it. When I purchased this I did not expect the weight to bother me but it does when holding for a long time vs other ereaders like the Forma which has the same screen size. One must also touch the screen to change pages which is clunky, many users buy a remote control to turn pages and put the Nova 3 on a stand or table rather than hold it. This is very inconvenient

I am comparing this as an ereader to a Koba Forma. The Forma has side page turn buttons and weighs much less despite the same screen size. The Forma changes orentation when I turn it.  I'm open to a device that is 8 inches or larger, and ideally has a nicer screen. Some options I was considering were the Galaxy Tab S7+ used (tough to find under $400), or going the e-ink route with an Onyx Boox Nova 3.

I wanted to buy an e-reader to read books on because I read a lot, sometimes hours at a time and the e-ink format is better for your eyes. I have an iPad but for extended reading times the backlighting and blue light is bad for eyes. My only problem was I didn’t want to be boxed into buying an Amazon kindle or B&N nook reader that only supported their brand books and subscriptions.  After reading reviews of all the most popular ebook subscription services I settled on “Scribd” app because it had unlimited access for a cheap monthly subscription price to the most books, audiobooks and magazines from all the BIG NAME publishers which means you get lots of new releases

I have the Boox Nova 3 Color and love it, you could likely find one used for well under your budget. The latest Nova Air C would cost closer to $450, but would look better visually as it uses oncell touch and has a warm light. The only problem with these devices is that 7.8 inch is a bit small for note taking, it feels like writing in journal rather than from a standard piece of paper in a binder for school, etc

Under $400 device for reading books, pdfs, comics, manga and taking notes

 First test is without the front light at all. And in such conditions, it's spent around 2% per hour, which amounts to expected total time of around 50 hours of reading time on a single charge, which is really good. Then at front light at 50%, we were spending around 3% per hour, which is expected a lifespan of around 33 hours. And when you crank it up all the way to 100%, the front light to be at full strength, then it actually drops down to 12

 And I was writing in combined kind of colors. So it was black, gray, and all of the different types of color palettes to see what type of battery performance do we get from a combined type of use. And in those conditions, Nova 3 spent around 14% per hour, which basically amounts to expected time around 7.14 hours of continuous combined writing time

 Overall, I think that the Nova 3 color has an excellent battery life provided that you don't go to bananas with the front light intensity.

 Now, if you're going to write for seven hours continuously, your hand is going to hurt a lot. So I think that it's more than enough to go through an extremely busy day, but you will need to charge it. If you have that type of dynamics, then you will need to charge it towards the end of the day. Just remember, lowering that front light will dramatically increase the battery life

Let me talk about some pros and cons really quickly

 Now for the down sides, the overall reading experience is good, but the text is actually not as sharp compared to what you can find on the Nova Air e-reader that I have also reviewed. The text is quite sharp, but it's just not as sharp compared to what you see here, and also you can see the gray canvas, it's darker, so the contrast is not as good compared to what you can see here. So to improve the contrast, you have to increase the lighting. This color display has a limit of 4096 colors

 Because this is a review unit, I have to return. I cannot remove the matte screen protector. I have watched reviews from other YouTube channels and their displays look more vibrant compared to what I have here. From this small exposed area that I see, I can tell the actual display is also matte textured

If you look really closely, you can kind of see the color filter layer, especially in the whites. But it's a little bit harder to see on the newer model and the colors are a little bit brighter

 It has a bunch of reading apps in here, sort of a reading-centric app store. You got some news apps, some study tools and stuff like that. So you don't have to use the Google Play if you don't want. It's easy to sideload apps as well
