 Nothing about the reader is intuitive (at least not to me) and since it's so slow, discovering what various icons are for by trial and error is a nightmare. For example, normally if you try something you get the option to return to where you were. ot so on theis e-reader (or at least not that I could discern). A real dud

 Most people are used to using smartphones which react precisely and immediately upon touch. In contrast, the Pocketbook's touchscreen is like something out of the prehistoric age. Dragging the screen takes an age, squeezing or expanding it to shrink or enlarge the text is slow and jumpy (and I mean you do it several times before it becomes clear that something is happening). It's so bad, I'm beginning to suspect that I've got a faulty machine although I bought the Pocketbook Colour at the same time and that has the same problem

A huge disappointment

I really like the Pocketbook Touch HD3, but I returned the first one I got because the screen lighting was very uneven. Got a replacement, but it turned to have the same issue. It looks like it only has lighting on the top bezel, and none at the bottom bezel. The contrast is way bigger in reality than it looks like in the picture

The original Libra and Forma are probably the lightest options for their size (the lightest 6” options I’ve found are the Kobo Clara and Pocketbook Touch HD3/Touch Lux 5). Edit: some tips as others have noted, keep the device on airplane mode with wifi/Bluetooth off, and try to use the frontlight as little as possible. Also with kindles the initial battery drain after adding large books can be wild.

If you want an SD card slot and lots of battery life, a Nook Simple Touch fits the bill.

You can get one, and a cover, 2nd hand on eBay for not much at all.

They're quite hardy, and you can also get a glowlight model which has a back light.

Battery lasts for a week or more depending on how much reading you do and if you turn it off in between using it.

There’s a large potential that I’m doing an extended service trip abroad (roughly 2 years) that might not electricity and definitely won’t have internet for long periods of time. 

I was told by folks who’ve done it previously that an e-reader can come in handy, so you’re not lugging physical books. So after doing some research, I wanted to ask you!

My main goals would be durability and battery life, to load up on books before the trip and head out. Library size doesn’t matter as much because I can always get epubs or convert filed. 

Any thoughts? I was looking at the bigger Book Nook from Barnes and Noble.

Best e-reader for extended, internet-less trip?

If you’re not carrying a bag or something with you and mainly reading ePubs etc (not PDFs which require a 10”+ ereader to be a comfortable experience), I’d recommend a 6” ereader. At 6” I’d recommend Kobo Clara, Boox Poke3, or maybe the Pocketbook Touch HD3. These three options have colour temp control which allows you to have warm frontlights (a godsend when reading in dim lighting or in complete darkness. If you are carrying a bag around, then you could go up to 7 or 8”

What's a good ereader for me? I don't have a budget atm, so I'm open to all kinds of suggestions.

A Good eReader

 The battery life is great. The variety of book formats you can download is phenomenal. If you want to move away from Amazon, this is the way to go. Just wish they would become more familiar in the US
