Netgear CM500 vs Netgear CM600

Now that I work from home full time, I'm wondering if I should re-architect my home network to put my work devices on a separate VLAN from my personal stuff (probably makes me sound quite paranoid, but oh well). I know my router doesn't support that with the native firmware, so I would have to flash a different firmware if I want to stick with what I have.

Just be careful when thinking about purchasing this modem if you need more ethernet jacks or make sure your wireless AP has them.

This modem was an upgrade from my NetGear CM400 so I could get the 200Mbps that my internet plan provided for. The CM400 was also an upgrade a few years ago for another NetGear modem. It took three days and calls to Xfinity, Lynksys and NetGear (all with long waits on hold) before the NetGear tech I spoke figured out why I was still only getting 100Mbps download speeds. The ethernet cable included with the modem was a Category 5 which, he explained, has a limit of 100Mbps

Nah. You're going to hit about 580Mbps max, just like I did with my C6250. Netgear says it can reach up to 680Mbps, but it really can't. You need something that can reach the 960Mbps or higher territory like the CM600/CM700 or combo units like the C7000/Orbi CBR40/CBR750 or any of the DOCSIS 3

From my understanding this Modem can support 300 Mbps down over cable lines per the manufacturer spec. I'd hate to buy a new modem and have no luck with it either.

So far, after several hours of testing, the speed seems to be stable. The speed is maintained between 320Mbps to 350Mbps with the Time Warner extreme plan. The reason why I am giving this 3 stars is because it was not an easy install for me. It took me 3 hours to mate this thing with my Apple Time Capsule router

we turned it on for the first time on May 31st, and it failed yesterday, July 9th. Netgear normally makes fantastic devices, our AC3200 Netgear Nighthawk router has served us well for four years. eventually we'll have to buy a new one but four years is a long time for a router and I attribute its longevity and ability to handle massive amounts of traffic for four years straight to its superior technology and build. I highly recommend the Nighthawk routers, they are great

that said, once connected to the router, all was well. Good speed, stable connection, but runs a bit warm. Other than that setup glitch, so far, it's all good

I wound up returning it to Amazon with zero hassle and paid a few bucks more for TP-Link modem with better specs. I’ve had good luck with a recently-purchased TP-Link router and am hoping for the same with their modem. As for Netgear, they’ve lost this customer and I encourage other potential customers to think carefully before buying Netgear based on their trust of the brand.

I don't think they even offer extreme 150 in my area anymore. So if you own your own modem check your speeds from time to time you may have to upgrade your modem to get what you are paying for, you need at least 12 channels down although I think most of the newer DOCIS 3 have atleast 16 x 8. I have had to reset this modem three times in last 30 days to keep the speeds where they should be. It will drop down to 100 mbps then after calling Comcast the speeds will shoot up to 270 mbps which upgraded too

2. Once I had modem connected to coax and called Comcast to initiate the connection, the second-to-bottom internet connection light (the one that looks a bit like Saturn) would still not turn on. After hanging up, much cursing to my partner about telecom monopolies, and about 20 minutes of just leaving it alone, I noticed the connection finally activated by itself (the Comcast person didn’t tell me there could be such a lag.) Shout out to the excellent Netgear customer service guy who helped me figure out the coax thing :)

Called netgear, after 2 levels of support, they couldn't figure it out either. Suggested I return it which I'm doing. Still upset about all the run around. My current Modem, a 4 year old Netgear CM400 just started getting very slow and am not sure if it is Cox or the modem
