JBL Synthesis System, a dream come true

 I settled on mounting the MP-110 on the Audio Technica AT-LP1240, and its VTA is as versatile as they come. On the AT-LP1240, it’s at approximately 85% of its peak height. This took a ton of trial and error and was a complete pain, as you would expect. Finally, this cart can be a bit edgy on the treble, especially with female artists, but I think it’s more closely associated with a proper VTA setting than anything else

I’ve been using this cartridge for almost two months now and I can happily report that this is a great cartridge, especially considering its cost. I have broken it in using a combination of three different turntables, three different phono preamps, and three different integrated amps.  This is the gear I’ve used:  Turntables: Audio Technica AT-LP1240 U-Turn Orbit Teac TN-550  Phono Preamps: Parks Audio Budgie Tube Phono Preamp U-Turn Pluto Phono Preamp Cambridge CP2 Phono Preamp  Integrated Amps: Outlaw Audio RR2150 NAD c352 Kenwood KA-7300  In addition, these are the cartridges I own and used for comparison: Ortofon 2M Bronze ($440) Ortofon 2M Red ($100) Grado Prestige Gold ($260) Audio Technica AT95E ($45) Audio Technica AT440MLb ($200)  And yes, I have tried every single combination of the components – and yes, it took forever (months). Overall, I would consider the Nagaoka MP-110 my second favorite cartridge of the six I own regardless of price – second only to the Ortofon Bronze, which costs $300 more

 The Nagaoka produces a very pleasant sound, and for every genre of music I threw at it. In addition, it handles surface noise as well as a cartridge possibly can, in my opinion. The MP-110 tends to handle older records and/or poor vinyl pressings very well. It’s also a solid tracker

 There is such a spectrum of price points, that I thought going for lower of the middle of the pack would yield good results, and I am pleased so far. Although I have had great luck with the Grado Blacks I have used in the past and was considering getiing a Grado Green or Blue, this cartridge was a decent purchase for the price, and really seems to be a good value. I'm sure there is more breaking-in to do, but right away I was happy with the tracking, clarity, and stereo separation. I'm just listing to records, not back queuing or scratching, so this seems like a decent choice for quality while being able to save some $$ to buy more records :)

Great Investment For The Price

The Nagaoka is a mellow sounding cartridge with a forward, slightly harsh, midrange, significant midbass hump (but rolled-off deep bass), and slightly harsh highs. The sound is definitely not flat, and the exaggeration of certain frequency while muting of others makes it sound quite colored. However, at low volume levels, is more listenable than other, more accurate $100 cartridges such as the Shure M97, or the 2Mred. If you like accurate sound, this is not it

 Mating it with the correct phono stage is important. Some phono stages, like the Emotiva, also have a slightly forward midrange and would not mate with the Nagaoka. However, more restrained phono stages, such as Pro-Jects or Schiit Mani would be a good match.

For analog signals a Technics SL-1200 with Nagaoka MP-200 is fed into an Audio Research SP-9 preamp. The sound is non-fatiguing, has impressive soundstage and dynamics. These speakers were very difficult to find in the US as they were primarily marketed in Asia. The setup provides a very engaging sound that makes you tap your foot along to the music

Congrats on the new setup man. The Heresy's are my dream speakers, definitely the next (and final) upgrade to my system. My dad has an early pair that he bought in college that I spent countless hours of my childhood listening to, so there's definitely a sentimental attachment to Klipsh for me. But they are absolutely a high quality build that I am sure you will love for years to come🤘🏼!

Splurged last weekend on a set of Heresy IVs and a Naim Uniti Atom

Yes, I hear a distinct and beautiful difference with the Nagaoka MP-200 stylus on an MP-110 cartridge body. Big improvement!. Brighter (in a good way), much more nuanced, more detail, more separation in voices and instruments, great bass, and mids, and highs without harshness nor sibilance.

I’ve been through so many “budget” carts. My list includes the M97xe, MP-110, Grado Black, Sumiko Pearl, OM 20, and some others that I’ve picked up over the years at yard or estate sales. My primary turntable is an SL-1700. I swap carts out when I get the urge and enjoy hearing  the differences each one offers. The Nagaoka is my daily driver because I feel that it offers the least amount of surface noise on older albums.

Anyway, I’d love to read your comments and insights regarding if you feel carts in the $250 to $500 range are truly and upgrade from the $100-$150 carts in sound quality or are they merely “just different sounding.” Do you have to spend more than that to achieve a seriously discernible sound? Does the Technics limit the viability of more expensive carts? Maybe just a stylus upgrade is the way to go? Damn, this is a rabbit hole.

TLDR: I’ve got an itch to get a new cart that’s a step up from “budget.” Need insights.

Better or Just Different? Looking For Thoughts on Cart Upgrade

I have one and it’s sibilant which will be especially noticeable for you coming from the Grado which is IMO too far the opposite of sibilant and is somewhat muted. After a couple years of the Red, I saved up and bought a Nagaoka MP-110, and then the MP-200. A world of difference over the 2M Red. The MP-110 is good (better than the 2M Red), and the MP-200 is stellar

I have had my U-Turn Orbit for about 3 years now.  The only upgrade has been to an acrylic platter.   It came with a Grado Black3 and have been looking into upgrading the cartridge to an Ortofon 2M Blue.  After looking at the price of the Ortofon Blue, I started looking into how much a whole new turntable would be.  For example, at $499 I could get a new Pro-Ject EVO versus spending the $226 on the cartridge alone.

The U-Turn as served me well, and I was hoping that upgrading the cartridge to the Blue would result in a better listening experience.  The Grado to me has a very muddy sound with no highs.  I have also wrestled with slight buzzing with the turntable since getting it.  I have tried different cables, grounding, different preamps, and nothing has really helped.  Which then brings me back to maybe it is time to try a new turntable.

Just wanted to get some ideas of what others think.  Is the U-Turn a solid turntable that the Ortofon Blue will make even better?  Or would moving on to the Pro-Ject EVO be kind of a "next step" to a better overall solution?
