Morakniv 510 Carbon Steel Knife vs Morakniv Companion Green Fixed Blade Knife

Good, heavy knife. Shape on delivery. This is carbon steel. I have to say it’s impressive

I take into account the type of steel on my knives and the properties of that steel, so when I was getting a Carbon steel knife, I expected some rusting/corrosion through use. However, upon the first few of uses peeling an apple, I noticed the discoloration and patina started to form on the steel. There was also a strong odor that emanated from the knife, so I regarded it as a smell from the manufacturing process. I washed, dried and oiled the steel after each use to minimize the corrosion/rust, but every time I used it for apples, the smell would return (metallic smell produced from grinding steel)

No expensive fluff that you feel compelled to store. Every penny went into the knife. IMHO, a smart choice. The unspoken message, this knife is about intelligent utility, not fluff

75 inches. It's a thin blade. It's only about 0.08 inches thick, so it's not a very thick blade at all

Carbon blades are tough but easy to sharpen with the only downside being that they rust much easier than stainless so there is some maintenance needed. As you can see the blade on mine has taken on a dark, almost black patina from skinning game which is actually a good thing and helps keep the bad rust from forming. I just wash this knife after use and apply a light coat of mineral oil. What I really love about this knife is the way the sheath clips onto the button of my hunting overalls

If you are going to use this for fire-starting your first step should be to grind the back to a usable shape. Handle: Cheap feeling injection molded plastic, feels like what they make molded garbage cans from. That's not a bad thing in terms of durability (garbage cans are meant to sit outside for years), but it will feel cheap in your hands. The plastic contributes to its relatively light weight

In my experience these grip pretty well even when wet and also compliment the blade size pretty well for most tasks. This material and grip also come in handy for some tasks since there is no gimping on the blade, which I have never personally had a problem with. For a softer material, these handles seem to hold up very well, which was one of my concerns several years ago when I bought my first one. 3

This knife costs about 8 euro, which is basically nothing it's the price you would pay for two beers in a bar, but you get a really quality bushcraft ...

I am waiting for Amazon to fix this issue and correct their website!!! Amazon guys, you need to check all Mokarniv's SKUs (colors, materials). Point #2: Handle ergonomics is good and feels comfortable but the material is feels cheap for the knife made in Sweden (at least, that is what it says on the blade). Point #3: The blade is thin and feels cheap too but it is ok for the price. Point #4: It came very sharp

You'd have to saw on your hand with it to cut yourself. The sheath is the loosest I've seen from them as well. The knife rattles badly and one shake pops it right out. Don't know if this is representative of all 510's but it's bad

I am going to see if I can modify my belt to allow the sheath to be more secure. For the price, good knife for general use. And I would buy another if I can modify the sheath.
