  All in all, what I got was a usable computer for a very low price (compared to what these things went for new). If you're expected to get a basically brand new machine, you might be disappointed in your purchase, but that's an unreasonable expectation given the selling price. What you do get is a totally functional computer, which, with some investment of your own time and a little extra money, you can clean up and upgrade to a pretty respectable system.

Performance-wise, you're not going to see much difference between the X201 to X270, as they use dual-core CPUs with almost zero performance gains (and in some cases, there's performance degradation, e.g., X230 vs X240). That said, there are some notable efficiency gains with the later models if battery life is a concern

**Background**: I use [this](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07C9ZLVYH/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&amp;psc=1) 11e I picked up off of Amazon's refurbished section back in 2019, intending to use it as a more durable replacement for when I went into the Peace Corps. It works great at home and fills all of my very casual computer needs. Currently my parent's computer is frustratingly slow for them and I'm thinking I can format this for them to use if/when I upgrade to a more durable and travel friendly option. I'm at home for the winter after travelling without a laptop all summer, so upgrading now would only benefit my parents being gifted this laptop. Otherwise, upgrading and looking into this is just me occupying myself while I'm at home. If there's advantages to waiting until I purchase another laptop, please let me know! At the longest, I think I won't need it until the Peace Corps restarts and sends me out, which may be up to 1-2 years from now. 

**Intended use**: I want to travel with this, for short term trips up to digital nomadism. For me this means bike touring, travel backpacking (and hiking, to a much lesser extent), and daily use in a developing country (ie Peace Corps conditions). This means it will hopefully be rattling in a bike pannier for months at a time and run the gamut of humidity, dust, dirt, etc. Be in a backpack that will likely be tossed between buses and trains all day long, and so on. I know much of this will come down to how I protect and care for the laptop, but durability has led me to Thinkpad laptops, and size/weight has brought me to the X series. Any other recommendations (including to keep and use the 11e for this) are welcome. 

*Actual uses* for the computer are pretty tame. It'll mostly be general web browsing, a lot of writing, running a blog, movies/streaming. I think the most intensive use it could have is photo editing, although this is still a hobby that's on my "want to learn" list. Possibly video chats for online tutoring, connecting with home, etc. There's a slim chance I'd want to do some video editing, but nothing too crazy. For booking tickets and doing research, etc. I do like my tabs, having 70+ open at a time isn't unusual for me if that matters much.

**Priorities, in some particular but not very strict order:**

*Durability* \-  see above. I hope to put this through the wringer if all goes well. Are certain models or series more known for this? Less known for it? How equal are all thinkpads created.

*Size and weight* \- Weight is important, as it'll always be on my back. Less than 3 pounds ideally, lower the better. Size, I'm comfortable with my 11e and anything smaller or thinner would be a plus.

*Battery life* \- This is where my 11e flunks the most. I can maybe get 2-ish hours out of it. The higher the better here, especially because I'd expect to need it to last through power outages and unreliable electricity that's often seen in rural developing countries (as in, you know it, Peace Corps). Also it would be very nice not to be always tethered to a socket when I'm trying to find a place to work in random cafes. It looks like some of the thinkpads can go above 10 hours? That would be dreamy, relatively. I also see hot-swappable batteries are an option on some of them? 

*Cost* \- This priority is two-fold. First, I'm not on a crazy high budget. 200ish would be ideal, a good deal for less would be very nice, and 400 is probably the highest I can go unless there's a convincing argument. Refurbished and used options have treated me well so far, which is helpful, and I've been wanting to play with linux setups, so I wouldn't mind ones that don't come with an OS. Actually, that or a Windows 7 option is probably preferred. 

Secondly, the weirder part of the cost priority, is that I'm not looking for anything so expensive I break my heart if its stolen, damaged, etc, and I can't reasonably replace it within my travel budget. I treat my gear well enough, and I do care for it, but I don't want to care *about* it. I don't like being so attached to anything that it's not functionally replaceable without concern, at least for this type of use. At home would a different situation.

*Access to self repair, parts, upgradability, and/or janky repair shops* \- I don't have a super specific explanation for this one. I'm comfortable following some tutorials for self repairing and digging through maintenance manuals. The ability to upgrade and replace most parts seems important, but I don't know how similar or different thinkpad series are in this respect.

**Other questions and notes:**

*Buying now versus later -* Do the considerations of lifespan and price vary so much that it would make a significant difference if I buy it now or wait until I have the immediate use? I don't think the range of uses I intend for will change that much, but 

*Lifespan* \- This is more of a curiosity. I'm seeing a lot of the used and refurbished thinkpads are already years old, sometimes a decade old (I think, could be wrong). How long are you all getting out of these computers? How long, roughly, should I expect? How much should I prioritize or be concerned with upgradability and futureproofing?

*New versus used, and generation age* \- I entirely expect to buy used for this, considering my cost priorities and also that the older models appear to fit my needs a lot better without a difference in weight. Are there benefits or things I'm overlooking for buying newer versions? How much should I be concerned about the laptop's generation? Is there a general age range I should stay within?

*Screen* \- As you might be able to tell, I'm hoping to use this in a lot of conditions, and particularly outside. Are there screen types that are more made for this? Is the difference so much that I should deep dive into it? Any other solutions or tips y'all have for it?

*Sim Card/WWAN* \- I see some of these have sim card options, which sounds mighty useful to have for my intended use. Is there a good way to tell if used//refurbished options have this installed? I've seen some mixed results for people using that on linux systems, anybody have experience with that? I'm sure that would be a separate post whenever I'm actually setting it up.

*X270, X280, and others* \- My initial searching led me to the x280, and the USB C charger seems ideal (one less cord and charging block to carry is a big plus). the x270 looks nice with battery life, and I haven't dove into options in that series or other series very much. What are other major pros/cons/differences/series/models that I'm overlooking? How much variation does the x2-- series have overall? It seems to be a lot more than I was expecting on first glance.

As you can probably tell, I'm also looking for any blind spots in my priorities and what I'm looking for, so any and all advice is very welcome! Including on other brands and options that you know of. Recommendation for long term rugged travel laptop

Not sure if that's specifically something I'll have to look for or if all modern computers will be up to the task. I'm in the US, looking for something <1K.

My Lenovo Thinkpad from nearly a decade ago hasn't been working too well for me lately, sometimes struggling with video calls and buffering videos. Also, it's graphics card isn't good enough to run a few games I'd like to play (Civ 6, Ori & the Blind Forest, Journey). Not sure if that's specifically something I'll have to look for or if all modern computers will be up to the task. I'm in the US, looking for something <1K

 If you do a lot of word processing this might be a downer. Other than that the build quality is EXCELLENT! It feels solid. The keyboard is really nice and positive and the keys regular size. Touch pad is decently sized and feels very responsive

 Again, I use it with Linux so it's plenty fast. The Windows pro it came with weighed it down a lot. You can still use it with Windows but Linux is where this computer shines!  4 core Intel, SSD, 4GB of memory for less than $250 (and not a chromebook)? You can't beat this deal!

 The keyboard is really nice and positive and the keys regular size. Touch pad is decently sized and feels very responsive.  The laptop is pretty lightweight and very very portable. Battery life is excellent

 When I fly I much prefer to use this laptop as it's super easy to get through security and fits easily on the tray in coach.  Don't expect a supercomputer. Again, I use it with Linux so it's plenty fast. The Windows pro it came with weighed it down a lot

 If you aren't interested in games and but want a portable laptop with excellent application performance, the ThinkPad X201 is a fine choice and wins an Ultimate award.

The best business laptop we've tested is the LG gram 17 (2021), a well-built ultraportable laptop with long battery life. Its 17-inch screen is great for split-screen multitasking, and due to its larger size, there's enough room on the keyboard deck to include a Numpad, which is handy for those working with lots of numbers. The keyboard feels great to type on for extended periods, the touchpad is large and responsive, and there are many ports for wired peripherals and external displays. Performance-wise, its Intel 11th Gen. CPU is more than capable of handling productivity tasks like text formatting, web browsing, spreadsheets, and presentations. The keyboard gets a little hot under load, but the fans are quiet, so you don't have to worry about causing too much noise.

If you prefer a more compact laptop, get the Dell XPS 13 (2021). It's also an ultraportable Windows laptop, but its smaller size makes it much more portable. While you don't get as much screen space for multitasking, and you lose the Numpad, you're still getting a premium device with a comfortable keyboard, responsive touchpad, and enough battery life to get you through a typical workday. The biggest drawback is its limited port selection, which consists of two USB-C/Thunderbolt 4 ports.

For Mac users, we recommend the Apple MacBook Air 13 (2022), one of the best laptops for business and personal use we've tested. Like its M1 predecessor, the 2022 model feels exceptionally well-built and is very portable. It has a new design, a brighter and slightly larger display, a better 1080p webcam, and a faster M2 SoC. Alternatively, you can go with the older Apple MacBook Air 13 (M1, 2020), which is cheaper and often on sale. It isn't as sleek or shiny as the new model, but as far as laptops go, it's still one of the best-looking and most premium ultraportables you can find. Plus, it has longer battery life than the newer model.

If you don't want to spend too much on a high-end mobile workstation like the MSI WS76 (2021), the LG gram 17 (2021) is a great option.  the Lg Gram 16, which is officially the world's lightest 16-inch laptop, which is impressive, although there aren't that many 16-inch laptops on the market. The only other one I can think of really is the Macbook Pro 16, which weighs 2 kilograms. This weighs about the same as a Dell Xps 13 at just 1.19 kilograms

 You are of course going to get much better performance from something like this, although of course you are compromising on it being thicker and heavier. But really, unless you're regularly using demanding apps, the power on offer here with Intel's 11th Gen chips will be more than enough for editing in lightroom, watching Netflix while you're procrastinating on my essay, or even putting together a friend's lockdown birthday video montage in Premiere Pro. It's nothing like as rich or full as you get on, say, the Macbook Pro or even a Dell Xps. Speech and effects are clear enough, and it gets reasonably loud and noise levels, although it does still depend on the laptop, but there's just not much bass to round things out

 Although of course that would compromise battery life and maybe maybe a more aggressive price. These are very expensive as I say at about 1500 pounds or 1700, so you are definitely paying a premium for this ultra lightweight design. That said, I have seen the 16 listed for as low as 1250 pounds already with a lower spec and this actually looks like even better value as you're still getting all the main gram benefits. 4.7 pounds is pretty normal for gaming and workstation laptops at 15 - 17 inches.  I think a large M1 laptop at half that weight would be very nice, see the LG Gram 17 for instance.

I agree, I had a max spec 2008 15” MBP and at 5.5 pounds it was heavy. My 4 pound 2016 15” MBP was noticeably lighter and I’m not interested in going back to 5+ pounds so I’m getting a 14” M1 Max model.

They have so many models. Generally weight is due to additional cooling solutions as well. SO anyone looking for lightness could choose the 13" base or the Air. For people who really need more power should be happy with the 14 & 16" models. They are only a tad bit heavier than 13" model... so really not a concern. I mean when I life the lenovo T450 or something or put it in a bag pack - that is Heavy (all in my personal context)

I remember when Apple released the Macbook Air in 2008. The most spec-obsessed techies criticized Jobs for removing the optical drive, saying it was too impractical for &quot;serious work&quot;. (Back then, Jobs was non-stop criticized after every product release, which makes the &quot;This wouldn&#39;t have happened under Saint Jobs!&quot; stuff very funny.) But it was hard to appreciate the value of an ultralight ultrathin computer until you used one. Weight doesn&#39;t wow you on a spec sheet, but it turns out to be one of the most important features.

Let me be clear: It&#39;s not bad that the new MBPs exist for pros. For the few that need it, desktop level performance in that form factor is mindblowing. But I suspect there are diminishing practical returns on all this power. This isn&#39;t a smartphone, so I&#39;m also skeptical as to how useful this super long battery is. For most of us, this seems like a bad trade off. 

The weight is maybe a tolerable sacrifice for the macbook pros, because these are pro machines for pro use cases. For the rest of us? I hope Apple keeps making the Macbook Air thinner and lighter (so long as it doesn&#39;t compromise durability).

What I love about this machine is the battery life, it last all day without having to recharge and that I can charge it from a PD power bank, which is another plus.
