Keyboard

Cheapest laptop for writing

If you are up for second-hand machines an old business laptop like the ThinkPad t420 is a pretty good laptop for what it is, the sandy bridge i5 can still deliver acceptable performance though you may see it snag in some areas, another reason I suggest this is because of the keyboard, if you are doing a lot of typing, nothing can compare to the keyboard of the ThinkPad.

The Enter key is SO soft and mushy and I've noticed many of the keys, like the pair of Space bars, are also soft and don't register contact multiple times. VERY frustrating as I can type around 50 wpm and I'm having to Backspace WAY too much! GRR!. I want to send this POS back and try another brand, but I've found no other alternatives in my searches.

Battery Life

Love this but concerned

When in rest mode, it takes lot of battery to keep it going and then eventually shuts off as it runs out of battery. Though I still don’t feel it keeps it’s charge too well in general even when it has been charging and then you unplug to use it. The screen is sensitive, so be sure not to place the laptop head first on its screen or else you may get a pixelated screen. I did that since that’s what I do with my old laptop to let it cool down which was fine for that one, but it’s not a good idea with this laptop so I stopped

Good but with some disappointments.

It might be marginally but use it for a couple hours and it's going to need a charge. I wouldn't recommend this for students. Having 2 classes in row will mean you're looking to sit near a plug in class to keep it charged. You can dim the screen down but that's not always possible when you're in a bright classroom

Portability

Runs Ubuntu 16.04 with no problems

I was looking for a fairly basic and dependable laptop that would work easily with Linux and this has fit the bill. I installed Ubuntu 16.04 and it has worked extremely well. While the graphics are nothing to brag about, I can play Secondlife, Runescape and other games

Does not come with keyboard

We did not open the shrink wrap as there was no indication of a keyboard. Be aware of false depictions of keyboard included even in the video. Otherwise, the product should be ok if you want a tablet, not a PC.
