Hello, i've recently discovered thinkpads and their history. Interested in buying a laptop around 1k to 1.5k euro so im wondering if the build quality and durability of thinkpads is worth it over getting a gaming laptop with ryzen 7 5800 and a 3060 gpu.

Will be using it for machine learning mostly, python / octave / rstudio etc which requires processing power and preferably 16 GB of RAM.

Thinkpads don't have a gpu in this price range, mostly have 8 GB of ram and the cpus are relatively old and weak. So can you please help me see the appeal? thanks

Why choose thinkpad over a gaming laptop?

Over the 18 months I've owned it, I can say that it definitely lives up to the ThinkPad name. My one complaint would be the keyboard and the fact the TrackPoint buttons don't always click, but honestly it's still one of the better modern keyboard/mouse units I've used on a modern laptop. For reference, I own multiple ThinkPads ranging in release date from 2004 to 2019 (with the 2019 ThinkPad being my P53) and I am still thoroughly impressed with the quality of my P53.

Are the new ones being released living up to the durability and great keyboards that the older ones were renowned for? I'm really curious, I'd love to have a go-to brand where I know I'm going to get a solid machine that will last me for years to come with no problems, but it seems like potentially the quality of all of the major brands is in decline?

Are Lenovo still making decent thinkpads?

 Depending on the price, and if you *need* the features it offers over the P1/X1E, Id say go for it, but if you want it for novelty or some false preconception that its going to run cooler, last longer on battery, etc, steer clear. Ive been using my P53 exclusively at home (desktop replacement) and dailying my P1G2 for the last couple months for context.

I have been using an X1 Extreme Gen 2 for a while now. I love it but I have really fallen for the build of the workstation P/T series.  


I Love how easy it is to swap out keyboards and the build quality. The Thin and light chassis is nice with the X1 extreme but you can tell that it is at a compromise to thermals as well as (build quality is good but it doesnt have) that inherent ThinkPad quality of user serviceability.

After fully recharging the laptop, we set up the machine in power-save mode (as opposed to balanced or high-performance mode) where available and make a few other battery-conserving tweaks in preparation for our unplugged video rundown test. (We also turn Wi-Fi off, putting the laptop into airplane mode.) In this test, we loop a video&mdash;a locally stored 720p file of the Blender Foundation short film Tears of Steel(Opens in a new window)&mdash;with screen brightness set at 50 percent and volume at 100 percent until the system conks out.

It would be nice if the ThinkPad P53 weighed a pound less or lasted an hour longer away from a wall socket, but it wouldn't change the laptop's mission: to rip through enormous workloads in the shortest possible time. As of now, we don't know a machine better suited to that purpose, or one more likely to put a grin on demanding professionals' faces.

Next up is another synthetic graphics test, this time from Unigine Corp. Like 3DMark, the Superposition test renders and pans through a detailed 3D scene and measures how the system copes. In this case, it's rendered in the company's eponymous Unigine engine, offering a different 3D workload scenario than 3DMark, for a second opinion on the machine's graphical prowess. We present two Superposition results, run at the 720p Low and 1080p High presets

Its 17-inch screen is great for split-screen multitasking, and due to its larger size, there's enough room on the keyboard deck to include a Numpad, which is handy for those working with lots of numbers. The keyboard feels great to type on for extended periods, the touchpad is large and responsive, and there are many ports for wired peripherals and external displays. For Mac users, we recommend the Apple MacBook Air 13 (2022), one of the best laptops for business and personal use we've tested. Like its M1 predecessor, the 2022 model feels exceptionally well-built and is very portable. It has a new design, a brighter and slightly larger display, a better 1080p webcam, and a faster M2 SoC. Alternatively, you can go with the older Apple MacBook Air 13 (M1, 2020), which is cheaper and often on sale. It isn't as sleek or shiny as the new model, but as far as laptops go, it's still one of the best-looking and most premium ultraportables you can find. Plus, it has longer battery life than the newer model.

If you don't want to spend too much on a high-end mobile workstation like the MSI WS76 (2021), the LG gram 17 (2021) is a great option. This well-built model has a spacious and sharp 17-inch QHD display, but it's still very portable, thanks to its thin and light design. You can configure it with an Intel 11th Gen. Core i3, i5, or i7 processor, up to 16GB of RAM, and 2TB of storage. Its battery life sits around 13 hours of light use and charges over USB-C, so you don't need to deal with a proprietary power adapter. You get plenty of ports, including USB-As, USB-C/Thunderbolt 4s, an HDMI, and a MicroSD card reader. Unfortunately, the display's factory calibration isn't very good, meaning you'll need to calibrate it before you do any work.

A macOS alternative would be the Apple MacBook Air 13 (2022). This thin and light laptop has plenty of power to handle photo editing; the downside is a smaller 13-inch display. Also, it only has two USB-C ports, meaning you'll likely need a dock if you want to plug in multiple peripherals. Its M2 SoC is plenty fast, and the battery lasts around 10 to 11 hours of light use. If you want to save even more money, the older Apple MacBook Air 13 (M1, 2020) is still available. At its regular price, it's cheaper than the M2 MacBook Air, and it's often on sale, so you'll likely see it deeply discounted for Black Friday. Its M1 SoC isn't as fast, but still more than capable of handling most photo editing tasks.

 I wish it was a bit bigger, there was room for this.The other issue is by default the laptop is set to too aggressively throttle in software and requires tweaking.Other than that fantastic all around, 2 nvme slots, 1 upgradable ram slot, lots of IO.

Apple kills the non-Touch Bar MacBook Pro

 the Lg Gram 16, which is officially the world's lightest 16-inch laptop, which is impressive, although there aren't that many 16-inch laptops on the market. The only other one I can think of really is the Macbook Pro 16, which weighs 2 kilograms. This weighs about the same as a Dell Xps 13 at just 1.19 kilograms

 You are of course going to get much better performance from something like this, although of course you are compromising on it being thicker and heavier. But really, unless you're regularly using demanding apps, the power on offer here with Intel's 11th Gen chips will be more than enough for editing in lightroom, watching Netflix while you're procrastinating on my essay, or even putting together a friend's lockdown birthday video montage in Premiere Pro. It's nothing like as rich or full as you get on, say, the Macbook Pro or even a Dell Xps. Speech and effects are clear enough, and it gets reasonably loud and noise levels, although it does still depend on the laptop, but there's just not much bass to round things out

 Although of course that would compromise battery life and maybe maybe a more aggressive price. These are very expensive as I say at about 1500 pounds or 1700, so you are definitely paying a premium for this ultra lightweight design. That said, I have seen the 16 listed for as low as 1250 pounds already with a lower spec and this actually looks like even better value as you're still getting all the main gram benefits. But what do you reckon? would you go for the 14? Which I don't have, the 16 or the 17 or none of the above? let me know in the comments below

4.7 pounds is pretty normal for gaming and workstation laptops at 15 - 17 inches.  I think a large M1 laptop at half that weight would be very nice, see the LG Gram 17 for instance.

I agree, I had a max spec 2008 15” MBP and at 5.5 pounds it was heavy. My 4 pound 2016 15” MBP was noticeably lighter and I’m not interested in going back to 5+ pounds so I’m getting a 14” M1 Max model.

They have so many models. Generally weight is due to additional cooling solutions as well. SO anyone looking for lightness could choose the 13" base or the Air. For people who really need more power should be happy with the 14 & 16" models. They are only a tad bit heavier than 13" model... so really not a concern. I mean when I life the lenovo T450 or something or put it in a bag pack - that is Heavy (all in my personal context)

Ultra light for a 17"

 I like the weight and intent of this laptop, but the compromises are unacceptable, especially for the price. Laptop paint also chipped first day of light use.

Not so great

 Thermals are fantastic! This thing never even gets lukewarm!!! But. Probably because of that decision, it also doesn't seem to fully turbo boost even to 4 Ghz let alone the CPU's advertised 4.6 Ghz ever, even w/ all of the performance settings on max and it running off of outlet power.  It doesn't feel slow per se ( unless you compare it to say my desktop ), but plug 2 monitors in and you can definitely feel some latency if you're a power user
