 It's definitely keeping up with me and writes well I don't There's not a lot of line variation, it's just a, you know, regular rounded nib. so it's not like an italic or anything like that that should throw you off.  we are checking out the La Me Mm fountain pen. This comes in a box at all. The higher-end Lommy is the CP one studio come in the accent this is black kind of. I Want to say it feels kind of like a craft paper covered cardboard type thing

LAMY 2000 Fountain Pen First Impression

Lamy 2000 is just as effective. Smooth nib? They both have it. I found out after using both pens that the Visconti is far too heavy for me.

 (I know there is a stainless steel version of the Lamy 2000, but (1) it's much more expensive, and (2) it doesn't have a window to view the ink level. For me, the stainless steel version is not worth buying.)

  Overall, I am extremely happy with the Lamy 2000. I wish Lamy manufactured a color other than black, so I could keep a couple of Lamy 2000 with me at all times, with different ink colors. (I know there is a stainless steel version of the Lamy 2000, but (1) it's much more expensive, and (2) it doesn't have a window to view the ink level. For me, the stainless steel version is not worth buying

Beautiful pen, great functionality and value

 The pen writes very smoothly. All the time, every time.  So, I have nothing but praise for the Lamy 2000.  The vendor was also worthy of praise

 The price was great. And the pen was delivered a full week sooner than I expected. At this price, if you are looking for a fountain pen you can't go wrong. In fact, this is as good, or better than many pens twice or three times the price

I work from home, but right now my Lamy 2000 is the only pen I allow out of the house, not only because it’s a solid writer but also because it’s solidly built, and so I’m not afraid of banging it around. My Pilot Custom 823, on the other hand, is like the One Ring…and they all wantsss My Precious for themselves. But it is mine, I tell you.

I'm sort of a clutz and I would hate to lose a really nice pen like that and most of my writing is not at home so what do people do with their nice pens?

Do you EDC your "expensive" fountain pens?

Given the great reviews I had high expectations but I don't want to keep on twisting my arm to keep on writing with this pen. I am glad it works for other people, but it's not for me. The problem lies with the grip (sometimes called "section"). My first impression was annoying metal protrusions that help secure the cap in place

 Fortunately, because the 149 is a standard classic, you can usually find a good used one for \~50-70% of the MSRP which makes it a much more attractive option (in general, not just compared to a lifetime supply of Jinhao 159's).

 But is the Montblanc worth it compared to the Jinhao? At MSRP you could have \~75+ 159's, enough to last a lifetime. And you'd probably need 75 of them. About half of them wouldn't write that well and, after a time, the paint would flake or the threads would become loose. It's hard to say that the Montblanc is 75 times better though

 I don't think you can really go wrong with any of these pens, but I certainly think some of these pens are better bang for your buck. As an owner of a 149, I would say that Pelikan feels like its more affordable and reasonable cousin. As someone else mentioned down below, though, there are ofc quite a few other options if you're looking besides the selection you've listed.

I haven't personally used Aurora, but I've heard great things about the company and their pens. The nibs are apparently on the stiffer side, so that would be something to consider. I don't think you can really go wrong with any of these pens, but I certainly think some of these pens are better bang for your buck. As an owner of a 149, I would say that Pelikan feels like its more affordable and reasonable cousin

Montblanc 149 is not really great unless you look at vintage 50s, 80s/90s at $500/600. The newer ones, which I have much experience with, have pretty variable QC and lack some things the old 149s had (celluloid bodies, metal filling tube, more flexible nib). Their nib width variability between sizing is also rather extreme. Also, my 149 came with a scratched piston brand new

 I would make sure to give the whole pen a check, since for me my M800 (which I returned) came with clip scratches, so it's not just the nib.

Slight dilemma.  Would love to acquire a luxury fountain pen, but having some trouble deciding on which brand.  At the moment my list is (in no particular order):

1. Montblanc 149 (no idea what nib to choose either!)
2. Pelikan M800
3. Pelikan M1000
4. Visconti HS lava color
5. Aurora 88

Part of the problem is that I have large hands, and if using a pen un-posted the length (nib tip to barrel end) should ideally be in the range of 125mm to 140mm, so the above list is representative of this.  

Which one to choose though? Price wise the list varies from 390 to 610 Euros.  I would have considered a MB149 2nd hand if the price was right or anyone had ever offered a decent example, but in the absence of that I am forced to go new. 

So, pros and cons to those on the list welcome (would be bought from a dealer that checks nibs, for those hating on Visconti! :) )

Other suggestions welcome.

Choosing first luxury pen

I very much enjoy using the 149. As someone with bigger hands, it's perfect for my writing style. It feels solid but not heavy to hold, and the ink flow is very smooth. I used the 146 for years, but once I got a chance to write with the 149, there was no going back

Lovely pen with a nice heft.  It can be posted or not, depending on your preference (I prefer not posted). Because my method of writing is printing, I chose the EF nib. It is a smooth writer, with just a hint of scratch (which I like)
