Admittedly, some of our testers are not particularly fond of closed-toe models. However, we all agree that the Keen Newport H2 is a worthy competitor in the performance sandal category. It's tuned up to be water-savvy with durable rubber outsoles and a hydrophobic EVA-foam footbed, though we also find the Newport to be grippy and versatile in most dryland activities as well. The molded insole is comfortable and supportive while maintaining a relatively lightweight feel. The Newport's webbing structure is padded with neoprene backing and is very comfortable and quick to dissipate moisture. It also offers adequate protection from stubbed toes on submerged river rocks and the trail as a closed model. 
One drawback of a closed-toe sandal is that it's easier for pebbles and sand to get stuck inside the shoe if you're hiking through a rocky stream bed or at the beach. We found that this is a minor inconvenience for the high-end wet-condition performance of the Newport H2. While it is ideal for watersports and our top choice for a closed-toe sandal, it also keeps up with some of the burlier models in our lineup regarding traction and stability. We give this model a seal of approval for trail use and watersports. This footwear style isn't most folks' first pick for wearing around town, but it certainly gets the job done in the outdoors.

If your ideal summer adventure involves being out on the water all day or hiking through brush and stream crossings, a closed-toe design like KEEN’s Newport H2 makes a lot of sense. In contrast to the open-toe models above, the Newport sports a generous rubber toe cap that covers the front and top of the forefoot to guard against direct hits from rocks and roots. In addition, the polyester webbing upper and quick-dry lining don’t grow heavy when soaked, and the bungee laces make it easy and quick to snug things down with a single pull. Finally, as we’ve come to expect from KEEN, the Newport H2 is comfortable enough to wear all day thanks to its well-cushioned build and good arch support.

What are the downsides? First, the Newport H2 runs notably small, and it’s best to try them on before buying (or purchase from a retailer with a good return policy). Further, despite the use of KEEN’s Anti-Odor technology, we’ve found the Newport tends to hold onto a stink, especially if worn frequently during the hot summer months (they are machine-washable, which helps). Finally, some users have reported premature durability issues with the sole and stitching in particular, although we’ve had pairs last multiple years without issue. In the end, the Newports aren’t for everyone and lack the everyday appeal of many of the open-toe options. But for uses like fly fishing, kayaking, walking along rocky shorelines, or even riding your bike around town (the toe coverage is a big draw), it’s a winning recipe.  My typical day touring is morning to night and upwards of 10 miles a day. I have flat feet and need all the support I can get in a shoe.

If you were to wear only one or two pairs of shoes for all your trips, which pair would it be and why?

 The good thing is is that these these are washable, so it says cold, water, wash separately general cycle and air dry. So I'm able to you know after I wear these a lot and they start to sink it's not to sink, but to stink, I'll, be able to wash them and that's a good thing. The build quality I find to be very nice. I don't write many product reviews, but I thought I'd chip in my two cents to help the next guy. I loved these sandals for their comfort and fit. I wore them on a couple of backpacking trips with 40 lbs on my back tromping through streams along the way, and I never had the slightest hint of a blister on my feet. My review of three stars is four three reasons: First of all, they only lasted about 18 months

 They are cheaply glued together and will start the clock to fall apart the moment you put them on your feet.

 Keen has an 12 month warranty, so don't expect them to outlast that by much (my day-to-day use was more sitting in a cubicle than backpacking through wet terrain). Second, they are heavy. These weigh a multiple of your standard flip-flop sandals and probably more than your tennis shoes. Third, and this is probably more me than the shoe, they tend to get very stinky

Great for comfort, but not durable

I’m now experimenting with Teva Universal Urban sandals that are a bit lighter and pack much flatter. 

 It’s under a kilo and as useful for urban travel as well as wilderness day hiking. I want water bottle pockets, sternum strap and compression straps and it has them all plus a great 3/4 clamshell opening and proportions that will work for carry on everywhere I’ve looked. It may even fit under seats. It will hold a couple medium compression cubes and a small folder with room left over for a toiletries bag and I can stash my sandals in the side pockets if needed

This list is for cold or warm weather, anything barring true extremes, and mostly urban-based travel. I'm still working on a different packing list for hiking-focused trips. 

I say that it's good for up to 4 weeks, mainly because I think that's how long my consumable items would last (medications, laundry detergent, moisturizer, face masks, etc) before I'd have to find local replacements. But otherwise it's good for long-term. I guess I'd want to bring my laptop for anything longer than a month.

I sweat a lot, so anti-odor fabrics are crucial for me. I love merino but the price is insane, never thought I'd have to save up for weeks to buy a t-shirt. Are there cheaper anti-odor shirts in other materials that I should know about? Is the Pata Capilene any good?

(Related note: any recommendations for travel rewards cards? I'm based on the US east coast and I'm mainly interested in travel to Europe and Asia. I'm also a poor dental student in debt up to my ears.)

Rate my packing list (general onebag intl travel for up to about 4 weeks)

 All these features and overall durability do come at a slight cost in size, 10 men's. These guys weigh in at 1 pound per sandal. This weight can take some getting used to, but it is a small price to pay for such an amazing sandal.  These bands are separated from your foot by a nice cushioning layer for added comfort. A good thing to note is that this sandal is machine washable. If the top bands are looking a little muddy, dirty or sweaty, you can throw these in the washing machine. These bands can be pulled in by the bungee cord in the front

There is excellent Ridge support in the middle of the shoe and you may notice the anti-odor footbed here Keene uses clear sport NXT, which breaks down sweat with enzymes. [, Music, ], hey y'all, I Rick's guy here and I want to do a quick review of the Keene sandals. These sandals are super cool because you can see the toes are reinforced. So it's hard to stump your toe. The sides are also reinforced and then the soles - let me show you this on the side here you got the side kind of open and then this little little strap thing right here that opens and closes the shoes

These shoes are light, comfortable, and low-maintenance. They’re perfect for wet, muddy, or hot conditions since they breathe well and dry quickly.

Its design allows it to be tossed in the washing machine with little worry of damage. This should do the trick, but wetsuit soap can also be added if you’ve got some really powerful stink that needs liberating. Keen advises on its website to wash Newports on a gentle cycle then air dry them.

Fit Tip: This style is running a 1/2 small. We suggest ordering a 1/2 size larger than your usual size!

 Plus, my feet sometimes swell after long hikes of six or more miles, so it’s nice to know I can expand and contract these shoes based on where I am in the hike, and how long I expect to go. 

Unlike hiking boots, I don’t envision wearing the KEEN Women's Newport H2 Sandals very often, which makes the $110 price tag a bit hard to swallow. However, if you know you plan to use them frequently—so your price per wear might be lower—they’re worth it for their high-quality build and comfortable, customizable fit. Plus, KEEN has sales throughout the year, so you may be able to find a steal if you wait long enough!

The sandals also kept my feet comfortable, with arch support that felt designed to cradle my foot’s contours. Plus, weighing just 10.5 ounces, I was shocked by how lightweight and bouncy these shoes felt for the entirety of my three-mile hike.

Keen and especially these Newports have become a lesson in poor quality control.  Not only is the stitching poor but the footbed snd straps are not glued properly. Teva’s most sustainably minded sandal to date, the ReFlip takes a bold step forward, reworked with recycled content across the straps, midsole, and outsole. Flipping the iconic travel sandal on its head, we’ve incorporated post-industrial waste that would’ve otherwise ended up in landfills.

Teva, which means "nature" in Hebrew, has always sought to help people connect more intimately with the natural world. Since 2020 they've committed to making all their straps from recycled material. With the Teva Reflip, they decided to go a bit further by incorporating recycled materials into the whole flip flop. The straps are recycled polyester, and the top, mid, and sole are made from a minimum of 70% recycled EVA. All this means that you'll have some peace of mind along with comfort while you trek around in these lightweight, comfortable, and very affordable slips. 
The nylon straps on the Reflip are comfortable whether wet or dry and help hold the flip flops on foot. The footbed is extremely light and buoyant &#40;this is the lightest flip we've tested&#41; and has light molded support. The sole does not absorb water, so no matter how much time you spend with wet feet, they'll still be as light as when you went in. In this way, the Reflip outperformed other lightweight contenders that tended to absorb water and become squishy. The primary drawback of this shoe is that the dry traction leaves a bit to be desired. These were, in fact, some of the least stable on steep, slippery slopes. That said, they got us to all of our favorite swimming spots without any major slips &mdash; the rubber's high surface area performed well on slippery river rocks. I was a little concerned by some of the reviews but am glad I went ahead to buy these, anyway. I’ve worn tevas for many years and since they discontinued the single ribbon style flip flop awhile ago, it’s been a struggle to find one as comfortable. I was wearing the Voya flip which was ok. These are so much better! They are so lightweight, it’s amazing
