This robot was outstanding at picking up nearly every last bit of the sample messes we scattered, partly due to its unique dual counter-rotating rubber brushes. We appreciated that it would periodically dock to recharge and empty its own bin (the dock holds replaceable vacuum cleaner bags) before returning to cleaning. It quickly mapped multiple rooms accurately, making it easy to set cleaning schedules and assign it to specific rooms on demand. Its app wasn’t always the most user-friendly, with some tasks taking multiple steps, but it was adequate. One caveat: While the manufacturer guarantees that this robot avoids pet “accidents,” it didn’t do so consistently: Sometimes it was remarkably clever in dodging the larger pieces of soft plastic dog poo we placed on the floor, but it plowed right over small ones. It did avoid electrical cords as promised. We liked that this robot can be set to start cleaning when it detects that you have left the house and stop when you return, using the location on your phone or by linking to other smart home features such as your door locks. The iRobot Roomba j7+ is a solid performer in CR’s tests, and that includes an Excellent score on bare floors. The manufacturer says the vacuum has smart mapping technology that allows it to learn, map, and adapt to the areas to be cleaned. Once the robot is docked, a vacuum in the docking station automatically sucks the contents from the bin into an enclosed disposable bag in the base.

CR’s take: The iRobot Roomba j7+ builds on the same robotic core as the Roomba i3 Evo above and earns similar scores on most of our tests. But the Roomba j7+’s navigation system is much more advanced. For starters, it can learn Smart Maps for multiple levels of your home (instead of just one floor, as with the i3 Evo), so you can use a smartphone app to tell it to clean certain rooms and skip others. But the most significant upgrade is the j7+’s obstacle-avoidance system. It uses a camera on the front of the bot to recognize certain hazards, including socks, clothes, towels, and—drumroll, please—pet waste. Once it spots a hazard, the j7+ adjusts its cleaning path to make sure it doesn’t snarl (or smear) the obstacle. CR has not tested this particular feature. Worth noting: iRobot promises that it’ll replace the vacuum if it fails to avoid pet waste in the first year after purchase. One downside of that front-facing camera: The Roomba j7+ is the only iRobot model that falls short of our top rating for data security.Another option to consider is the lower-priced Roomba i7+, which has the same cleaning system and Smart Map capabilities as the j7+ but doesn’t have the obstacle-avoidance feature. Expected More - Let Down

 I also can not use the function where you look at the photos with my iphone 11 pro max. I was finally able to do the set up using my OLD ipad air 2. I find it unacceptable that the app will not work for one of the main features or to set it up, using my newish Iphone on the latest iOS software. In talking to other users this problem is common

 This model does an great job on hard surfaces but does not really do the greatest job on carpet compared to my older 980 which had a carpet boost setting that most of the other 900 robots lacked. I also liked that I could set my 980 to focus on cleaning and could turn off edge clean. It's probably silly on my part but I like to see the neat lines on my carpet after it cleans and it seems to do the back and forth cleaning with the j7 and then go around the edges so I see these deep marks on the edges and going around any furniture. I liked that I could turn that off with my 980 so I just saw neat rows

 I could always go turn it on once in awhile but honestly that edge feature is more important with hard floors, than it is with carpet.  One other thing I find odd is that the app shows me carpet the robot has detected, yet there are no settings for changing vac power level and it does not act differently on carpet, so why is the thing worried about detecting my carpet?  I ended up having to set it to clean twice once one way and once across what it vacuumed to get it as clean as it got it with my 980 alone. I probably would have been better off going with the s9 for carpet but I did not want to pay that much and upstairs there is not as much dirt so it does and acceptable job. I just think they could have given it a little more power and more settings

 I did try turning it off and was hoping it would shut that light off but the light still is shining even with the feature turned off. It seems like it would waste power having that light on all the time and if I don't use the feature why is the light still on?  Ok so on to the actual vacuuming. Good But Some Glitches

Having two points for the dust to exit creates poor suction and I ALWAYS have to empty the dust bin manually. It always dies out in the middle of the house, and is constantly getting stuck. The app is nice but it will randomly wipe our map away like we have never used it before. The battery dies SO fast that if I want it to clean our entire first floor (We live in a 1,800 sqft home so maybe 1,200 sqft) I have to run it on low suction which I feel like barely makes a difference

What worked for me to help sort out some kinks with the robot cleaning and it’s job success rate was doing a mapping run right after getting the update. Sorted out all the kinks in how well it performed. 

 For now, I say, if you have the funds, and you don't have the time to regularly vacuum, this is worth the price.

Robot vacuums have come a long way since the days I used to babysit my original Roomba (circa 2006), following it around to make sure it didn’t thrash around on a threshold or ignore the miniature lighthouses and trundle unseeingly into a no-go zone. Back then, my biggest issue was coming home to a robot vacuum that had gone about 10 minutes into its cleanup route and been derailed by a shoe, sock, or dress-up wig.

 Floors can’t really be cleaned if they’re still littered with clutter. But if it means the bot won’t get tripped up by that stray cable you didn’t know was sitting under the couch or the pair of shoes your significant other carelessly discarded in its path, then there’s some benefit. 

 iRobot does not release suction power stats but says that the j7 is 10 times stronger than its entry-level Roomba 600, whereas the s9 is 40 times stronger. The j7 is just fine for regular dirt and debris, and even if you have more challenging tasks (copious kitty litter, for example), it’s hard to recommend the $250 upgrade to the s9, as you don’t get the obstacle navigation features. In my testing of the s9, it routinely fell prey to socks and charging cables.

Where things diverge significantly is battery life — the Roomba can go an impressive 1 hour and 45 minutes on one charge, whereas the Jet Bot tops out at an hour on full power. Both will go back to the base, recharge, and resume, but the Jet Bot took almost twice as long to clean our entire downstairs living area as the Roomba because it had to recharge in the middle while the Roomba could do the whole space in one go.

Home robots are getting smarter

 I can't imagine going forward they will keep this design. If you live in a small apartment then you should definitely be aware that you will be disturbing your neighbors or yourself when it self empties. It's louder than my large shop vac.

The good and bad

I ordered this product last week and it arrived a few days later. I ordered the combination that had extra filters, rollers, and brushes since I have 4 kids and 4 animals in my home. I should mention, I have a German Shepherd that is constantly shedding and a long-haired Siamese cat. Between these two animals, I should sweep daily, but I don't have that kind of time, so I splurged on the Roomba

Bought my roomba 614 back in 15' and it stills runs great to this day. Haven't purchased any newer models but those prices do look good.

The end result is that these robots pick up surface level debris on carpet just about as well as most other robot vacuums we tested largely because of their two brush rolls, And despite their low airflow and suction, this design did result in slightly below average performance. In our carpet deep clean test, the 614 and 675 picked up only four grams of debris after three passes over an area of carpet embedded with 30 grams of fine debris in our heart.  I was quite impressed to see how well it target the high traffic zones in-house and clean them instantly with advanced Dirt Direct system. When I used this smart vacuum cleaner in rooms its performance was pretty satisfying as it made all the floors clean even at unreachable corners and around the furniture. Now, the next target was stairs. Before putting it in operational mode on stairs, I made some arrangements to protect it if it falls down because I was expecting that

 But as soon as it started working on stairs, its Cliff Detect sensors got activated instantly and it started working like a human. Within few minutes it brought back the shiny look of stairs in my house. Easy to use: iRobot Roomba works well on carpets as well as hard floors. For the price I paid, I'm not thrilled whatsoever with this robot. I've had a cheaper brand in the past (cost half the price) and it was more efficient. And came with a remote. This one is incredibly loud, doesn't fit under my coffee table, skips rooms completely, gets jammed under my bed and have to chase it throughout the house to turn the loud thing off
