 In prior years you needed separate hardware to create areas for Roomba to stay away from, now this is handled in the app.  Now for the bad.  The features list states it has 10x the suction power of an old Roomba, seems like it's more along the lines of 1/2 the suction power. My original Roomba that was purchased at least 5 years ago did a much better job of picking up debris

 My new baseboards and trim are taking a beating, I have black marks all around the house where Roomba plows into the walls. Fortunately most of our furniture has darker wood, so her assaults aren't as obvious.  Next issue is that they say the newer Roomba's clean in a more orderly manner. Instead of just randomly going everywhere with no visible pattern, they are supposed to do more of a straight line type pattern, and then circle the outside of the room to get the edges

Doesn't clean very well

 I enjoy being home and no longer have those nagging feelings of dread about things I need to be cleaning. I also very much enjoy the kitty cats and Chris and I have raging allergies so I need something to clean up the hair. My feelings so far on the two: Quality of the clean: Roomba and Roborock seem to clean the same. I was very pleased with both

 A few seconds and I'm done. The filter is also washable, so it lasts a long time. The Roomba has the base that sucks the dirt out of the machine and into a disposable bag. 1

 I'm not sure how I feel about it. But having to not have to remember to empty the little bastard is convenient since I have it running 3 days per week. Sounds: Both are god dang vacuums. They sound like vacuums

 I bought our Roborock on sale for $179 last year and have been very pleased with it. My heart was originally set on the more pricey Roomba self-emptying units, but since I am frugal and wanted to see if it would even work here, I went with the lesser expensive bot. We have a house full of old furniture and rooms so I didn't know if a robot would even jive here. I have been VERY pleased with our Roborock

Buy a robot vacuum already!

 So I decided to give this I6 Plus a shot. Now the difference between the I6 Plus, I7 Plus and I8 Plus is really not a lot. The I6 Plus is an Amazon Special edition, the I7 Plus is just a regular standard edition, and the I8 Plus is the one that Costco sells. Now the I7 Plus has a few extra goodies like I think they have an extra vacuum bag and maybe a filter and the Costco version it might have you know, 20 extra battery life, but honestly, the the difference is really negligible

 Um, so if I were you I would just go for the cheapest option. I managed to find this unit uh on Amazon for uh, 549 dollars. So it was on, uh, sale. I have a link in the description below in case you want to take a look at what the price is

 Perfect.  Ok so suction certainly is not like my Oreck upright vacuum but it does a pretty good job, especially on my hard-wood floors. The carpeted bedrooms don't fend quite as well but it still does a decent job.  Occasionally it gets confused and spins in circles for a couple seconds but eventually it figures out where it is and continues on it's way

 I can sequentially select which rooms/areas to do next and not give it another worry. Occasionally it comes back into the living room area, re-docks, empties the dust-bin (definitely sounds like a jet engine) and then it heads back to exactly where it left off in another part of the house. Perfect.  Ok so suction certainly is not like my Oreck upright vacuum but it does a pretty good job, especially on my hard-wood floors

 As for noise level, I do not find it excessive. I can work at my desk while it is vacuuming around me and it is acceptable. Wouldn't want it going all day but it's not too bad.  It has never lost its way back to the charging station

 I was expecting a little bit better from Roomba who's bread and butter is the robot vacuum. There are a few other brands that have vacuums that are so much quieter and after hearing those, I regret choosing this one almost entirely based on that.  The battery: This stupid thing runs out of battery in 30-45 minutes, has to recharge for an hour, comes back out for a bit, and then recharges.

The iRobot Roomba j7+ is a solid performer in CR’s tests, and that includes an Excellent score on bare floors. The manufacturer says the vacuum has smart mapping technology that allows it to learn, map, and adapt to the areas to be cleaned. Once the robot is docked, a vacuum in the docking station automatically sucks the contents from the bin into an enclosed disposable bag in the base.

CR’s take: The iRobot Roomba j7+ builds on the same robotic core as the Roomba i3 Evo above and earns similar scores on most of our tests. But the Roomba j7+’s navigation system is much more advanced. For starters, it can learn Smart Maps for multiple levels of your home (instead of just one floor, as with the i3 Evo), so you can use a smartphone app to tell it to clean certain rooms and skip others. But the most significant upgrade is the j7+’s obstacle-avoidance system. It uses a camera on the front of the bot to recognize certain hazards, including socks, clothes, towels, and—drumroll, please—pet waste. Once it spots a hazard, the j7+ adjusts its cleaning path to make sure it doesn’t snarl (or smear) the obstacle. CR has not tested this particular feature. Worth noting: iRobot promises that it’ll replace the vacuum if it fails to avoid pet waste in the first year after purchase. Expected More - Let Down

 I also can not use the function where you look at the photos with my iphone 11 pro max. I was finally able to do the set up using my OLD ipad air 2. I find it unacceptable that the app will not work for one of the main features or to set it up, using my newish Iphone on the latest iOS software. In talking to other users this problem is common

 This model does an great job on hard surfaces but does not really do the greatest job on carpet compared to my older 980 which had a carpet boost setting that most of the other 900 robots lacked. I also liked that I could set my 980 to focus on cleaning and could turn off edge clean. It's probably silly on my part but I like to see the neat lines on my carpet after it cleans and it seems to do the back and forth cleaning with the j7 and then go around the edges so I see these deep marks on the edges and going around any furniture. I liked that I could turn that off with my 980 so I just saw neat rows

 I could always go turn it on once in awhile but honestly that edge feature is more important with hard floors, than it is with carpet.  One other thing I find odd is that the app shows me carpet the robot has detected, yet there are no settings for changing vac power level and it does not act differently on carpet, so why is the thing worried about detecting my carpet?  I ended up having to set it to clean twice once one way and once across what it vacuumed to get it as clean as it got it with my 980 alone. I probably would have been better off going with the s9 for carpet but I did not want to pay that much and upstairs there is not as much dirt so it does and acceptable job. I just think they could have given it a little more power and more settings

 I did try turning it off and was hoping it would shut that light off but the light still is shining even with the feature turned off. Good But Some Glitches

Having two points for the dust to exit creates poor suction and I ALWAYS have to empty the dust bin manually. It always dies out in the middle of the house, and is constantly getting stuck. The app is nice but it will randomly wipe our map away like we have never used it before. The battery dies SO fast that if I want it to clean our entire first floor (We live in a 1,800 sqft home so maybe 1,200 sqft) I have to run it on low suction which I feel like barely makes a difference

What worked for me to help sort out some kinks with the robot cleaning and it’s job success rate was doing a mapping run right after getting the update. Sorted out all the kinks in how well it performed. 

 For now, I say, if you have the funds, and you don't have the time to regularly vacuum, this is worth the price.

Robot vacuums have come a long way since the days I used to babysit my original Roomba (circa 2006), following it around to make sure it didn’t thrash around on a threshold or ignore the miniature lighthouses and trundle unseeingly into a no-go zone. Back then, my biggest issue was coming home to a robot vacuum that had gone about 10 minutes into its cleanup route and been derailed by a shoe, sock, or dress-up wig.

 Floors can’t really be cleaned if they’re still littered with clutter. But if it means the bot won’t get tripped up by that stray cable you didn’t know was sitting under the couch or the pair of shoes your significant other carelessly discarded in its path, then there’s some benefit. 

 iRobot does not release suction power stats but says that the j7 is 10 times stronger than its entry-level Roomba 600, whereas the s9 is 40 times stronger. The j7 is just fine for regular dirt and debris, and even if you have more challenging tasks (copious kitty litter, for example), it’s hard to recommend the $250 upgrade to the s9, as you don’t get the obstacle navigation features. In my testing of the s9, it routinely fell prey to socks and charging cables.

Where things diverge significantly is battery life — the Roomba can go an impressive 1 hour and 45 minutes on one charge, whereas the Jet Bot tops out at an hour on full power. Both will go back to the base, recharge, and resume, but the Jet Bot took almost twice as long to clean our entire downstairs living area as the Roomba because it had to recharge in the middle while the Roomba could do the whole space in one go.

Home robots are getting smarter

 I can't imagine going forward they will keep this design. If you live in a small apartment then you should definitely be aware that you will be disturbing your neighbors or yourself when it self empties. It's louder than my large shop vac.
