Also Amazon just delivered the Inov-8 Terraultra G270 and that will be going back since, again, way too narrow. My normal shoes size is 9 4E, so the size 10 LP5 was a bit too long for me.

There seemed to be considerable interest in the lead up to the Lone Peak 5 release, so now that they're available to purchase I thought I'd share my thoughts now that I have my hands, er feet, on a pair.

tl;dr: The "normal" width is now noticiably more narrow than before, and the achilles heel rubbing is similar to the 4.5 model as opposed to the earlier models.

I ordered the 8.5 size from REI, who didn't offer the new "wide" size below a size 9. For comparison, I've used and loved Lone Peak 3.0s, 3.5s, and 4.0s, and hiked a few days in the 4.5s before getting debilitating achilles tendon rubbing problems that went away when I switch back to the earlier models.

The new 5.0s seem like a better overall construction -- the sewn toe of the sole looks like it should be sufficient to avoid the inevitable toe peeling of the earlier models, and compared to the 4.0s you can really see the accumulation of small refinements.

Unfortunately, the heel collar of the shoe seems almost completely identical to the 4.5 to my tendons.  While the earlier models had thicker padding and less rigidity in the heel collar, the 4.5s and 5.0s angle in toward your achilles, and are more rigid with less thick padding, causing the rigid part of the heel collar press against my achilles even when I'm not walking.

Width-wise, the 5.0 is slightly narrower -- I measured about 4 inches width compared to about 4.4 inches for the Lone Peak 4.0 and 3.0s in the same size 8.5. It's noticeable, though not terrible when wearing them -- more like wearing a "normal" shoe than the standard glorious toe-spread you'd expect from a pair of Altras.

I'd expect the narrower width to be an issue when hiking for extended periods of time, but I don't think I'm going to find out. Between the heel colar and the width, I'm returning the Lone Peak 5s and continuing my ever elusive search for the perfect wide toeboxed trail runners. I just hope I find them before I run through my stockpile of not-quite-worn-out Lone Peaks.

Altra Lone Peak 5 initial impression

I have the chance to get a good deal on a pair of black Inov-8 Terraultra G 270 (now re-branded as Trailfly) and like the fit. If you have suggestions for other shoes, I would be happy to hear about them!. The impossible task of finding a shoe for everything.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it is the mantra Salomon lives by regarding the legendary Speedcross line. The newest iteration, the Salomon Speedcross 6, includes minor design tweaks that improve upon the already great platform without reinventing the wheel. Long known for its aggressive outsole and unrivaled traction, designers modified the rubber compound to improve performance in muddy conditions. They fine-tuned the sagittate lug pattern for an even better grip on mud, rock, and everything in between. This new version is slightly lighter than the previous model, updating the upper to include more mesh for improved breathability. But don't worry, the Speedcross 6 still offers a glove-like fit straight out of the box. We're fast approaching a decade of running in these shoes, and our heart only grows fonder for this beloved trail runner.
Despite our gushing, we still have a few criticisms of this specialty shoe. Our biggest carry-over complaint between the previous version and the Speedcross 6 is the overly-assertive and outdated drop design. With a thick heel counter and 10mm heel-to-toe drop, this shoe is particularly unstable when running downhill. Although the breathability has improved by tweaking the type of mesh over the instep and forefoot, the Speedcross is better deployed during the cold weather months or high-altitude runs through the mountains. On the flip side, with other, less supportive, and less comfortable shoes pushing into its weight class, we no longer complain about the heft of the Speedcross 6.   These shoes are amazing. love the laces and love the feel.  However, like knobby tires on a bike or car, these wear super fast on asphalt. As much as I like them, I feel reluctant to wear them on the street because they wear down so quickly

Salomon Speedcross 6 Review - The Best Trail Running Shoe?

 Waterproofing looks good. The footbed is a bit narrower than I like for stability, but frankly if I were just to need a shoe for trail running on rugged trails, I'd run these for sure. Pretty good protection for toe/heel.

These type shoes are made to fit tight. Not length but around your foot. You need to tighten them down and they “lock” your foot in nicely and after a couple weeks they conformed to my foot. They feel very comfortable after what I assume was the break-in period

... probably too many! The tightness I mentioned really comes in handy running over uneven ground like rocks, mud, up and down steep inclines

 If they last like I expect them too I think the price although high is worth it. I will be doing many runs so if anything fails or my review changes for the worse I will update immediately. Thanks for reading and I hope it helps someone who is on the fence about these.

Trail runners best friend

The shoes are excellent in all but one respect: the ridged soles slip on wet rocks. Great fit, cushioning, construction, quick tie laces. All good EXCEPT: if you need to walk on rocks that are even a little wet or mossy, watch out. You will land in the drink
