While the comfort and support of maximally cushioned shoes are great, all of that padding can have some serious consequences for stability and agility &mdash; two key aspects for mountain runners in particular. HOKA must have been listening to complaints, and their answer is the HOKA Torrent 2 &mdash; a stripped-down version of their traditional ultra-running platform that is one of those magical trail shoes. Designers cut the stack height to a more reasonable 23mm in the heel but maintained all of the comfort and support HOKA is known and loved for. The result is a highly responsive, surprisingly agile, yet supremely cushioned trail runner that weighs as much as a minimalist, zero-drop shoe.
There are only a few downsides to this shoe, and they all generally relate to those issues inherent with other maximally cushioned shoes. While the decrease in stack height improves stability, the dense foam in the midsole cuts out a substantial amount of ground sensitivity &mdash; a positive for long-distance runners but more of an issue for technical alpine trails. The relatively wide last and shorter heel pocket also makes for a less-than-stable experience when sidehilling or running in off-camber terrain, which again affects the performance of this shoe only in certain circumstances. Our biggest fear is that the durability of the outsole rubber, in particular, may not hold up to as many regular long-distance outings as other ultra-running options on the market. But considering the price point of this top-performing shoe, it may be more than worth lacing up in the Torrent 2 at the starting line of your next ultra-marathon.

Settled with the Hoka Torrent 2, cushion still feels great but more stable (lower stack) than the ATRs and relatively lightweight. They're not the most rugged but work well for hard packed trails with some trees and rocks that are around here. I would have liked to try to Nike trail shoes or the New Balance Hierro but nowhere he has them.

Hi all I’m looking for a pair of trail shoes for hard/dry trails. I live around lots of fields and farmland and as the weather is drying up, the mud has too and I’m feeling pains in my legs which I think may be to do with running in soft, road shoes on harder, jagged trails. 

Does anyone have any recommendations for trail shoes? I’d like them to be comfy but also supportive and I’m not interested about going fast.

Trail shoes

 It is still pretty lightweight. 9.1 ounces isn't the lightest shoe, but for a trail shoe that does make it pretty light. Uh, and I do feel like there is like a nimbleness to it that I really enjoy

 I know I've been hearing from a lot of you guys who have been enjoying this shoe as well and I think that you guys are enjoying it, but there might be some of you who either have questions or completely disagree and I'd love to hear from you guys too down in the comments, but down below, let's keep the conversation going down there.  I really like how soft it is and the rubber outsole is. You know it's a rubber outsole so it's definitely going to hold up really well. I'm not seeing any like uneven wear or anything like that in the shoe. Uh, so really impressed with the way that these lugs are able to hold up over time

 I feel like I can get up through them really easily. In terms of how it's holding up, I feel like the pro fly midsole is still feels pretty cushy. I really like how soft it is and the rubber outsole is. You know it's a rubber outsole so it's definitely going to hold up really well

Hoka Torrent 2 - After 100 Miles

 Seems though that Sense Ride 4 and the Ultra Glide might be a bit more cushioned. VJ Ultra is also getting good reviews, but they are quite expensive.

For my last long race, 50 miler, I trained and raced in entirely 1 shoe: NB GOBI V3. - that I have loved but found to not have enough cushion.

I have recently bought Sacony Peregrine 10 ST and found them to heavy and not quite as cushioned as I would have hopped.

I've been looking at Altra Lone Peak's or Timps but don't want to swap to a zero drop mid tranning. Hoka One One has soon good cushioned shoes as well but I'm not trying to spend more than  $120 on a shoe.

I'm super picky about shoes but any suggestion would be appreciated!

The Long run shoe

Torrent 2, (only used these on trails and they’re fine. Low profile for Hokas though the speedgoats offer more cushion). The only shoes I’ve had from Hoka that didn’t fit were the Rocket Carbon - far too narrow all the way through despite being a size 9. They also do a wide fit in a few models if you’re really broad footed but I would say they are fine in regular

Hoka sizing

 They take time getting used to, but overall the grip is 100% better. I really like their proprietary rubber outsole.

The Salomon Speedcross 5 has long been known for its insanely aggressive outsole, a feature that forced almost every competing shoe brand to imitate it. Salomon has improved this by making the rubber on the sole even stickier so that it acts like glue to rock &mdash; even wet rock. They also significantly widened the forefoot of this notoriously narrow shoe by a significant margin, which increased both comfort and wearability for those with wider feet. This change also improved from past versions by adding a larger landing platform. In addition to making the arrow-shaped lugs larger and farther apart for easier mud shedding and increasing the durability of the already beefy upper, these changes make this the best version of the Speedcross in at least the last six years. The shoe still fits like a glove, with the foot securely locked in place with Salomon's quick lace system; it feels supremely comfortable right out of the box. We once again love to run in this shoe, but it still has some features that seem a bit outdated. It's not only unstable, especially when running downhill, but a bit of a relic of a bygone era in shoe design. These days it's also pretty heavy on the spectrum of ever-lighter trail shoes. It also retains its reputation for running a bit warm and short on breathability, which means these shoes are better used for higher altitude mountain runs where the air is cool. While many other companies have put serious effort into improving the traction on their shoes, our side-by-side testing shows that the Speedcross 5 simply grips the best. If you enjoy running off-trail or in the mountains where the ground is often wet, snowy, muddy, rocky, and steep, this is an ideal choice, with traction unrivaled by any other shoe.

Switchback Travel

The Speedgoat above is a nicely cushioned go-to for well-established trail networks, but it suffers on particularly soft terrain like mud and snow. In these conditions, you’ll want a full rubber outsole (the Speedgoat uses a combination of rubber and foam) with relatively long and widely spaced lugs that bite into the ground with each step. Salomon’s trail-eating Speedcross 5 sets the standard for this category, combining massive 6-millimeter arrow-shaped lugs and a supportive and snug-fitting upper for impressive control at speed. Tack on a thick midsole, single-pull lace system, and sturdy yet still reasonably light chassis, and you get one of the most capable trail designs, whether your run takes you over snow, sand, or wet leaves and thick mud.

But while the Speedcross is hard to beat on soft terrain, it’s not a particularly versatile shoe.  I would like to know how they've held up for you in the comments below anyways moving on to the midsole. It is their energy cell branded midsole, and it's designed to be very responsive and it's very light as well, and even when you're out running you do kind of notice the rebound on it and the midsole does go kind of up in our cups around the heel. Just to give some extra support and protection, but in combination with the ortholite insole, it really does add a whole other degree of comfort to this shoe and i have a lot of comfortable shoes. But i have to say this is probably one of my most comfortable shoes

So again, i would just go true to size and if you got wide feet they got you covered, salomon does have their branded scentsy fit support upper and that's all the zigzag lines you see here in combination with the lacing system. It does provide really good support for your foot and i'm not sure what exact material it's made out of visually

Virtually no braking period whatsoever and also the lacing system does a really good job of supporting your foot even uh, when you haven't really broken them in or had them that long. So i know that, lastly, the breathability - it's really nice, i don't notice my feet getting hot at all and a reason why i didn't go with the gore-tex ones is just where i live

Salomon Speedcross 5 | Review & Styling

 Has these really big lugs that start at the end of the toe and work their way all the way to the heel and the pattern of these lugs is in such a way that it's going to offer traction whether you're going up or if you need braking Traction going down a hill and the rubber on this outsole is what solomon calls their contagrip again, my first time using it, but i can attest to how grippy this outsole is. I had no slipping issues whatsoever. I went over some wet rocks, some wet roots, plenty of mud, so job well done on the outsole. Now i'll talk about how it fits and how it feels so

 As far as price of the shoe, when i first had it sent to me, i had no idea what the price was and i grabbed the shoe and i looked at how heavy duty it is and how aggressive the outsole is, and i thought that the shoe Must be at least 200, so i was really shocked when i looked up and i found that the price was 170, canadian or 140 us, i think for a shoe that fits so nice and performs so well in poor conditions. That'S a really decent price and, if you've ran in solomon's or view of experience of speed, cross 5 comment down below and let me know what your thoughts are and if you want to see another review on a trail shoe, i did the cloud ultra. The speed cross 5 for myself fits true to size, i'm usually a men's eight and a half in most other brands, and the speed cross 5 was no exception. I will say, though, that the midfoot in the shoe is quite narrow

 All right. It was way more comfortable for me to hike in light-weight kind of like running, focused juice compared to heavy rigid boots. Now part of that is probably largely because of my environment here in Southern California, it's a different terrain than a lot of other places. So if you live somewhere else, this may not apply to you as much, but for me I find that I prefer to be agile and be weighed down, even by sacrificing some of that rigidity

 You can tuck all of the lace into and then you're good to go. These I was worried before I got these that these cinches wouldn't stay tight, that the ratchet the latch thing would kind of come undone on its own. I have had zero, loosening and, like I said, I've got miles in these. It'S not like I've done one test, hike and - and that's been, that these have been through the wringer and yeah all of the seams and seals are holding really well
