For Unbound type gravel, I prefer either the Pathfinder pro 38 mm or Panaracer GravelKing SS+. The SS+ tires are super fast regardless of surface type and have plenty of grip for everything except sand. I have done training on Specialized Sawtooth and Specialized Roubaix 32 mm tires on this type of terrain and these tires are less than idea.

I’ve been racing cyclocross for a bit and typically run 33mm for racing.  Last spring (off season), I ran 45mm tires for a bit because it seemed to be the trend in the gravel community.

The 45’s felt slow, the bike wasn’t as nimble around tight corners, and it was harder to lean the bike to keep speed around other corners.  Not to mention the toe overlap was brutal. 

A friend was then selling some 650b wheels, I had never run 650b and decided to give them a try to cure the toe overlap. I bought WTB Sendero 47mm tires and couldn’t love them. The smaller diameter lowered my bottom bracket height and hopping logs, curbs, and rocks would cut it too close to scraping the bottom of my frame.  A couple times, my crank brushed the log I was hopping (luckily it didn’t bend and scrape my frame).

Needless to say, I ended up going back to my 33mm CX tires. I’m riding pretty much all terrain with the 33’s at this point. Everything from road rides with groups of friends to gravel/fire roads in rest days, and single track/mountain bike trails with my mountain bike friends.  33’s have also been fine for mud and sand in my CX races and skills training.

With this said, the trend in gravel riding seems to be wider and wider. So many posts here have 47mm and 50mm tires, which makes me feel like I have to be wrong about this. What am I missing here?

The Vittoria Mazza is an excellent, aggressive tire that rivals the performance of the most popular models on the market. Vittoria may not have the same level of brand recognition as some other manufacturers, but we feel that it is liable to change if they keep making amazing tires like this. We loved the Mazza as a front tire where it excels in the corners with a stout row of well-supported side knobs that grip well in a huge range of conditions. The transition from the center tread to the side knobs is smooth, and once on edge, it bites and holds with confidence-inspiring and predictable manners. We'd highly recommend it as a front tire for aggressive trail riders who are looking to try something different.

If you're looking at those two combos I'd also recommend Vittoria Mazza/Agarro or if you want a little more grip in the rear you could swap the Agarro for a Martello. Ran the DHF/DHR2 combo last year and these so far have outperformed them everywhere. Less rolling resistance, better grip and protection, plus they might be easier to get since the Minions are so popular.

I am looking for a new set of tires but struggle to decide between these two combos. I ride mostly aggresive trail riding in rocky and muddy enviroments. 

Which one will be the best for me?

DHF/DHR vs Magic Mary/Hans Dampf

6 Vittoria Mazza Graphine 2.0 tires in the rear on all my bikes, and on the front on some of my bikes with Wild Enduro Gum x still on the front of one or two bikes. Going to try the 2.4 on the rear for the winter to try and dig in a little deeper through the leaves over mud

Best year-round trail/enduro tire ever!

In the past I've always bought the Maxxis Minion DHR tire for my enduro mtb. I went looking for a new tire to try and decided I'd give these Mazza's a go. I ride in Colorado where the singletrack is mostly loose decomposed granite over hard packed dirt/rock so tires normally wear out quick! I've only got a couple rides on these tires but I'm very pleased with their grip so hopefully the last more than 6 months.
